  1. Thanks for the comment. My strings are pretty high at the moment but I cannot get the action lowered until I stop faffing about and decide whether to go for a gut-like set and a high action, or spiros and a lower action. I have ordered a set of tungsten jazzicatos to play about with while I make up my mind. Luckily I live not far from a luthier who can do the upgrade work needed for this instrument. Unluckily, as my location is Scotland, in order to get the bass back home once it has been set up, I will have to drag it up a bloody great hill! Bass buggy is now top of my purchase list.
  2. Must admit that the Romberg bevel threw me at first. I was going to complain to G4M that my fingerboard was defective, until I noticed a description of it on a luthier's page. Oops! I am going to go for gut or similar strings, but am looking for a set that will handle pizz and arco equally well. Great advice from this forum folks. Thanks!
  3. Thanks for the comments guys. Although I have no experience of the feel of a well set up instrument, nothing feels wrong at the moment, and the bass is quite playable, so I am going to wait a bit for the set up. I am not sure of the type of strings I want to put on the instrument yet, so it would make sense to delay the set up until I have stopped faffing about and reached a decision. The fingerboard has a bevel for gut strings, so I am increasingly thinking of putting gut strings on. Any suggestions of brands - good or bad?
  4. My delux gear4music bass turned up yesterday and I am wondering what I need to do to upgrade it. Straight out of the box it seems quite playable, with no obvious faults. I suspect however, that the action can be improved, but I am planning on leaving things to settle down for a month or so before sending it away for a set-up. I am curious as what other G4M customers have done to modify this instrument? Does anyone have any suggestions regarding strings - I intend to use the bass at home only, and for learning how to play walking bass lines? The bass has a solid spruce top. Should I expect the instrument tone to change over time, due to the bass opening up? Cheers
  5. The bass was delivered today. Phewww!
  6. Thanks for the comment. At the end of the day, all I can do is wait for the bass to be delivered, but the high number of complaints about this company is causing me to worry a bit.
  7. Has anybody any experience of shipping a double bass using the carrier DX? I bought one from Gear4Music last week with an expected delivery date of last Thursday. When I contacted DX support on Friday to find out where the bass was I was told that the delivery had been handed over to a subcontractor, and that I should wait for them to contact me regarding delivery. I get the feeling that customer support were just fobbing me off with an excuse to get rid of me. Should I be concerned that although the tracking information provided by Gear4Music shows that the bass was collected last Tuesday, DX support claims that they did not receive it until last Thursday? I am not happy at the thought of the bass sitting in a warehouse somewhere for a week or so. can anyone comment on the quality of service that DX provides?
  8. T-Bone Walker. He wrote more of Chuck Berry's classic phrases than Chuck himself, and helped get the ball rolling. He influenced a lot more people than Slash and his pals.
  9. Naptha, or cigarette lighter petrol as it is also known. I wouldn't trust WD-40.
  10. I too was disappointed by Steve Earle. I can live with the political stuff, especially in an election year, but he just seemed to be going through the motions. It didn't help that it was a seated venue. When I saw Imelda May at the same venue a year later they removed the seats, and the concert was a belter. Many years ago I saw Gallacher and Lyle reduce everybody to slumber. People rushed for the exit as soon as the gig ended. Venue lights were switched on but the band decided to come back on for an encore. Unfortunately for the band, their re-appearence did nothing to halt the exodus. They probably ended the gig playing to an audience of two, including the caretaker's cat.
  11. The Beatles first album was pretty underwhelming.
  12. Fleetwood Mac again. What's with the Spanish bit at the end of Oh Well?
  13. Thanks for the comments guys. Looks like I need to get practicing.
  14. Ta for the comments Silvia. I have been googling and it seems that the problems are probably due more to my bad playing than the bass.
  15. The bridge has a curve, but not much of one.
  16. Is anybody using a bow with a Stagg EUB? I am struggling with a bow, but I'm not sure if it is because the bass is unsuitable for bowing or if it is just that I'm crap at it.
  17. Thanks for the comments guys. I cannot get used to playing without the upper bout at all, but even with it fitted, I'm still struggling a bit. I seem to be using the fretting hand to support the bass way more than I should have to. I really need a couple of lessons to sort things out, but they are hard to get in these troubled times.
  18. I bought a Stagg EUB a couple of weeks ago and love it but I am not sure of the best way to hold it when playing. Is it better to hold it close to the body, or to use those metal thingies to keep it away from my body? Advantages of either position? At the moment both seem equally awkward.
  19. Imelda May ticks all the boxes for me.

    STRAY - UK Tour

Is it too late to say that when Stray supported the Groundhogs at the Caird Hall, Dundee, during the early 1970s they blew the headliners off the stage?
  21. Does anyone have any experience of this book written by Mathew Rybicki? I'm currently using the Friedland bass method also published by Hal Leonard, plus the Friedland walking bass book, but am wondering if I am missing anything by not having this book?
  22. Hi, Could anyone suggest a book that has contains exercises to build good technique? I'm pretty new to the bass and am trying to avoid picking up bad habits that become difficult to fix over time. Cheers
  23. Hi everyone from a new bassist -I bought my first one a couple of months ago- living in North eastern Scotland. I have been playing guitar since the year dot, so the bass is not a totally new instrument to me. Cheers.
