It's all down to ownership; John's car for instance.  John owns the car, so it's John's car.  A pluralised CD's implies CD has ownership of something.  It's no more valid than banana's or sprout's.

     CD’s is neither a plural nor possessive. It’s a contraction. It’s more valid than banana’s as banana’s isn’t a contraction.

Can we stop with the greengrocer's apostrophes when we're posting about CDs?  Just because a word or abbreviation ends with an s it doesn't necessarily need a leading apostrophe; it's CDs, not CD's.  Records, not record's.  Albums, not album's.  Does my freaking nut in.

    Going for a coffee.

Is CD’s a contraction of compact discs, meaning the apostrophe is valid? A little like doesn’t.

I have every single Z-Block release apart from the one you were on :-((  (although I do recognise the band name from John Peel).

I was a massive fan of both Reptile Ranch and YMG (I saw them play at the Boat Club here in Nottingham where they were persuaded to do 5 encores by a very enthusiastic audience and only allowed to leave the stage because they had no more songs left to play).

I was introduced to Z-Block by John (IIRC) from Puritan Guitars who "bought" (they were available for free to anyone who sent us a blank C-60 and an SAE) a copy of our first cassette album and then wrote back berating us for having released it on a free cassette rather than putting some of the tracks out as a single or EP as in his opinion the music was certainly good enough. I had to politely explain to him that firstly even at Desperate Bicycles production prices producing actual vinyl was way beyond what we could afford, and that secondly since we didn't gig I didn't see how we would ever shift any copies. We did distribute over 100 copies of the cassette in less than 6 months though.

This is possibly of no interest to anyone, but you’ve got me started.  In 1978 I was still at school and lived 20 miles from Cardiff.  I was at school with Spike Reptile’s younger brother, so saw Reptile Ranch and YMG four or five times before YMG signed to Rough Trade.  There were typically fewer than 10 people at those gigs.  At the time of the Nottingham Boat Club gig, I was living in Ashby, 20 miles from Nottingham.  I was still at school and couldn’t get to Nottingham for that gig, though I did see Joy Division at a disused cinema in Derby with 20 other people.  Last week Peter Hook signed the scratch plate of my Hooky six…

This is mine it’s an original and an early one. You can see that the fretboard has been changed. This happened before I bought it - I suspect it was fretless originally. It’s a lovely thing to play.

I think that may have been mine a long time ago.  I sold it about 16 years ago.  A lady bought it for her husband and picked it up from my office in Studley.

The Midnight Circus (named after The Pretty Things song).

Off the back of a glowing review by Johan Kugelberg in Ugly Things magazine of our contribution to "Angst In My Pants" we were asked to produce a retrospective CD for Chicago's Hyped To Death records which is still available even though the cassettes and vinyl are long gone...

Just listened to it on YouTube.  I liked it.  Then I took a look at the list.  Surprised to see the band I played in back in ‘79 are listed.

My first experience in a "commercial" recording studio (i.e one we had paid for the privilege of using), was in 1980 at a 4-track facility in some "out-buildings" behind one of the music shops in Leicester. It was a fairly basic set up with a TEAC/Tascam 4-track reel-to-reel machine and an HH 4-bus mixing desk. The only effect available was some delay/reverb produced by running the signal out to a spare stereo reel-to-reel machine. At the time were still doing our home recording in the percussionist's parent's lounge and were used to all the high frequencies being absorbed by the soft furnishings and the fact that we were recording on compact cassette, so we didn't think to compensate for the fact that we were now playing in a far better acoustic environment and being capture by much better microphone (and that the results wouldn't have to go through two further generations of cassette tape before they reached our listeners). Therefore the results were a rather thin and overtly bright sound. That didn't stop John Peel from playing our songs when they were released as part of the "Angst In My Pants" double EP on Deleted Records.

    Which band was this please?

Isn't the fact that you have a separate filter for each pickup and then blend between the two an essential part of the Wal sound?

Yes.  Plus I think each pickup pole is individually wired to the pre. And the pickups are big.

I've bought a couple of things that have had extra tracks, demo versions etc. on them & I never found them to be worth listening to.

That’s what Spotify is for. You can listen to those six CD extended sets of a 40 minute album without a huge investment. I agree, those demo versions are usually a one listen experience.

My point, two years ago, was that you could likely have picked up a vintage Shergold off eBay for not much £££.

But you couldn’t. The Shergold bass 6 has been very hard to get for a long time. My point isn’t that I was right.  At the time, you said I was an idiot for suggesting a Shergold, and you’ve talked about how people do not understand the Eastwood business model. The business model is to reissue quirky designs that are no longer generally available. The Shergold is a perfect example.

Read the thread mate, try and grasp what Eastwood are all about and embrace that; they would never have made a 4005, a BassV or a Serek clone.

To be fair, you said the same about the Shergold Bass 6, which is now available from Eastwood. I think they would make a 4005 if it wasn’t for the legal problems.

    Nice thread resurrection

I wonder whether its worth suggesting one of these as the original manufacturer has no interest...

Apparently, these were not popular when available.  I wonder what the manufacturing cost would be.  Obviously never going to happen.

Let’s get back to that Basschat bass.  How about and 8 string acoustic?  Twin neck bass / mandola?

It's a little sad (and to be honest, not unexpected) that a discussion which started out barely 36 hours ago as the possibility to actually do something fun, has deteriorated into the usual knob-gag innuendos and Carry-On-esque double-entendres.  No wonder the country is in such a state.

Christ on a bike @Sercet, if you want a Shergold, there's eBay.  There's an original four string one up on there now with a buy it now of less than £400.00; I'm sure you could convert it to a baritone for somewhat less than this project will cost you.

    I need a drink.

Turns out this wasn’t that dumb a question after all.

For bass in GarageBand I just go straight into my iPad from my iRig HD2, select the Clean DI which is basically a clone of the Avalon U5, click the tone to 3 and away you go.

I do this too.  I also use the standard compressor and one of the bass eq settings c
