Thank heavens Beedster's Mesa combo sold - I was dangerously close to nipping over to Whitstable... and I SO VERY don't need it. What a stunning lump of glorious sound. Boy, that was close😂
-
So: Ampeg Portaflex cabs... seems the cab top unclips to expose the inside. Why?
(I'm considering a 210 so just wondering).

A shout out to my grandson Oliver @Dasbassman who has just signed up here and may be one of the youngest at 13. He's becoming a fine player and also plays guitar and keys (& good vocals). I've pretty much given up gigging now so it's over to Ollie to carry the flag. He's currently playing a cheapo P style 30" Ebay bass through a Peavey combo I found cheap. He's saving for a decent 34", maybe a MIM P or similar. He also plays a US Strat (I helped find that😂) through a Marshall valvestate. I'm going to nag him to get posting now!

EB Cobalt flats £59.99 + post from Strings Direct; £42 free Prime shipping next day from Amazon. Just saying.

Anyone happen to know who played bass on 'Ain't no stoppin' us now': McFadden & Whitehead ('79). Had a google around but no luck so far. A bit tasty!

Quoting Ped: " And if you don't pay we have detector vans that will replace all your basses with Rickenbackers."
Well, I did some sums and I think I'd come out ahead. I'd just flog* the lot and enjoy the hunt again... *not here of course, get told off for trying to list a Rickie here.

Hmmm...I had a similar experience a few weeks ago - courier (MyHermes) repeatedly failed to collect a bass. Interparcel appoint an alternative who also failed to collect. They did however get the bass to me bright and early the following day. BS response from Interparcel who didn't accept any responsibility for the poor service.
I'm looking to get something off to Oz in the next few days - hope that goes better.

Urgent help - recommended shipper for a bass in case from UK to France please.
Thanks all and season's greetings👍 -
Lockdown symptoms: really weird haircut, and swapping out my EB Cobalt flats for a set of D'Addario steel rounds. Sound like stilettos through plate glass. This'll keep me amused for another day.
-
@ezbass - Agree about the 40 quid, the D'Addarios were about 22 so not too crazy. I do have LaBella white nylon flats on my Mayones fretless, they are radically different to the EB Cobalts (on my Jazz fretless) but they do have a really excellent voice of their own.

Big shout for DPD👏. Collected a bass Sevenoaks 13.30 yesterday, arrived Stockport today around 12.30. Smooth as really smooth stuff.

Kelvin McKenzie in the doghouse again then. For saying the families of lost loved ones should sue the Chinese Government. Meanwhile a consortium of businesses in Las Vegas commence a class action against the Chinese Government.
And right now on USA Today, this:
As the coronavirus pandemic sweeps the globe, one fact is increasingly clear: The Chinese Communist Party caused this crisis.
At least the dogs are back in the doghouse in Shenzen. But no doubt they'll be back in the fryer once this sh*tstorm blows over. -
Shock admissions - 2 of 'em. Just caught The Motors 'Airport' on radio 2 (that's the 2 admissions).
What an excellent bass track -well thought out, tasteful, drives the song along - in fact it is the song. Bass is really forward in mix and take it away, the track would collapse.
Well, there we go then- Show previous comments 7 more

all cool @SpondonBassed - we're all a bit on edge being locked up. Spotify for me today👍

Just been advised my `National Drivers Offender Retraining Scheme` is postponed for at least 12 weeks. Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse.

Help! - anyone got experience of shipping a bass from UK to France - carriers, likely cost approx, who's good, who to avoid. Any help appreciated.

Thanks all - but special mention to @Chownybass, who probably takes the biscuit on this one.
Hardly dare tell you all, but the buyer's drifted off now. Still, very good to know for next time.

No gig tonight - off to see The Rifles at The Roundhouse.Get to hear @RobertPyne giving one of his pair of Ric 4003s a firm outing. Top night.
-
Wow. I've seen more bands all over the country than I could shake a stick at. The Rifles were the absolute nuts, 5 star review. Sharp, super-tight, massive songs and an audience of near-devotees right there with them all the way. Magic night. If you're Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham go see for yourself. Good as it ever gets. 👍
(Don't bother poshing up - it gets a bit beery).

