1. I remember a b side of a single (might have been Wall Street shuffle or the dean and I) by 10cc called "Gizmo my way" which I thought was rather good at the time, always wondered what had become of the gizmotron
2. Just got a zoom b3 and have started to experiment a bit with. I've not used a lot of effects before so its all a bit new. I have discovered that I like the compreesor effects on the zoom particularly the 160 Comp. I have had a look at a number of threads on the here and messed around with the settings, but if I'm honest i'm not really sure what i'm doing and its all a bit trial and error (mostly error). Just wondering if anyone could give me a few settings to start of with and any advice on adjusting the various ccompressor settings, thanks
3. The 1024X arrived Thursday so I've had a chance to give it a good try, so here are a few thoughts. It comes with a yamaha gig bag which is pretty good quality, but i'll get a hard case for it just to give it a bit more protection. The bass I've been using up until now is another Yamaha, a BBN4 111, which for what was a cheap Bass has been excellent. Out of the wrapping the first thing that I noticed was the weight, the BBN4 is around 8lb in weight but the 1024X is almost 10lb (4.5KG). The 1024X body is only slightly bigger than the BBN4 so I'm guessing the weight is down to a denser/heavier wood. The neck is 1.6" at the nut and 2.5" at the 21st fret. The neck itself dosen't appear to have any finish on it, it feels like wood that has been finished with 800-1000 grit paper, so very smooth, I.m sure there must be some finish on it but it isn't visible. The necks on both basses are virtually identical so it was almost like I'd played the 1024x for years, which was great no different profile or feel to get used to. A quick tune and it was time to try it out. With the pick up set up it is possible to get a real range of sounds from this bass, everything from a real dense thump to high clear "piano" tones and most things in between. The sustain that it is capable of is definitely in the Nigel Tuffnel league. Fit and finish is excellent, although I must say that next to the much cheaper BBN4 there isn't as much difference as you might expect. I guess that just goes to show that Yamaha take a great deal of care with all their basses, not just the top end models. The difference, though is in the sound and the 1024X is in a higher league. Would I buy it again? yes I would definitely no buyers remorse, and with the build quality and the range of sounds it is capable of producing, I can't see me needing anything else for quite a time
4. I'm the first person to moan when something isn't up to scratch or theres a problem with it, but this post is to say how pleased and impressed i,ve been with Hotcovers. Better start by saying I have no connection with the company other than being a very satisfied customer. I recently bought a Fender Rumble 500 combo and thought I'd try and keep it looking tidy so decided to get a cover made for it. Had a look on here and saw a number of names that were mentioned quite a bit, so I started having a look at the different company Web Sites. I had almost decided which one to go for when I noticed a few threads saying that this particular company were a bit overpriced, they also had a 2-3 week waiting time. A couple of posters had mentioned Hotcovers, so I decided to have a look at their covers. They offered a choice of 2 different materials and had 10mm foam as standard (no paying extra for the foam and their prices included VAT). Price for the cover was £39 + £6.50 p&p, so cheaper than most, so I ordered it late Wednesday evening. Got home from work Thursday and gave them a ring just to check they had the order, and was told that the cover had already been made and was waiting to be picked up by the courier and should be with me the next day. Sure enough 11 o,clock the next morning it was delivered !! Unpacked it and tried it on the combo and it was a perfect fit, snug without being tight. I chose the waterproof 600 denier material (I've had boat covers made out of this type of material, so i know its very strong and tear resistant). and it looks smart but is also practical. Would definitely use again
5. Well I bit the bullet and have ordered a black BB1024X from Yamaha London, in the end I was swayed by the number of positive replies for the 1024 that the thread has produced. Hopefully it should arrive Wedsnesday, I'll try and post some pics and my first thoughts on it. Just like to thank everyone for taking the time to reply
6.
@Ortogo Hi. Don't know where you're based, or whether you've played the 424 and 1024. If it's of any help, you're welcome to pop round and play my 424. I also have a Yamaha BB1200 and a couple of Fender P's for comparison. I'm in Stockport. Many thanks for the kind offer, unfortunately I,m down in Cornwall but its much appreciated all the same. Spoke to Yamaha music London this morning, and they didn't think that the 1024 was going to be discontinued, or they hadn,t heard anything about it being discontinued. They haven,t got any black or white 1024s in stock (they,re expecting some in mid September) but have the other 2 colours in 1024s and have black or white 1024x in stock, I am quite tempted by a black 1024x !!
7.
GAK have the red 424 for £239,or the five string red one at £209....crazy prices!!!!
Wow, that is mad, how can that five string be that price? Someone is going to pick up a bargain. I'm tempted to go for the 424 at that money
8. many thanks for all the replies. I found this link today https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwMloZ_W4-c which compares the 424 and the 1024. I think the 1024 sounds just slightly clearer and more defined in the clip. I play mostly Rock in one form or another so I'm not sure if that is really necessary , but its always easier to "dirty" the sound than try and clean it up Opinion seems to be evenly divided between the 2 basses, which shows that they are fairly evenly matched? I'll make a few phone calls tomorrow and try and find out whether there is any chance that the 1024 is going to be discontinued, (I also noticed that GAK had listed the 1024 as discontinued) and had worried that there was only a small amount of stock left. One niggling point is would I regret not going for the 1024, if it were to be discontinued? Decisions , decisions
9. I'm currently torn between the above 2 basses, the 1024 has slightly better pickups according to a number of threads I've looked at and the 1024 has the splined body construction. I've seen the 1024 for around £570 and the 424 for £270, is the 1024 worth twice as much as the 424?, your thoughts would be much appreciated
