Having had a few posh basses over the last few years (Spector Euros, USA Musicpersons in many flavours, USA G+L's, Sandberg California and suchlike) I'm now pretty settled on 3 that I paid less than £500 each for.
A Zon Sonus Standard (the Korean import version) that i picked up used and I love it to bits. Can't ever see me selling this one as they're super rare. Real modern zingy sound but with proper depth to it.
A Cort A4 Plus that I picked up used recently for way less than half the £800 RRP. Its a stunning bass and feels worth twice the full money. Easily on par with my old Spector and much more comfy to play. The neck is probably the most comfy neck I've ever had on a bass.
And I still have the 50s Classic Lacquer P Bass that a certain Mr B House sold me a few years back at a bargain price.
Lol indeed - I’ve not bought anything for under £500 but I’ve certainly sold for under £500! 😃

Truly you are the Hugh H of the bass world… -

I do. Like the Hugh Hefner of the bass world.
play them all…love some, regret few…
I like what you did with the fluffy bunny tails on that Fender….But I thought the ears on the Yamaha went a bit far.

Thinner, or narrower? I find most P necks wider, but thinner front to back, and Jazz necks the opposite….

(Hee hee, only joking - got to be both because otherwise you’re just delaying the inevitable. You never offer the option for something you actually want to keep)

I’m quite liking the fact that retailers are now getting us to vote on what they sell us next.

Another cheapy worth grabbing is the old Korean Cort C4p, they have a Fishman piezo bridge and really tight build quality despite looking rather plain. I picked one up for £90 and still use it as my backup bass, albeit with a regular bridge due to the original preamp failing. Last one I saw on eBay went for under £200.
That Cort looks like a bargain! -

Yeah I regret not buying the one near me, I had a quick play of it and it felt great. From what I can gather there's a lot of variation in the tops.
The HK Custom basses from Germany had a similar vibe to those Vintage ones, wish I'd have grabbed one when they were floating around on eBay for £350, basically a straight ripoff of a Marleaux Consat!:
Most of my bass playing and owning has centred on P basses. I got a J recently and that would be adventurous for me, were it not that I took a flyer on the Shuker Uberhorn. My experience with that has put me firmly into the liking weird and wacky, custom and odd. The HKs look good…

I like Albacores anyway, they have a nice tench on.

Oh for cod's sake you lot. This is a discussion about strings, and these fishy puns are distracting from the flow of conversation. Shoaly you can see that? There's a time and a plaice for this sort of thing. I trout it will stop you tho. Hhhhh

Exactly what era was the era where basses “bellied” so the action was high??
Fret not though…

The SGC bass collection basses really impressed me.
Lovely things.
Shockingly, I’ve never owned one - but have owned Godlyke and Tune basses - of a similar ilk.
Tune have always fascinated me..

Been out and about today folks - so sorry I've only just caught up!
Loads more great suggestions here for me to do some further research tonight. I'm definitely getting inspired to acquire some of the more affordable offerings out there to give them a go.

Lol, for the first time ever I wanted to use the correct term for female dogs, in the right context as well, but the swear filter won't let me!!
Anyway, my point was supposed to be about the misinterpretation of "string noise"

My grandad didn't die in two world wars so you could have string noise.
My dog has no nose either..

My strings make a noise.
Given how much I've spent on basses and amplifiers I'd be really bloody cross if they didn't

What the heck is that, and why isn’t it available over here? That’s got a proper Ampeg vibe going on and looks great.- 1

@Al Krow Actually, one thing I’ve not got is a choice of fretted and fretless which play well and sound good that I wouldn’t mind leaning against a window ledge down the dog and duck.
I can’t see myself taking the Shuker for such a gig - recording and jams, yeah, but get within 5 metres of joe public? Nope.
Not quite the same for the CS Jazz, but I’d prefer not to have to watch out for 4 grands worth of Jazz in a tent in a muddy field.
So perhaps the giggable and not worry angle is one factor. Specially for fretless.

@Bridgehousejust curious - you say you're "missing out", but is there anything you feel that your current herd is not bringing to the party? Or are you looking to trade down to something cheaper?
In my case I've found a bass (my BB 2005) that I instantly fell for and, because I don't feel precious about it or worried it might get dinged when out at the Dog n Duck in the same way I certainly did about the bass it replaced, it's already become a goto gigging bass for me. The fact that it sounds great and plays / feels beautifully obviously doesn't hurt either!
Nope. Don’t think I’m missing out on anything. The two main basses I’ve got are absolute keepers and the partscasters are going nowhere either. In fact, it’s probably the first time I’ve had a crop that I’m not thinking of moving on at all. This was more of a realisation that I’ve not had a cheaper bass before - and I’ve got the usual curiosity gas that one gets from time to time, and I’m wondering if I should satisfy that with some more bargain oriented goodness.

Also take a look at some of the musicman sub/Sterling range (not the USA Sterling.)
they play and sound great with right strings and set upI've had a USA Stingray - liked it a lot but it wasn't getting played enough to justify hanging on to it. I'm hoping if I got a few cheaper basses I wouldn't feel I needed to get rid of them so quick if they weren't getting used as much. I don't use my partscasters as much as I could, but there's no way they are going!
