It's not a pre Gibson series as the first Gibson serial number is 1094...

Check this from Michael Tobias himself :

"After several attempts to move the business to larger, better equipped facilities, I sold Tobias Guitars to Gibson on 1/1/90. The first Tobias Gibson serial number was 1094. At that point, Gibson was instrumental in moving us to a bigger shop in Burbank and setting us up with a great spray booth and dust collection system. We finally met So. Cal safety codes. Basses built during the 1990-1992 era were built initially by the same crew that had helped establish Tobias Basses as one of the most sought after basses on the planet. We added several people during 1990, and ended up with a great ten-man shop.

Business was still very good. We were not able to make anywhere near enough basses to fill the orders. Instead of trying to jack up production, we tried to get outside vendors to build for us. We had 110 Model T basses made for us by a very fine builder in New England, and then we got the Terada factory in Nagoya, Japan to make the Standard bass for us. This was and is a great bass, but the dollar-to-yen ratio killed the project. There were about 400 Standards.

Late in 1992, it was decided that in best corporate interests Tobias Guitars would move to Nashville. After much deliberation, no one from the original Tobias Guitars crew went to Nashville. The final LA Tobias/Gibson serial number is 2044. Despite Gibson's ownership of Tobias, all of the basses made up to 2044 were built by my regular crew. We also built about 60 basses that were not numbered or finished by us. Those would be the first production from Tobias/Nashville.

I left the company in December of 1992, and was a consultant for Gibson as they set up operations in Nashville. They had some trouble at first, but have since done a fairly good job making Tobias basses."

To be complete, this is also important :

By contractual agreement, Michael's consulting agreement with Gibson had a one year non competition term. That ended in December of 1993.

Yes, I know. The important part here is "The final LA Tobias/Gibson serial number is 2044. Despite Gibson's ownership of Tobias, all of the basses made up to 2044 were built by my regular crew. ". So it's not pre gibson ownership, but it is pre gibson manufacturing. And that is where the big difference is.

Hi, are you sure the string spacing is 16mm? I had a 5 string version and it was 17.5mm

I took of the g and c string and measured from the bottom of the groove in the saddle with a caliper. I can do it again, but I think I got the right measure.

  3. Up for sale is a VERY nice Alembic Europa 5. The previous, and original owner, was a collector and didn't play his collection much. This bass has VERY little sign of use.
The bass has a mahogany body (standard) with a quilted maple top (see spec sheet) The neck is an 7 piece multi laminate (upgrade). It has the usual Europa electronics, with volume, pickup balance, filter, and switches for bass and treble boost/cut. The bridge sits in a massive brass block. And she sings! The neck would push the price from Alembic to around $15.000!

Comes in original hard bag with papers, and shipping is included.
I do apologize for some of the photos. Had some trouble with the light shine back.

If you want to talk before buying, I will happily arrange for an online meeting where we can talk and I can play the bass to you.

  4. Up for sale is a gorgeous Alembic Europa 5 fretless. The previous, and original owner, was a collector and didn't play his collection much. This bass has VERY little sign of use, and a store could probably sell it as new.

  5. This stunner of a bass came to me as a trade, so I had to google to find out info about it. It appears that it is one of only 4!! basses of this type!

And it is a handmade Bacchus Woodline DX5 Sakura. Neck is maple with a purple heart fingerboard. Body is ash with a rather thick sakura (japanese cherry) top. Pickups is Bacchus own, and hardware is Gotoh. The nut is 46mm wide, and spacing at the bridge is 19mm.
The bass is passive, with 2x volume and tone. Pull out the tone know and the pickups gets wired in series.
The bass comes in original gigbag, and will be padded up good and boxed before shipping.

And how does it sound? Well, you can check the Buddha playing this exact bass here:

Here is one of the other 3 sakuar's: https://reverb.com/item/6303909-bacchus-woodline-dx5-sakura-custom-2017-sakura

  6. Hi
Up for grabs is my 1984 Fender Precision Elite II. After what I've been told these basses are quite rare. So grab your's while you can!!!

The Elite was Fender's top of the range model for a few years way back. If you are interested you can read more about the history here: https://www.vintageguitar.com/16076/fender-precision-bass-elite-ii/
This model is in very good condition. Very little fret wear, and not many marks on the bass at all.
A previous owner did (for some reason) drill another hole in the headstock for a tuner. Why I don't know. This has been fixed by a pro guitar technician (http://www.guldenguitars.no/). He also replaced the 2 volume pots and the nut. The nut is made from mammoth bone. The hole in the head is the reason I'm selling this so cheap. The bass sound and plays very nice. The electronics was designed by Paul Gagon (I've been told), and is quite special. This demo will give you a clue:

The bass come in the original case, and price include shipping (to EU & UK).

The bass is also for sale locally, and might be withdrawn from sale on Basschat.

Wow, They don't turn up that often, do Vigier Series 11 passion basses!! Alas sold mine, but I am in the very fortunate position of having a series 111 four string. You may regret this? If you have to, heaven forbid, that you ever have to revert back to a four string bass!!😀 Lol  Arguably the most stable best playing necks in all of bassdom in my humble opinion....That is one of the many reasons they do not come up for sale  that often!! Good luck with the sale of this beauty..someone will be happy. 😀👍

The neck on this bass is just fabulous! I've had 3 Status with graphite necks and a modulus, and was very surprised by the condition of this neck. They don't get any better!
And yes, I might regret it.
