Any opinions on the rumble 40?

I’ve got one. I only use it for home practise and for that it’s a great little amp and loud.

It may be ok for a quiet band practise but anything louder than that it would struggle. 40w and a single 10 will only get so loud.

  2. Oh dear. I bought my first proper bass there, a Gibson Ripper, back when it was Telecomms.

From a bass point of view they never seemed to have much that I was interested in. The other 2 shops that I could get to easily, Andertons and  GAK always seemed to pack much more into a smaller space.

I drop in there occasionally just to see what’s in but always leave feeling totally underwhelmed.

    Overrated

    - All Stingray basses pre 2018 - weak G syndrome, poorly designed and incorrect pickup alignment

Did they change the voicing in 2018?

I’ve always liked Stingrays, except for that puny sounding G string

  4. I bought this new in 2020 but the band I was practicing with went kaput in the lockdown, so it's never been out of the house and is A1 condition.

Due to personal circumstances I'm just not able to play in a band at the moment so I'm selling it rather than let it sit gathering dust.

I'm near Portsmouth and I don't really want to post it but I can deliver it within 100 miles or possibly meet halfway.

I'm a bit out of touch with the price of stuff so if the asking price is a bit optimistic then I'm happy to be corrected.

  5. Yes, this one. It’s a Classic 60s P. The only other bass I’d consider replacing it with would be a Pino, but at 4ish grand that’s not going to happen.9259083F-D65D-4D5E-8B46-748676CC493F.thumb.jpeg.ce823b27e3a80f616384e2dba49bd86b.jpeg

I do yearn for a Jazz occasionally but I’ve owned multiple basses in the past and I usually sell them and just end up with one Precision.

I find a sound I like, usually a fat, round vintagey sort of sound through my one amp (Quilter) and one cab ( BF) and that’s what I stick with. It works in pretty much every band I’ve ever been in and bandmates all like it so I’ve never had a reason to change. It’s the sound of bass that’s in my head.

At the moment I don’t have the time to be in a band but if that changes I may invest in a spare amp but I just don’t like owning superfluous stuff.

How about another thread for people who only own one amp and one cab (Me)😉

  6. One guy I think doesn’t get nearly the recognition he deserves is Leon Wilkeson of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Sadly departed at the tender age of 49 due to, ahem…. Chronic liver and lung disease.

Heavily influenced by Paul McCartney and it really comes through in his playing. His sound often quite high in the mix on a lot of their material, surprisingly for a band primarily known for their guitar players.

I wish I could say he is one of my influences but that would imply that my playing is on the same planet.

  7. If you’re set on one of those three you’ve listed then I’d avoid the 25. I’ve got the 40 and had the 25.

The 25 is ok for making a honky basslike noise for home practise but that’s about it. It’s only got an 8” driver and very limited tone controls.

The 40 sounds like a proper bass amp, 10” driver, loads of different tones and window rattling volume. It’s a totally different animal and I love mine. It is large for a practise amp though.

Having said that, this is a bass forum so the advice is always going to be, get the the biggest one.

I'd say give it a full setup, setting neck relief, string height and testing for high frets. Odds are you will need a shim or will have very high or worse very low saddle height screws poking yer hand.

You can make or improvise all the tools you need to check except the hex keys. An old credit card can easily make a fret rocker and folded paper, thin guitar picks, and coins (you can easily find their thicknesses online) can stand in for feeler gauges.

I've probably got all the tools I need around somewhere. At the moment I've got a bit of rattle when fretting higher up the neck. Could this be caused by uneven frets. Hw do I check this?

Yes I do indeed have very low saddle height. The E is sitting right on the bridge plate.

  9. I’ve taken the neck off and given it a good blow out. It was a bit dusty and grimy. I’ve put a piece of matchbox cardboard at the front end of the pocket.

That seems to have sorted the problem. It’s far better now. Probably as good as an amateur like me will get it.

I’ll still get it set up properly when we’re let out of prison. The setup is basically what it came with so could do with improvement.

Thanks very much for your help.

You probably need a shim in the neck pocket, but remove the neck and first see if there is one already! If there is at the bottom end, nearest the pick-ups, take it out. If not then fit one at the top, furthest away from the pick-ups. Try something about 10/12 thousandths of an inch to start with, like a piece of a business card.

    HTH,

    John

I’ve heard of shimming but haven’t given it much thought before. So a shim in the front of the neck pocket has the effect of lowering the body end of the neck relative to the headstock end?

I’ll give that a go. Thanks

  11. I’ve got a 60s reissue Precision. I’m trying to get the action down a bit as it hasn’t been touched since it came out of the shop.

It had quite a pronounced bow in the neck so I’ve tightened the truss rod by a quarter of a turn which has straightened it a bit, but I’m getting a lot of fret rattle on the higher frets.

Looking down the neck, it appears to be higher at the body end. Is there anything I can do to flatten it out or does it need some attention from a professional?

  12. Thanks for the suggestions. Perusing the pages of various well known retailers there seems to be a plethora of little mixers and cheap headphone amps around, although I haven't had good results using those sorts of things in the past.

The Ashdown and PJB both seem to get good reviews so I'll probably go for one or the other. Leaning towards the Ashdown at the moment due to the extra EQ and being a nominally British company.

  13. I didn't see the link so I don't know what the song was, but I'm curious what the OP has against cover bands. Does playing original music automatically make you not crap?

I've seen some pretty dire bands doing both, and I've been in a few myself. One thing they did all have in common was they were improving. With age comes maturity ( hopefully ) and it's been a long time since I've felt the need to sneer at other people for having a go.
