1.
Jack Ellis in Cheatham Hill, Manchester is spot on
+1 for Jack and the guys.
2.
Summer of 69. It was on our set list for quite a while early on and then removed as we were all fed up to the back teeth with it. But, people like it and always sing along. And if the Foo Fighters can cover it at one of their gigs then who am I to argue...
Don't you just hate this one!
3. Just put a set of Rotosound Swing 66's on my Musicman Sterling Ray 34 bass having previously adorned it with D'adarrio. Whilst bringing the D string up to the correct tension it snapped about an inch from the ferrule! No issues with the other 3 strings, all in tune. Contact Rotosound UK http://www.rotosound.com and spoke with their customer service to explain my dilemma, and the guy on the end of the phone turns out to be very understanding, apologices for the breakage and immediately sends out a replacement D string (first class) at no cost to myself. If nothing else Rotosound deserves a mention on this and similar forums for excellent customer service.
4. Heatwave - Martha and the Vandellas What becomes of the broken hearted - Jimmy Ruffin I can't help myself - four tops Bernadette - four tops I heard it thru the grapevine - Marvin Gaye
5. My 2005 Fender Deluxe Active Jazz 24 (Made in Korea)
6.
Funnily enough my bass in s with Jack at mo. I only asked to see if there was one in Bolton coz I'm lazy
I travel 20 miles to take my basses to Jack, he's worth the travel.
7. You'd be hard pushed to find a better luthier than Jack, the guy is top notch and what he doesn't know is not worth knowing. He has done great setups and more to all my basses and I would thoroughly recommend him (and Tom). http://www.jacksinstrumentservices.com/index.html
8.
Are you in a band? If not join one now!
That's easier said than done, I've been playing bass for coming up to a year and really enjoy it. But trying to find like minded individuals who are at the same level as myself and who enjoy the same music as myself (Motown, etc) and who would like to get together for a jam etc is nigh on impossible. I joined "Join My Band" in a hope of getting together with other musicians but if you're not already a well established bassist with a minimum of 20 years experience and a back catalogue of every genre of rock (plus must be aged 18 - 23) then you'll be very fortunate to find anyone.
9. There was a bass player at Motown at the time called Ron Brown who used to turn up with loads of hand written riffs, grooves and licks, it's a possibility it may be him.
10. Don't know if this will help! http://www.bigbasstabs.com/new_order_bass_tabs/regret.html
11.
Very nice sir, you'll have to let us know how it plays.
I have to be honest, it plays great! The neck is neither too fat nor skinny as say a fender jazz neck. I have not found it too heavy to wear but again that's a personal thing and the range of tones available is amazing. Having a Fender Deluxe Active jazz bass (which too can be dialled in for a variety of tones) the sound of this is like no other! It can be bright and clean or growly and low. The Zero Mod thumb rest is in the perfect position for my hand, the action is just right for me and I'm finding it difficult to put down 😀 why did I wait so long before getting one of these!
12. Bought this today, 6 months old, Bartolini pup upgrade with a Zero Mod thumb rest and D'adarrio strings - £300 cash! Opinions? 13. Hi guys, despite all my efforts I can't find bass tab notation for The Snake by Al Wilson. Anyone help please?
14. Canned Heat - Jamiroquai (Stuart Zender on bass)
15. Can I recommend Jack and the guys at http://www.jacksinstrumentservices.com, did a top job on my bass (advanced setup, restrung and sorted an earthing issue). Based at Cheetham Hill, Manchester.
Hey Lloyd, I picked up bass last year at 52 and am doing the Rockschool music grades with a tutor. Yup, I will never be a world class player, but boy am I having fun. What us more mature people may lack in learning speed and agility is made up with doggedness to get it right! Never too late to start, unless you want to play in boy band without looking like the over friendly uncle!
Newbie!

Hi everyone, a brief introduction - I'm 53 years old with absolutely no musical experience (although I did play the violin once in junior school!) who has realised a life long ambition to learn to play the bass guitar. I am aware my age is against me but I have plenty of enthusiasm and a desire to learn, and have gauged my expectations accordingly. I was fortunate enough to buy a used studio Squire Fender Deluxe 4 Jazz Bass from Danny Fox in Sheffield (Bassman Danny Fox) as Jazz/funk is the road I want to travel down, and have found an excellent tutor to help me achieve my goals. I look forward to interacting with you guys thru this excellent site and will no doubt be pestering you all for help and advice
