  1. Just adjusted my double bass bridge down to where the strings are 5-8mm off the end of the fingerboard. It really brings out the growl, it's easier to get around, and it's a bit kinder on my hands given I don't get as much practice time as I'd like. But I feel like the old-school "real players dig in" guys will disapprove!

I guess playing style, string tension and other parts of the setup like the fingerboard relief can make quite a difference to where the optimum is. When I was spending more time playing each week and did a lot of unamped jams in noisy rooms, a higher action worked OK for me even with my Spiro Mittels, but there's a distinct voice that comes out with it at the current height too.

Yeah, I suspect a lot of the players who are my reference points for tone (which Danny certainly is) have a similar setup.

  3. not sure I like Chromes on my L1000... do I not like Chromes or not like flats?

I'd agree, Chromes didn't have the nice juicy mids that I liked about both the TI Jazz Flats I have now, or the Sadowsky Black Label flats I had before that.

  4. Is there a manufacturer who has or still makes self biasing valve bass amps?  The nearest amp tech to me lives in Hong Kong...700km away.

The Ampeg PF50T also has user-adjustable bias with LED indicators.  Not exactly self-biasing, but very user friendly.

  5. What do you think guys? Does bass cab with 2x12 without tweeter will be a good solution? 2 12'' can do the job without a tweeter ? (Eminence Beta 12A) Could you advice me some "boutique" high end stuff? I don't wanna another "factory" speaker. Thanks.

I'm happy using my homebuilt cabs with Beta 12As and no tweeter.  They have quite a bright sounding upper mid response even if they don't go very high.

  6. Im in tone heaven. Ampeg valve amp, Pbass and flatwounds. Who would of thought they went well together. I'm pretty sure I'm the first to discover this combination 😉 haha.

But if you're going to, I'd rather early Larry Graham or Chuck Rainey than the 80s thing, IMO!

It can be a pretty fun slap tone, if you like an old-school feel.

  8. New PJ day! And it's only 7lbs 4oz!! That's less than the PJs I'm wearing...

  9. Got my first finger blister in a long time last night, surprisingly on electric bass not double bass.

Heh, the very softest nickel flats, TI Jazz Flats! Band was working on a new tune with a busy 16th note bassline, I've played more upright than electric in the past couple of years and my right hand calluses are in the wrong place for it.

  10. From rounds to flats and now back to rounds. Twang! Boing!

I've never managed to stick with rounds for long in the last few years, but sometimes flats feel a bit too stiff and thumpy on the low strings.  Enjoying TI Jazz flats at the moment...

  11. Havering over whether to spring for an Ampeg PF 50t while they're still around at a good price. I don't absolutely need to, but OTOH I could certainly make good use of it...

Unfortunately for you, it's sounding pretty good so far.  So I guess it'll be socks again!

I did it!  Now to move some other gear around, presuming it works out for me.  Certainly ticks the boxes on paper...

  14. If you're worried about your strings not lining up exactly with your pickup pole pieces, it means you've got far too much time on your hands, you muppet!

    1. Beer of the Bass

      Beer of the Bass

I worry about spacing from the edge of the fingerboard, but pickups?  Never noticed it making a difference.  My guitar has a Gibson-spaced bridge humbucker with a Fender-spaced bridge, and I just know that'll annoy somebody somewhere...

  15. Just tried Roto 77 Monel Flats on my Jazz... Like! Tried La Bellas on it last week and they didn't really work. But they sound phenomenal on a P... erm... that's it. :|

Hmm, maybe the quality wobbled back when I had them.  Mine almost felt and looked like groundwounds.

Are they still rough feeling and slightly clanky sounding for flats?  I had a couple of sets in the 90s when I was starting out, and that's my abiding memory of them.
