  2. NBD.

A couple of years ago while playing with friends on quite a regular basis pub gigs functions etc I managed to find a lovely Pbass it was a mid 80s black with a rosewood board. I threw on my favorite strings a black scratchplate and dispite me usually preferring a narrow nut width it became the go to gigging bass.

The usual story then followed the band stopped playing I moved away and I sold the bass as it wasnt getting used. Now I am a bit of a Ad trawler even if I'm not looking to buy or have no need to I seem to spend free moments clicking through ebay reverb and of course the Basschat sales when I spotted an Ad for a Pbass! A few messages to the seller and a deal was struck.

Now it's not the old bass I sold but it's as close as I have seen for a long time as these dont seem to come up very often and to top it off it's a YOB for me being a 1983.

It's in great condition for 37years old with a few small Mark's better than me neck is lovely I would discrible it as shallow and wide (it's going to take a bit of getting used to again but I can see why I moved it to number 1 back in the day)

I'm waiting for strings to turn up and I have not had chance to get the amp fired up but I'm really pleased.

On another note I put a black scratchplate on like I had on the old bass but it's not the best of fits at the neck joint and not the correct pattern (13hole) if anyone can point me in the direction of a 15hole plate as all I can see are 13 or 10hole in the usual places.

First pic is me with the inspiration

    Second from the Ad

3rd is the new bass with me.

  3. I'm not a 6string player but I think it looks good for a bongo which always look better in dark colours to me. The EQ looks very interesting with controls it makes sense in a set and forget way find the sound that suits the song/venue and playing style! Guess it's another take on a tonestyler idea and if your not happy I bet they have trim pots in the cavity etc.

Fingerboard doesnt bother me at all either as I dont find it stands out

A beautiful bass! I have an identical one, also from 1983, and this is an often overlooked era in which Fender produced very nice instruments, very well finished and with a great sound. Mine is also 3.8 kg. light and well balanced.
Too often the instruments born out of the 1983-84 production (the popular Dan Smith era) are confused with the late 70's ones which had heavy bodies and didn't always show an accurate quality control level.
    GLWS!

Had an 80s P like this really regret getting rid of it (it's even in my tumbnail) tempting...

  5. This is one of those can of worms topics I think you could have two of the same bass made on the same day in the same factory with the same basic parts and they sound and feel totally different. You can use pickup type/placement as a general guide know the rough characteristics you prefer then try as many instruments that you think will fit the sound you are looking for till you find the one that stands out.

Hindsight is real git at times I wished I kept basses I have moved on that I felt didn't fit the bill at the time but really they were more tan the sum of their parts and sounded great each style has its place be it single/split/bucke/ active or passive just find a bass you gel with and play it as much as you can.
