I'm thinking it would be fun to start a band as a side project consisting of the classic four-piece lineup of drums/bass/guitar/vocals playing 70's punk style versions of 70s disco songs - is this a genius idea or a daft idea?

No idea if it's daft or genius but I'd pay hard-earned cash to attend every one of your gigs especially if you do One Nation Under a Groove and It's Raining Men.

You might google 'qsc protect mode 4'. I've got a thread on TB, but it's bitten a few people. Free fix if you get it before hand, otherwise you're shipping a speaker to qsc in Buckinghamshire at your own cost then waiting weeks.

Ahhh, cheers @Jack, that was the problem I was thinking of, I obviously read about it as it was just starting to be talked about and people were panicking.

Stuck record alert: update the firmware!

Hmmmm, I read something, somewhere that the firmware sometimes bricked the speakers, it was later iterations than mine, which is why I have updated mine. I'll try and find the source of this.

I was going to start a new thread, but this seems like the best place for my FRFR question.

So, I just purchased a QSC K10.2 to use with my Quad Cortex with the intention of going fully ampless.

I played at a small session with the QSC and found that it was really boomy despite setting a HPF on the QC. In hindsight I think that the problem was I accidentally left the the speaker in 'Bass Amp' mode from when I was trying it out at home and did not turn off the cab on the QC. But it raised the question: what setting do other QSC players use out there when they are using it as an FRFR set up?

    Thanks!

I have the QSC K12.2 and the guitarist in my duo has the K10.2, we both use the default setting.

Really interesting thread and a lot of info to wade through. At my last gig I borrowed a Yamaha DXR10, and ran my HX stomp and pedalboard through it and had a general mix of the band also, and no backline. This is the first time I'd ever tried running without backline and enjoyed the experience, although not sure DXR10 had enough bass response for my liking, so will look into a DXR12 or QSC 10.2 or 12.2. Just wondered if anyone else is using an FRFR for the same purpose of monitoring bass and rest of band? Most of our gigs these days PA is provided and our guitarist is running a Kemper with DXR10, so not overly loud on stage.

Thanks to this thread I now run...

    Bass > Grace Design Alix > Effectrode PC-2A Compressor > QSC K12.2

...if there is PA support I use the QSC as a monitor and run a line out of it to the desk or if there's no PA I just use it as backline. I used to go...

    Bass > HX Stomp > QSC K12.2

    ...also a great option.

Is this unrealistic or am I just being lazy??

I realise the HX Stomp has much more than you need but it is a very good option that'll do exactly what you are after and there is also huge potential in it should you need it in the future. I had 'scenes' for each song that I simply moved through as per the set. I used a fraction of it's spec, slight variations in EQ, and amp models, very subtle effects here and there. What I'm saying is don't rule it out because it can do loads of things you don't currently need when it will do exactly what you want now extremely well. Also it is great fun to just muck about with and you have lots of users/experts on here who are willing to help out when/if you get stuck with something.

I’m after something simple, warm and with a sense of quality about the tone/build. If I have a gazillion knobs to twiddle, I’ll get overwhelmed and won’t get the most out of the pedal.

That sounds like a pretty close description of the PC-2A!

This is interesting. A "mellow warmth" is definitely what I'm going for here. And that's a generous offer. I'm in Retford, north Nottinghamshire.

Yes, very organic and round. It was a compressor that @Osiris suggested as he is familiar with our music and it was a perfect recommendation.

Effectrode PC-2A (which has valves in, I believe)

    Firstly, paging @Osiris

Secondly I have the Effectrode PC-2A. I play semi-hollow short scale basses in an acoustic duo and the mellow warmth of the PC-2A is second to none, lovely.

Where are you @bassjamm? You are welcome to try it out any time.

    Thank you, kind sir.

    I was hoping for narrower.

Maybe I'll have to give in and try one of the Nordy ones. I think they are 17mm at the bridge.

I have tried out the Gretsch short scales and they are way heavier than they look. I had a Nordstrand Acinonyx and I was concerned about just how narrow the string spacing was but it played beautifully and was comfortable and stupidly light. I regret selling mine on and am seriously contemplating getting another.
