  1. some mold has appeared in my music room, any ideas how dangerous this might be for my basses? Keep em in the case instead of hanging on a nearby wall?

Tonemould gives your instrument a more organic sound

  3. So: Ampeg Portaflex cabs... seems the cab top unclips to expose the inside. Why?

    (I'm considering a 210 so just wondering).

You can attach a head (e.g. PF-50T) to the top panel. Then for transporting it, you flip the top over so the head is hanging inside the cab and protected from knocks. It's based on the original Ampeg B-15 design.

  4. D'Addario strings have clarified on Twitter that it is pronounced Duh-Dairy-Oh. Who knew?!

It's a bit like Ibanez; the company's Japanese, took the name from a Spanish luthier, but have used an English pronunciation for ages - EYE-ba-nez, not ee-BAN-yeth

  5. Just heard this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBuOJF_rX40 , great bass tone, wondering how to get this tone

It's a Bass VI in the video, but yer average Precision with a plectrum and flatwounds gets most of the way there. Emphasise the mids, and a touch of overdrive. I like a compressor to give the notes some bounce.

  6. Went to an Ed Byrne gig last night... postponed from March 2020 :o well worth the wait though, haven't laughed so much in ages.

He's really superb, isn't he? I think I must've caught one of the very last dates on that tour before it got called off!

  7. How long do Fender typically keep models in production?
I'm really interested in getting hold of a ultra jazz bass V in mocha burst in the next year or so but not sure if they'll still be manufacturing them.

The American Ultra series (2019) replaced the American Elite series (2016), if that helps.
edit: And apparently American Elite replaced American Deluxe (launched 1995, updated 2004 and 2010)

  8. Spending my entire bass fund, plus a load extra on a bass will make me feel better about 2020 won't it?
    This is a shite year

I reckon so! I've finally succumbed to lockdown GAS, and ordered the bass I've been lusting after for a decade 😍

If you put flash icons on your sales thread title, I'm not even going to look at it.

Edit 9am 04oct20:  I include anything other than alphanumerics here.

  10. I just bought a Warwick LWA1000, special deal on Thomann. £275 for a 2 channel 1000w class A preamp powerhouse. Bargain!

It's a shame it's a boring black box - the original design with the wooden ends was a lot cooler!

  13. Hi, Which pro tuner will be good for intonation settings and for everyday use (home and gig)? I have my old Boss TU-12 but it's so old that it just break after 15 years or more now! I need something very accurate to set properly intotnation but also good for pedalbaord. It will be good to hold B and C string too. Thanks

      MartinB

Yeah, a strobe type like a Peterson or a Sonic Research Turbo Tuner is what you want for extreme accuracy

  14. I Wish, that's in E flat right? Do I need to detune everything a half step, just the E or shut up and this is played on a 5 you idiot, or am I tone deaf?

    1. MartinB

      MartinB

Your ears are right! I like to start with that Eflat on the 6th fret of A string - same pitch, but it's less of a jump to reach the next note:

      G ----------------------3---------
      D ------------------4-6---6-------
      A 6-----1---3-4-5-6---------3-4-5-
      E --2-4---4-----------------------

Yep, it's Eb. But the lowest note in the original bassline is an F# on the E string, so you should be fine on a four-string without detuning. Love this tune! It's a real workout for your left hand.

People give Amazon a lot of stinky poo - and rightly so - but one good thing they do is to let you pre-pay the customs fee so that the Post Office Royal Mail don't get to gouge you for the privilege.

  18. Think my Half Wound experiment is over, making my G&L sound a bit lifeless. Where to next.....Chromes? La Bella Golds? Or Newtone :scratch_one-s_head:

  19. First outdoor gig! I was expecting a numb right hand to give me trouble, but it never occurred to me how much I rely on the sense of touch in the left hand to judge distances between frets. Spent a lot of time looking at the fretboard!

To be honest I think we were all so excited at the prospect of paid gigs that we didn't really think about the practicalities! I had fingerless gloves, but my digits were already chilly by the time the gig started - I think the trick is to wear normal gloves for as long as possible and switch at the last minute. Doing it again next Saturday, so I'll have a chance to test my theory!
