  1. Got the series/parallel for my J bass with Dimarzio Model J pickups, 4 coils in series, this should be fun!!!

Anyone wired these in parallel internally with a series/parallel switch? That will be my next thing to try

  2. Anyone here use short or medium scale Rotosound swing bass? Just put a set on my Hofner and the E string has some really weird overtones, wondering if these die down once the strings break in.

This scenario happened on my Jazz Bass 77s flats but itdid dissipate after checking for twist and making sure it was at the right witness point. The katter took 3/4 attempts and then after a week or two the E string started to settle down

You could contact Rotosound and thety will probably send you a new E string out.

I seem to think that I read about this issue ages ago where some short scale Roto's had weird overtones. It may have been on Scott Whitley's website which was called something like shortscalebass.com but doesn't look like the site is still active for me to go back and check. Either way, IIRC, you're not the first to notice this. But I always use long scales strings on my short scale basses and have never had any issues and I've been doing it for a few years now 😀

You are right about the comments on the Scott Whitley bass site Osiris, I remember those as well.

  3. Loving 90-35 gauge, nothing lost in tone and so easy to play

I use custom EB Slinky 40-55-75-100 and I love it. Very balanced. But everything below 45-105 is perfect for me. 45-105 and higher sound very good too but for gigs and playing pick I think. Practice couple hours a day or playing slap/tap, etc. is a nightmare on high tension/gauge strings.

35 - 90's make Rick 4003's so much easier to play & set up IMO.

Only use them on my Rick but what a difference.

    4. Ricky 4000

      Ricky 4000

Rotosound 30-90s. And they're called 'Funkmasters'. What's not to like!?

  4. Hmm it would seem that Seymour Duncan secure there pickup wires with Pritt stick, or maybe spit and Blu tack

    1. Bassfingers

      Bassfingers

      +1 on that!

I have had to re-solder two of my Antiquities P Bass pick ups so far. One went on a gig and left me bass - less (yes I probably should have taken a back up!)

    2. shoulderpet

      shoulderpet

Yowsers, is bad enough with most Seymour Duncans but the antiquities cost twice as much, you would expect more for the cost

  5. And another amplug bites the dust, honestly even for the relatively modest price they go for the build quality is shocking, another case of £5 build quality on a £40 device

      MrSpace

Yeah I have both EHX and Amplug, sound and build quality is better with EHX but I find myself using the Amplug for the Aux in and drum machine. Hasn't died on me yet fingers crossed.

    3. Chienmortbb

      Chienmortbb

The problem is that you are using them. Keep them in the box and they are fine.

NUX Mighty Plug. Rechargeable, bluetooth control (but has presets so you don't have to use this), bluetooth streaming, suitable for guitar and bass.

  6. And the Prosteels are off, bl@!dy dreadful things, as soon as I put them on half my midrange vanished, curiousity got the better of me and it didn't pay off.

Fresh set of Rotosounds on and wow the Rotos sound so much better, the growl is back and I actually have other frequencies besides low bass and high treble.

I haven't tried that many steel strings but Rotos have good mids, Prosteels I found to be very lacking in mids, and this is in a bass with a very midrange heavy pickup

    3. mcnach

      mcnach

I had the ProSteels a while ago. I remember feeling the same way initially, but because I rarely like fresh steels in particular, I waited a bit. Once they're used a bit they sound a lot better, and the mid-scoop goes away. In my opinion they were not as good as DR Fat Beams but after 2-3 weeks of regular use they are in the same ballpark.

    4. shoulderpet

      shoulderpet

Yeah I dont think the Prosteels would work for me regardless of breaking in period, I thought I would give them a try rather than my usual Rotosounds and they seemed to suck all the life out of my tone, way too sterile and polite, when I put the Rotos back on I was amazed how much better they sounded

  7. After a Dimarzio model p or split p, message me if you have one you want to sell

      Chaddy

If you get stuck there is a x2 sets on Fleabay, DP122 Model P for £89.99

      shoulderpet

Thanks, i wanted to stock to around £50ish, ended up ordering an Entwistle PBXN pickup

  8. Hmm not sure about these Prosteels, they seem to sound good on some basses and rubbish on others, lots of boom and ping, pretty much zero midrange

    1. shoulderpet

      shoulderpet

And the strangest thing has happened, came back to my bass a couple hours later and the strings sound better, brighter, clearer, punchier....odd

  9. And again Royal mail have failed to deliver, didn't even leave a card, the website says they tried to deliver this morning but no card, no knock at the door (have been in all day), someone's telling porkies.

Just wanted a cheap harness to try out series/parallel but at this rate I might just end up hard wiring the bass in series

I remember one time when my Dad was painting some skirting by his front door, a card from the Post Office came fluttering through the letterbox saying that they had tried to deliver a package but nobody was in.  My Dad opened the front door and confronted the startled Postman, saying that nobody had knocked and where's my parcel.  The Postman admitted that he didn't actually have it as he had left it at the sorting office, my Dad told them in no uncertain terms to go and get it and bring it immediately, which they sheepishly did.

I do not trust the Post Office whatsoever, lazy, bungling idiots the lot of them.

    3. yorks5stringer

      yorks5stringer

Royal Mail took 7 days to deliver a packet of strings from Warwick to Somerset, First Class. We all thought they were lost.

