Saying you don't recognize one of the world's top bass player as a bass player is either trolling or straight up ignorance .

If you can't feel Paul or recognize him as a bass player, you really should consider dropping bass and trying another instrument.
Hahahaha he said almost the exact same comment word for word to me because I said I wasn't a fan of Jaco. This guy is like a broken record, trawling the forums accusing people of trolling and telling them to stop playing bass. What a joker.

It's trolling, no back pedaling.

How is clarifying my point 'backpedaling'? I haven't gone back on a single thing I've said...

I've read all the replies Maybe not as blatant as mine, but my sentiment is shared by others here on this topic.

And the same goes for me, plenty of people who agree. It works both ways.

I'm not sure why you've gotten so uptight about the fact that I heard 'aimless noodling' in his music. That's my opinion and I have every right in the world to express that. And (as I've already reiterated) I asked for people to give me examples of his music that might change my mind!! What more do you want?! I'm openly admitting I want my mind to be changed!!!

If you disagree with me then that's absolutely fine, that's actually what I wanted! It'd be boring if everyone agreed with this post, I wanted people to challenge what I said and to prove me wrong in the name of musical exploration! But show me why, give me examples like I asked for, don't just sit there repeating yourself over and over again calling me a troll for voicing my opinion. Check my other topics, I ask a lot of questions, I haven't set out to get anyone riled up. I had no idea that a simple post like this would cause such a 'crap'storm to be honest, it's quite baffling to me why you'd get so upset about a difference in musical opinion.

But for the sake of being mature about this, I apologise if my honest current opinion of Jaco's music has upset you or hurt your feelings. As someone who is about 40 years my senior I hope you can do the same now and just respect my opinion.

Thanks again to everyone who has debated/discussed this topic maturely and constructively! I have a lot of musical research to do this weekend :)

Ok, I'm happy to argue this out.

If you post a deliberately troll-ishly worded post (labeling someone universally renowned for being one of the most important musicians of the last century as "not all that") and then saying he sounds like someone noodling in a guitar shop, don't be surprised if you get called ignorant. It's the same as walking into the Tate and telling everyone about how you think Picasso just looks like a bunch of random crap done by a 2 year old. Or going into a theatre and telling everyone about how Shakespeare is just a load of weird words. It comes across as deeply naive and provocative. That's how you normally choose to start a 'mature discussion', is it?

You are entitled to your opinion, but it just comes across as trolling.

For the record I am not a big Jaco fan either, but it doesn't take too many brain cells to figure out that there was a lot of talent and ability there.
Well firstly, I didn't say 'he's NOT all that', I asked 'IS he all that', which is a question rather than a statement like you're suggesting. It was intended as a means for people to either come and say 'yes, he is *insert explanation*' or 'no, he isn't *insert explanation*'. The best headlines/first sentences are meant to spark debate, for those who are capable of articulating their opinions without the use of insults.

Yes, my opinion is that the tracks I've heard reminded me noodling you hear in a guitar shop. I've not listened to every track of his, nor am I saying that everything he's done sounds this way. If you read through this thread, there are others who agree with this opinion of mine, would you go as far as to call us all ignorant trolls or simply people with opinions? I often go to galleries and I almost always hear people criticise classics or pieces I like*/appreciate, and that's perfectly normal in my mind because I'm capable of processing opposing opinions without employing insults or put downs.

Finally, at no point did I claim he didn't have talent or ability.

Overall I think you're over-exaggerating what I said massively whilst you've misinterpreted a question and an opinion for statements... Which simply is not the case.

4. Thanks to everyone who gave genuine helpful responses/suggestions, I plan to check all of it out at some stage!

As to project_c and blue it's a shame you feel the need to respond in the aggressive and self-righteous manner that you have, it's people like you that tarnish forums for others.
Before I even said anything I stated that music is subjective, ergo, this is purely my opinion. I've been completely honest about my opinion and then as you can see, I've asked for suggestions that might change my mind because I'm always open to a fresh perspective.
I figured this was the best platform to express my current point of view in the hopes that it might be changed, not for people like you to say I shouldn't be playing bass or that I'm deeply ignorant because I'm not currently a fan of one specific player.

This is a place for friendly discussion and exploration, not for people like you to climb onto your pedestal in an attempt to put others down. Perhaps you both need to learn how to maturely disagree with others.

5. Of course all music is totally subjective but what I've heard of Jaco Pastorius has been a total let down compared to what I've heard other people say about him*
Granted, I've only heard some of the most well known tracks and to me it was just disjointed... It sounded like I'd just walked into any guitar shop in the world... Aimless noodling...

Anyone got any suggestions that may change my mind?

