  1. For sale is my Olympic White P bass. It's seen action on several continents and has a few battle scars to prove it.

It has started to fade to a nice vintage cream.

Truss rod is smooth, everything works as it should. I bought it new with a white scratch plate and also an additional tort plate at the same time. Currently wearing the white. Frets are good, Schaller strap lock buttons installed.

Shod with La Bella flats & will include unused DR Hi Beams too.

Soundwise it does the P bass thing. Has a fairly chunky neck. A good working bass!

No hard case but can include a soft case.

Sale only, no trades, pick up only. May be able to meet up in central London for exchange of bass/cash/bank transfer!

Weight is 4.2kg or 9lb 5oz in old money.

    £850.

  2. Prefer the second bass. However it's so close as to be immaterial certainly for live and probably also recording. Go through some plug-ins, nice valve compressors and eq and either bass will sound fab and different again. And that's before mixing eq, mastering eq/compression.

But in those 3 points you are cherry picking what you want to hear and skewing the argument if you take it in isolation.

How about “you just won’t sound ‘better’ *wink*”

    and

”...bass is an instrument that really benefits from compression”

”...compression is an enigmatic....tool amongst bass players”

People will always fit an argument for what they want, or if not understood find a reason to call it futile.

Took the words right out of my mouth!

Try this, Anthony Jackson is a bit more on the front as Steve Smith is a bit more "discreet" than Simon Phillips or Steve Gadd. Hiromi is the same, terrific and exuberant at the same time :

    Nice! Fabulous pianist.

  5. The lowest notes on a piano are full of overtones and harmonics. Take the lid off when you next have the chance and compare the lowest note with the octave up. The overtones are distinctly different. You'll notice almost no 'heft'.

Someone will have a graph of individual note frequency responses!

It depends on what you are having to amplify. For example... If I was playing with a reggae tone, the larger voice coil would (all other factors remaining the same) be a better shout.

What you have to remember is this, dedicated bass guitar cabs rarely sport the same quality of drivers found in the comparable prices PA cabs - so you are onto a winner on a performance point. Whether you want the flat response of a PA cab vs say the colouring of a bass cab, well, that's a different thing - but that's where your modelling comes in.

Is there an advantage (for bass guitar) in a larger voice coil in the HF driver, all other things being equal? I ask because RCF make great play of the advantages for vocal reproduction.

    A technical point I know...

Looking at some FRFR speakers, i'm thinking of staying with RCF, just because of how impressed ive been with our bands PA.
How important is the voice coil going to be for a bass player?
For example the 715s are around £550.
But the 725s, and 735s etc are all around £870.
I understand the need for these if the main use for the speakers is singing. Do i need a bigger voice coil for bass though?
What say yee experts of all things FR/FR?

I was wondering about this as well. The more expensive offerings have larger voice coils on both woofer & compression driver. This seems to allow not only more power handling but also allows the compression driver to do more of the work : The crossover frequency is lower with the premium cabs so the HF driver covers more of the frequency spectrum

Is this a big deal for bass guitar? @EBSfreak what say you Sir?

Does this mean there are new P-retro preamps out there? I have been looking for quite some time to no avail.

Me too. The J East website says they are out of stock.