Visited Dave at 'Valve Amp Repair Service' in Gravesend yesterday - took my Trace Twin Valve to him for sorting (new caps probably). The place is a vintage mine. He works from home and every space and corner has some vintage amp gear in it. Mesa, Vox, Marshall, Ampeg stuff n bits all over the place. He builds his own Blues 30 and Blues 60 valve heads - nicely done for the guitar players.
Happy to do older solid state but avoids Class Ds as he reckons they are not designed to be serviced in the old way. This guy is a find, and really looking forward to getting the Trace back. -
Pickin' time. From the start I'm a fingers / pick player and I've needed both very many times. So, just preppin a covers dep job (may become more permanent) and all going fine, come to Chelsea Dagger. You can tell that guy has strong punk roots - speed and big aggression. For all the anti-pick guys, I offer you Chelsea Dagger

No Bass day.
Got everything now. Stopped looking at basses and gear. OK - need a tuner having retired the TC with built-in (for an Aguilar, so no pain). Don't even need strings - totally happy with string choice and even have a new set of the rounds to replace when they go off. And a Hercules stand for the Jazz. That's about it.
How's it feel? Great, really good. Not like I'm skimping with 3 fine basses, 2 or 3 rigs including the newly acquired GB combo. No excuses, just play. Get better, Attack the stuff I'm wary of, confront the weaknesses. There is nothing on Earth so fine as a great bass through a great rig on a good day.- Show previous comments 7 more

"because a Chapman Stick is not just for Christmas" That's right - it's for dry lips in winter.
Nice Warwick @prowla. If I was going to be led astray a Warwick 5 could do it. Funny, some here hate Warwicks, don't know why views are so polarised. Mind you, some like weird custom basses with lights on. I don't, there you go.
-
I have to say that I like the idea of not having a body to go with the neck bridge and machine heads. Saves the ears from a lot of incoming and unnecessary opinion on your choice of body style over theirs.
Other than that, I have no desire for a Chapman Stick even on a bitter Winter's day. It's more of a technical appreciation with me.
-
It just WORKS. Just getting to know my Aguilar TH350. Hard to make it sound bad - you have to shift knobs to silly extremes. Its native sound is just GOOD. Small shifts in mids and drive get me where I want to be from the punching P to the fluid vocals of the fretless. Hooked up to the TC RH212 cab, this is a serious compact rig. Hot Sh*t. Sorted. Next.

Selling gear is cleansing.
Buying stuff gives me a bit of a kick, but I sometimes get to a point where I wonder why I got that particular thing. Just shifting an electro acoustic (no idea why I got that at all), a small guitar amp (same) and a random bass I don't use or need. Out with the old, less is more, quality up, volume down... and all that.
Let's see how long this lasts then- Show previous comments 1 more
-
That's how it works - I've been doing well, an electro-acoustic, a combo and one bass all gone/going. And almost immediately I 'find' a head I fancy. Finding stuff you want is proportional to time spent looking, so serves me right.
But as a fellow BCer said to me a bit ago, buy secondhand and move it one if/when - any modest loss is like a lease cost👍

Revisiting playing with a pick on my P bass. Not called a Precision for nothing! 'The boys are back in town'. I'm using the really thick injection molded ones, 50p each from London Guitar Studio - but you can't slot them between the s'plate and body at the top which is where a pick belongs.

excellent @Kevsy71 - I love the crisp accurate attack you get, but alternate of course between fingers and pick, depending. The thick picks I'm using don't fit where John Deacon (and many others) keep them handy (works really well with a P or J). Here he has 2... money to burn

I play mainly finger style these days. Back in my punky youth, I played with a plectrum / pick most of the time.
Did a gig on Saturday night, and my fairly recently acquired JVP sounded immense! The pick really suited some songs
Those songs could have been played with fingers - but sounded all the better for using the pick
It was a Fender Precision, being played with a pick, by JJ Burnel that made me love the bass