Can we please remember that it is Royal Mail who deliver letters/parcels and not The Post Office, please. Delivery of mail is nothing to do with The Post Office.

Is sorted now, turns out it was a 2 way truss rod and not a 1 way so my error

  11. Ok so looks like I have a Harley Benton Jazz bass on the way, now to sort out the matter of gig money owed

  12. Anyone got a Dimarzio Split P they want to get rid of?

yep I do. PM me if you're interested and i'll send you some pics. Alex

actually, just realised you want split. Mines a 70s model P i think

Ahh ok, the split p has blades and the model p has the adjustable pole pieces

  13. Just heard this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBuOJF_rX40 , great bass tone, wondering how to get this tone

It's a Bass VI in the video, but yer average Precision with a plectrum and flatwounds gets most of the way there. Emphasise the mids, and a touch of overdrive. I like a compressor to give the notes some bounce.

    3. shoulderpet

      shoulderpet

Thanks, I think a compressor is probably a big part of that sound, it is pretty middy but there is a good amount of punch to the notes

  14. Oh band dramas, the sh!@ has really hit the fan with this one, honestly I sometimes wonder why we put ourselves through this

Oh dear - band "troubles". I'm in several outfits myself. It can take quite a bit of planning ahead, to make sure there are no clashes. But generally, I let everyone know when I'm playing with other bands / duos. Most of them have met each other, and seemed to get on pretty well. But I've had this sort of thing with other bands in the past.
Hope it gets sorted - but it sounds like guitarist #2 was either not informed, or is unhappy with the 2 of you having another project.

    3. shoulderpet

      shoulderpet

@prowla I think part of the issue was that the guitarist who was whizzed about it felt like we had stolen the gig from the rest of the band, also probably doesn't help that he is friendly with the people we did the gig for, I am guessing there is a bit of wounded pride/ego going on there

    4. shoulderpet

      shoulderpet

Anyway,  I had a phone call from the drummer yesterday saying that the guitarist had phoned him and was ranting about it, the other guitarist is now saying that he has now admitted he was told about the gig but now claims that this was all part of a plan to steal the gig from him, on Saturday I was like omg this is awful and now I am just sick of hearing about it and am thinking that this situation is just pathetic and sad now

  15. On my way to see The Chameleons 🙂

  16. Ok, tried some Daddario rounds on the Vintera fully expecting them to stay, the TI jazz flats are going back on, flats on this bass just feels and sounds right

    1. acidbass

      acidbass

Which D'Addarios?  I found the XLs to be a bit too springy on my Jazz Bass.  Heard the NYXLs are a better choice but have yet to try them!

    2. shoulderpet

      shoulderpet

Was the XL's, I assume you are talking about the feel of the strings when you say springy, if so then yes the NYXL's feel tighter

  17. 1st ding in a relatively recently received bass :( Small crack in the paintwork and a small dent, no chips thankfully and pretty minor but surprised how easily Fenders paintwork cracks

    1. lowregisterhead

      lowregisterhead

😬 The first ding is always the worst. Perhaps Fender are introducing a new 'easy-relicing' range??

    2. shoulderpet

      shoulderpet

Haha , Maybe they are, I bashed it against a plywood table and it was hard enough that I checked my bass afterwards but light enough that I honestly didn't expect to find anything

  18. Decided on Duncan SPB-3, if anyone has a set they want to offload drop me a pm

  19. Good lord, how expensive are Mim Fenders now!! Nearly £700 for an Mim p bass!! I remember when you could get one for £300ish new

The JMJ mustang is MiM & costs around a grand these days. Worth every penny as well!

  20. Oh man another bass with issues😡 .  Frets are tarnished, I gave them a vigorous wiping with a damp cloth to see if it would come off and no joy, I am reluctant to order the 1200 grit and start working on the frets on a new bass in case I bodge it

      shoulderpet

Thanks, I have some silver polish I'm going to give a try, I figure with how soft silver is it should be fine for polishing up some frets, fingers crossed that it works

    3. shoulderpet

      shoulderpet

Ok so I have tried the polish on 1 of the frets as a test and it has removed the tarnish but the fret that I have polished is a silvery colour whilst the other frets seem to be naturally a kind of slight brass colour, is this something I should be worried about?  I am guessing not since abrasives would be used during a fret dressing that would have a similar effect ?

    4. SpondonBassed

      SpondonBassed

      You needn't worry.

The polished colour of frets tends to be lighter than when tarnish has darkened them.  They will gradually return to the darker colour as the polished surface oxidises.

  21. Wow, Prosteels may well be the worst strings I have tried, its like having the mids on -15 with a boost in the bass just to further emphasize those missing mids

You've just described the perfect string for METAL 😂

    4. shoulderpet

      shoulderpet

perfect for being drowned out in the mix, I kept the Daddario on for all of about 2 hours, I know some people say you should let strings break in and if these were flats I would agree but I like a bright bass tone and rounds to me always sound there best when they are fresh on.  Newtone strings on the other hand I cant say enough good things about, its just that 2 week wait for strings that sucks

Trust me I won't be complaining if/when it snows, you can always put more layers on if it's cold but if it's 30 + degrees there's not much you can do about that
