  1. Take a look at DHC Bass 1x12’s. They use Faital Pro or Sica (lower cost and in my hands indestructible so far). https://dhcbass.co.uk/shop/ The 2x10 uses Eminence.
  2. Interested to see you having problems with a bass cab. Before any experiments with side ports, or apertures or tuned ports start with the basics. I’ve been here and got bogged down with “technicalities”. Start with a sealed box if you can. This will show you the true sound of the drivers. As long as it’s well made and sealed you find how low the driver can go and be able to hear if the top end is sufficiently high enough for your “sound”. It’s essential that the driver is a tight fit to the baffle. I’ve had real issues with distortion when fitting new speakers to existing apertures which are slightly too large. I cut my baffles to each type of speaker. They do vary. Test to see if the speaker cone is happy to move more by cutting a small aperture of about 50mm in the baffle or any side of the box. You might find the the increased freedom for the cone is improving the bass or the efficiency (sound level). Get to this start point and we can discuss the next step.
  3. I really enjoyed the afternoon and would like to thank the organisers and participants. The presentation on reduced weight vs feel and sound was really interesting and thought provoking. As a maker of small bass cabs it was revealing how much interest there was in the short scale basses which produced a plummy, warm , soft but deep sound. As a jazz bass freak i use a much cleaner sound. I didn’t get chance to be too analytical but the stacked TC 1x12’s where throwing out that chewy bottom end in piles. The Barefaced cabs were a marvel too. I didn’t try too many basses as I’ve got the dreaded tennis elbow which struck me after playing someone’s bass at Bass Direct. It’s a surprise that some lovely basses have an action too high for easy playing. To all the players out there, it really isn’t difficult to truss the neck straight. I tried a lovely bass of an unknown brand which required a bit of a neck tilt adjustment. If anyone’s worried about this kind of work on a bass I’m happy to help if you come to my place in Walsall. My favourite was the Sadowsky ...it was the metro ie not made in New York and not chambered so a little weighty ....but hey this was a music machine. Thanks for letting me play it. I think it would have been better if we gave each member 10 mins to take us through their rig/basses/sound as the booming was hard to talk over and let y’all hear a DHC Bass cab. I’ll be back. It’s fun. Bass players are the good guys 😁. Please contact me if I can help you with a set up or a cab. 4. I’m hoping I can get to the bash with some examples of my 1x12 Neo cabs. I will bring pairs so (sound levels permitting) anyone can check out the full potential of small cabs. I’ll demo using my Cort GB74 as this is my workhorse. I also have an Anaconda Ultra J4 Elite which I hope to sell. I’m going to show how the side vents on my cabs really are effective and might add real information to a thread that was started on basschat some while ago. Hope to see you there. 5. I bought one of these Citronic drivers to replace a bass driver in a Peavey PA cab but fixed the problem (the braid to the coil had fractured). I was surprised at the build quality. Cambriic surround, raised spider and a vented magnet. I thrashed the speaker as a sub woofer before using it in a test cab. It’s a great driver despite its low price. It never gave up even when abused. I like it’s upper frequency response. I’ve bought over 10 now and had no quality issues. Each brand has its own sound and response and this one has its place for a 250 watt driver. Made in China but some expensive brand names do too. Just a thought but two of my 1x12 cabs are cheaper than one top brand.
  6. Thanks. Never joined in with the bass banter before but I hope I can make some useful contributions.
  7. Hi. I really enjoyed the discussions over my bass cabs. Using the handles as vents sprang from practical experience. I I made two bass cabs for my bands PA using 2 10” drivers I had purchased to replace 4 blown in an EBS cab. In the end EBS were so supportive and exported replacement drivers from Sweden at very reasonable cost so I was left with 4 10s. I run the sound for my band and we needed some oomph but with low funds I had to keep costs down. The handles were initially a cost down but their performance on stage and the ease of pick up and carry led me to use the same principle for a 1x12 Bass guitar cab. Again the result was good and I was amazed that I could hear my bass over the “noise” of a 8 piece Funk band.. The first cab used the low cost driver you mention but it took a hammering and continued to perform amazingly for years so I tried to pass on the low cost option to other players. I’ve had good feedback and to date no failures so low cost but not “cheap”. I have made a range now including 1x15, 2x6.5, 2x10 and 1x12. The switchable piezo tweeter I use follows many tests with larger bullets and dynamic horns etc but they were very brittle. I use bass drivers that have some natural top end (go above 3kHz) so the tweeter acts to support the top end not take the lot. Using the treble control on your guitar or amp and the switch provides full control over the top end. I now have a new range soon to be available through the Great British Bass lounge ( only deliverd this week). Apart from the 6.5s they are all Neodymium and they sound amazing. Sadly the cheap but cheerful will go after I’ve sold those few on e bay but they really didn’t deserve to die. FYI the new 12s are Faital Pro’s (first time of using) and I’m very impressed with these drivers. As a footnote: following years of agony over my sound and poring over technical details I have found something good using instinct and testing and practical use. I’ll take anything back you don’t like. Test if you can but give the eBay 12s a try if funds are short. In all enjoy your bass playing. These cabs help add to the fun. DHC ( David Clarke - “Final Funk’s” Bass player)