6. Hi!
Looking to get back into playing live, last time I was in a regular gigging band playing weekly around London/South England was early 2013 but I probably practice more now than I did then!

Current gear is in my sig.
I enjoy playing music ranging across rock, electronic, hip-hop but I'm flexible and enjoy playing and listening to most styles and like experimentation.
People around my age (22) would be good but this isn't a requirement.

Feel free to PM me for more information (or email if you're not a member: "][email protected])
Cheers!

Can I ask what sort of music (other than GnR tributes) you guys are using Chorus on? Any examples?
Bands like Warpaint use a soft chorus on bass, as do Tool in a more prominent way, as they do with a lot of effects on bass. For me, I wanted it for spacey ambient playing. Bands like Rage against the Machine used modulation on bass in a heavy way, it's just all about what sounds good to you I guess!

What would you guys recommend as a rather bright. shimmery chorus? I'm more into smooth than any sort of warble. More air than water. The first chorus (first fx pedal in fact) I ever tried, DOD Deep Freeze, is still my favourite sound-wise. I did have two however, and both kept having problems with the footswitch. Now I'm kind of looking for one to have it rehoused, but they go for crazy prices and the rehousing can get expensive too. Anything currently in production that can fit what I'm looking for?
The Earthquaker Sea Machine V2 can make some very nice shimmery sounds, it's perhaps the best chorus I've used for both guitar and bass I think.

9. I have a Nordell Audio Power Core, great little power supply.
It has seven 100mA outputs and one 500mA output, along with 3 higher voltage outputs which I don't use/won't use any time soon.

My issue is I have/will have 9 pedals on my board. One can be powered off of my TU3, which leaves 8 pedals to be powered from the power supply(including the tuner)

I'm wondering if it'll be safe to use the 500mA output for one of the pedals on my board, perhaps the TU3? The instruction booklet states that this output produces a MAX current of 500mA and is 'suitable for digital effects'.

I know nothing about anything circuit/electrical related so I was hoping someone could give me their opinion as to whether this output is safe to use on a standard Boss pedal(that will be powering another pedal too) or another pedal on its own?

I don't know that any modulation pedals can 'suck the low end out'... probably why you hardly ever see bass-specific modulation pedals. I've not tried the bass chorus deluxe, so can't comment on that, but I have the MXR analog chorus, and it sounds great. I have absolutely no desire to try the dearer MXR pedal...
I've yet to see a bass phaser, but seen plenty of bass choruses and flangers. Tried a few choruses in the past that make the tone too 'thin' and jangly, but the Analog Chorus doesn't seem to do that.
Thanks for the feedback!

The PQ3B Isnt a true parametric, the bandwidth is fixed for each of the 3 ranges.I prefer the GE7B ovr the PQ3B there is more overall sound shaping ability.
Cool, I ended up getting a GE-7B actually. Works really well after my dirty pedals.

12. Something I hear a lot is that bass-specific pedals are often a waste of time/extra money..
So I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the MXR Analog Chorus and the MXR Bass Chorus Deluxe.

The Analog Chorus is a bit cheaper so I was wondering if it'd make much difference getting one or the other with bass. Will the Analog Chorus suck the low end out?

Any tips or suggestions welcome.

In my experience, Octron really is a great piece of kit and the Oc3 is not, I moved it on fair quickly. I dont know about the OC2. The COG pedal is really neat, the sub octave filter is immense. If you can, check out the COG & OCTRON, both mint pedals.
Yeah they both sound great, only issue for me is that I've shelled out a fair bit on pedals recently and an octave is more of an 'extra' than an essential, which is why I'm leaning more towards say the Organizer, as it can do some more interesting things perhaps.
I'll likely save up a bit and perhaps investing in a nice octave like the Octron/Cog at a later date I think :)

14.
The Organizer has a bit of latency (delay between the dry and effect signal) that you may or may not tolerate, or even see as positive part of the effect - personally I hate that aspect of many digital octavers/pitch shifters.
I figured the 'Lag' control on it allowed you to control that aspect? Demos seem to imply that anyway...
The Organiser is not designed to be a true octave in the sense that it sits right on top of your note, the lag is part of the design, and can be adjusted with the lag control. My opinion of it is that it sounds awesome with lag (if that's the ambient vibe you're going for), and a bit strange with no lag. If you want a conventional octave, don't buy the Organizer :).....but it is awesome.
OC-2 wins everytime for my money, although interested in trying the new iteration of the EBS, plus the COG T-16, octave might change everything ;)

Si
The thing is I'm really not sure what I'm after.. I might get the Organizer for now, as it seems quite multi-functional, and if the Sub isn't quite 'heavy' enough I may look into a OC-2 in the future. Seem to always been some on eBay going for reasonable prices.
