If the bass player in a band does what is required of a bass player in that band, he is doing a great job. So what if he plays root notes or basic patterns. If it works for the band, it works.

'Life's been good' by Joe Walsh/The Eagles. Brilliant intro but terrible voice quality. The Eagles ought to have assigned the vocals to someone else in the band. I disagree with the negative comments about SCOM. This is and remains one of the all time great rock songs. I am not keen on the guitar solo near the song ending though. The Stone Roses had a well known song that had a great intro but awful lyrics, both content wise and tonally. I can't remember the song title......[Edit] it is 'Love Spreads'

It would be piano for me. As a child I played accordion, penny whistle, piccolo, mouth organ, then graduated onto guitar [which I still play] and ultimately bass. However I should have taken up piano well over 25 years ago. Wonderful instrument - even simple major or minor chords sound fantastic on a piano.

I have played guitar on and off for around fifty years and additionally bass for the last three of four but: I absolutely hate so called 'guitar music'. Van Halen, Vai, Satch etc. etc. etc. Total sh1te. Noise. Technique for technique sake. That is my #1 #2 every song by the late Eva Cassidy #3 modern female vocalists. I have yet to hear one who can actually sing. Screech yes but sing? Well actually there is on, Mel C on the Bryan Adams song 'When you're gone'. One swallow does not make a Summer........

Great that Suzi is still rockin out but that exhibition of nonsense on the video does nothing for her reputation. IMHO stick to what works. That 'playing' reminds me of young lads (who don't know any better) showing off in a music shop. And the drummer always leads the band, not the bass player......

We have a Yamaha sound bar, bought from Cloney Audio around ten years ago. It performs very well and something I have no hesitation in recommending.

The bass player at the Dublin gig was sensational. Played almost nothing but roots but he played for the songs and got everything right. And he sat on his stool most of the time. He showed that less is most definitely more.

Rory Gallagher. I don't think there is anybody on the planet who could squeeze so much music out of a guitar. R.I.P. A few years ago my wife and I visited Rory's grave in Cork. That day I made a vow to return and bring a guitar: to play something for Rory. And as we left the graveyard, we met four bikers in leathers. They had traveled from Germany. I watched them discreetly and they made a bee line for Rory's grave. Rory did that to people, he inspired them. What a player.

If my post got you thinking about what is music to you, then I can take all the hullabaloo thrown at me. Musically I was brought up on trad Irish and Country. I have broadened my listening in the intervening years but I like my music to have clearly defined structure, verse, chorus, bridge etc. A track that goes nowhere irritates me, like so called chill out music. YMMV.

I listened and waited for the music to start and it never started! Self indulgent noodling, that is kinda typical of a lot of bass & guitar 'playing'. He is not the first and probably won't be the last to engage in playing nonsense, from observation that stuff and style of music impresses young males. Males who are easily impressed by bass played at the dusty end of the fretboard.

As a relative novice in bass playing, the only thing I would question is his # on strings. I prefer a traditional dull thud Precision sound rather than the brighter more modern Jazz bass sound. Less toppy, in fact no top at all. This happens naturally when strings get older and more used. I am debating with myself on whether or not to get a set of flats for my Precision. It is a bit like deciding to buy the latest driver in the golf shop. It might give me a few extra metres off the tee or it may be less controllable than the well used stick I have in the bag. Do I gamble on the new or stick to what more or less works sort of OK. Strings are a lot less expensive than golf drivers but the decision is the same. Other than that I found that Scott made a lot of sense. His presentation may be aimed more at beginners like me than seasoned pros. And if so, that is fine.

All the biggest 'modern day' music genres originated in the US - Blues, Jazz, Crooners, Rock & Roll, Country, Funk, Disco, Grunge etc., so the US is where it is happening. The U.K.including Ireland punch way above their weight musically speaking but the US is way ahead of us.

Like most people, I was sorry to hear of the death of Eva Cassidy but her cover of Fields of Gold absolutely murders a lovely song. Her singing style reminded me of Joan Sutherland. More vocal gymnastics than singing. And about as interesting to listen to as gymnastics! But as the OP asked a question about covers, try Tulsa Time by Eric Clapton. The original by Don Williams is a fine rendition of his song but I think that Clapton's take on it is better. Not much in it to be honest.

I downloaded the Lite version of this app and discovered that it only works with Hal Leonard instruction CDs. Not surprising really but I wonder if the paid for version will work with FLAC files stored on my computer system? If it does, I will probably get it as it looks a very good bit of software. I have Audicity downloaded but it is a complex app that is way too much for what I need. ASD fits the bill perfectly if it can play FLAC files. Replies appreciated, thanks.
