  1. Ped out of interest what was so wholly incompatible about the PMs? Surely the pertinent bits are dates and times, indexed links to the users involved, content - there was no way to massage this into the new format? Just doesn't, on the face of it, seem very difficult. Would love to know the technical bits if you have any time to explain.
  2. I've had a BS2 for a couple of years, it's a great little synth for the price and nice and light and portable for those of us doubling on synth and bass guitar. Really easy to use too. I wish it had a three octave keyboard though, I don't know why everything's got two octaves now, v. irritating.
  3. I only played fretless for 6-7 years but I haven't owned one for over ten years. I feel like I'm letting the side down now. :/ Never played a Paul Young cover. Oh actually I had a fretless Stingray a few years back but shifted it quite quickly - never got on with Stingrays. Didn't sound that great either.

  6. Incidentally you are all fools for not taking the Shaker Mini. It's great for doing modwheel-style wobbles like Bernie Worrell. You can set it up so the footswitch is momentary, and just wibbles the pitch when you're stepping on it, and you can set the speed you want to be whatever is max or min on the knob using the toneprint software so you never lose your sweet spot. Awesome funk bass effect in a tiny box.

  9. I play bass, sequence bass, sing harmony, write songs along with our guitarist/singer, do some mixing and production, bit of keys, etc. Sometimes guitar when we're recording. We don't have very defined roles especially when recording - sometimes our guitarist will track bass guitar, sometimes I'll track guitar, we both get together to do the programming and automation usually, it's all quite relaxed. Live though I'm bass, synths (again mostly bass) and harmony vox.
  10. Lol. Tribute bands. Anyway, be nice to the sound guys and they'll be nice to you. I remember one venue we used to play regularly the guy on the desk was practically like an extra band member, playing with delays on the vox and drums for us and really doing a number on it, great guy. First time he did that the headline was Neville Staple and he clearly had no time for him!

[/quote] I work in software development and we had a little poll around the office a few weeks back and it turned out the most common degree subject was music. There are only two guys with computer science degrees - the two youngest guys - but five people have music degrees. I'm the only developer there who doesn't have a degree. The one guy who has the same specialisms as me has a bachelors in maths and an engineering masters, and is always grumbling about how long he spent in education to end up doing the same job as me with my 4 GCSEs...

  14. No. I do sometimes accidentally steal bass parts - I accidentally played something very like Ashes To Ashes recently, had to bin that. What sucks is when something like that gets stuck in your head and it's hard to move on and play something different!
  15. To me it's all just backline. If I can hear myself and it's not a pain to load in, it's all bisto. Who knows what it sounds like out front but it won't sound like your favourite cab that's for sure.

I'd agree Zender had a really nice approach on that early Jamiroquai stuff, really understated souly playing like on Blow Your Mind, really busy but integrated on If I Like It I Do It, he was obviously just brimming with confidence and feeling it. Did he ever do anything else after he quit Jamiroquai though? Seems odd that he effectively disappeared.
  17. Got one of these, they're great. Simple enough to get good bass sounds out of but with enough features to do nutty stuff too, and the patch memory makes it more useful live than similar offerings from Arturia for example. More storage than the cheaper Moogs too!
  18. I have two Js and a P. One J is strung with flats and only used for recording currently. I would usually gig the J first - I've got it wired in series and it sounds massive - but it needs a broken solder joint fixing and I haven't got around to it so I'm gigging the P. Really though I don't care that much either way.
  19. I don't listen to music I don't like because the bass player is good. I am drawn to good music where the bass part is also good, though.
  20. I haven't really chopped and changed that much. My first decent rig was an SVTIII into an Ampeg 2x15, I replaced that because I moved continents and it wasn't practical to take it with me, ended up with a Hartke head and a SWR 410 which was fine for ages. Replaced the Hartke (HA) with an LH500 for a bit, then finally went lightweight with what I've got now; a GB head and a Schroeder 2x12. I would swap out the Schroeder for a Barefaced cab ideally, but the Schroeder has been really good backline and I haven't had any issues with the sound. The GB head is fine but a couple of the pots are noisy so I should get it serviced really. Never bothered...

I felt that you were suggesting my own bad experience was down to not owning the most expensive brand of audio interface, but then gradually conceded it wasn't working for you either, hence my terse reply.
  24. Funnily enough I've got both a BSII and a Gaia. Don't get the Gaia, the BSII is a great little synth though. Regarding doing it with pedals: You can certainly get sounds that would fool anyone into thinking they were hearing a synth - listening back to some rehearsal recordings I couldn't tell if what *I* was playing was bass guitar or synth - but there's a lot you can't do that a synth can, for example reliably triggering what sounds like an ADSR envelope is basically impossible especially when playing quickly. It's also difficult to ape an arpeggiator. There are just some things that you need a keyboard for.
  25. She's got such a killer feel, it's really infectious, amazing bass player and that's only part of what she does. I remember when Plantation Lullabies came out it was just... OOF!
