    And…?

    I'm digging it!

Still trying to find the right balance between the grit switch and the saturation from my jptr fx Jive, but the Jive might end up going the distance anyways...

I tend to heavily boost the bass and tune with the focus, roll the treble right back (the treble roll off is fantastically tuned, even at 9 o clock the sound isn't muddy at all). Grit on and low, and scoop off.

Lack of aux in is every bit the gripe I thought it would be, but other than that I'm getting a filthy P sound with this, the jive and a snide cali76 without overly colouring my other effects 👌

Nice but think i would have left the old bridge pick up in place but not connected rather than a hole.

Never realised the J pick up was so close to the P on them.

    Dave

I thought about it, but I like the battered and full of character aesthetic, and think the hole adds to it... the old pick up would've added a nice contrast though being black...

It's a bit of an odd design choice as it creates the mightiest of mid scoops - and as mentioned by others, the P loses a lot of depth as opposed to the Fender counterparts.

The bass feels like home though and I when I pick it up the qualms with tone go out of my head as nothing plays quite like it.

  3. So my 2017 Sandberg Cali II VT4 HCA got some new pick ups yesterday! Went with the EMG GZR set. Their push fit set up is something else!

Decided to go all passive, as I'm not a fan of on board preamps, and have enough tone shaping on my board.

Also binned off the bridge pickup, I don't like how close it is to the neck pick up, so it never gets used... so away it went!

cant wait to give this a proper blast!

  4. I don't notice any neck dive with my squier classic vibe mustang, although my strap is an old leather strap with a felt style material underneath.

For reference, I'm 6ft 2" tall - 4ft wide, and my main basses are the squier, a Sandberg Cali II VT4HCA and a sire V5R jazz.

For me I found the switch from long scale to short a lot easier than going from short back to my long scale. Pros and cons as follows:

    Pros:

    - Lighter

    - More comfortable when playing 1 finger per fret

    - Less hand, wrist and elbow fatigue

    - Lower string tension

    - Has more "Thud" in the mix

    Cons:

    - My C4 doesn't track as well with this bass

    - Harder to get a "growl" from (could be the squier pick ups)

    - Easy to forget you've got less frets when noodling up the dusty end

I'll say that my VT4 is my ride or die (sold it once and was SO glad to have it back) - but the squier sees more gigging action these days

Just looking at buying my first wireless system and the Shure Glxd16 seems to be the best option and worth the price.

Does anyone has had any experience with the new NUX B8 system. It seems to have some good features at a lower price than the shure, like the tuner receiver.

    https://www.nuxaudio.com/b8.html

I'm always scared with 2.4ghz set ups for interference, but I've had 2 sets of the NUX bugs as well as a preamp from them and can't recommend enough. Quality gear at a good price

Why does my EHX fuzz pedal have an awful hiss when I use it, if I place my hand on the case of the pedal it stops

    Thanks in advance

Sounds like an earthing issue somewhere in your chain... could be the pedal, PSU, what you're plugging the PSU into, your bass or your cable.

Unfortunately distortions (and compressors) can amplify this hum - it may still be there at low volume when the pedal is off.

I have a similar issue if I plug my laptop charger into the wall when I'm using my pedalboard + headphones at home

  7. Board edition #1246442

    20240308_203649.thumb.jpg.b597d6874dd013d031d794025e2fdfeb.jpg

Replaced the previously posted markbass with an Ampeg SGT-DI, which was then replaced with a laney digbeth, which was then replaced with a Source Audio Zio Bass - brilliantly simple but effective bit of kit!

Added a naughty knock off demonfx Call76, I've had the real deal before and it was fantastic, but too extravagant for me. The Demonfx unit is neigh on indistinguishable (so long as I don't look at it or touch it; this is without A/Bing).

Mojomojo and Monomyth bought at the same time with the intentions of keeping one, but love what they both do so kept both - Monomyth doesn't usually get used, and the mojomojo maybe for 5 minutes of the set, but they sound great!

Board replaced with a Gator aluminium board, which is fantastic value at less than £70 including high quality soft case.

  8. So yesterday I caved and ordered the last one of these in stock at Andertons.  Figured if it's better than my Digbeth I'll sell the Digbeth and JPTR FX Jive to cover most of the damage.

Was massively excited for it to arrive today, only to receive the dreaded DPD "Sorry, your Andertons parcel is delayed due to unexpected issue" text 😔.

Looks like my field report will be put back a week...

The lack of mid control didn’t bother me. The Fliptop also only has bass and treble, as does my Sadowsky pre. For reference I play a P with Labella flats. My other has Chromes on but I haven’t used that through it.

As to how it made the sound better, fattened it up nicely. Puts a bit more bottom into the low-mid-forward P sound.

Transparent vs sweeten? Not sure if I can tell the difference. It obviously changes the sound but my bass still sounds like my bass.

This was coming directly off the preamp into headphones.

Can’t spill the beans about the new thing, I’m afraid, NDA and all that. It is as adventurous as stuff like C4 and Ultrawave. It does some very neat things and nicely addresses some things people have been asking for. I think it’ll go down well. I’ve already made some nice presets today and have thought of a few feature ideas that I’ve fed back.

Oh Wow!  Didn't expect you to answer EVERY question, thought I was pushing my luck!  That's awesome, thanks!

I'm half way between having a THIRD shot at an HX stomp, or giving the Zio a go... I know they do VERY different things, but £250 feels a lot for 4 knobs, 2 switches and a DI with no aux in.  That being said, I really like the look of what it DOES do, and I think it'll be more direct sounding than my Laney Digbeth pre.

With regards to the new thing... you tease! I have no doubt SA will hit it out of the park again... can you say if it replaces the C4 and Ultrawave, or is it run in tandem alongside them as they do with each other?

Well I got this yesterday evening and it’s really very nice indeed. Not sure it’s going to replace my Fliptop as it’s a bit cleaner sounding than that. Definitely makes my bass sound way better and the grit has a very nice quality to it.

Oh, and the new thing. 🤯 It’s brilliant!

    I'm made of questions!

How did you find the 2 band eq, any issue with mids?

In what way did it make you sound way better?

Is it majorly transparent, or does it sweeten?

Was this to your amp or through phones?

Oh, and what's the new thing? 😁

  11. Any of these out in the wild in the UK? Clamming to see people's thoughts! I keep telling myself I'm happy with my set up, but "if I just sell this, this and that I can buy a ZIO bass pre" keeps being a thing 😬

They've received a good reception on Talkbass, but I always take over there with a pinch of salt...

  12. I've had everything from Rickenbackers, Jap precisions, Spector, EBMM sterling, Workshop Ibanez, and currently still in possession of a Sandberg California II HCA bass...

Despite all this I'm currently gigging a Squier classic vibe Mustang with the Sandy and a Site V5R for backup and I've never been happier.  The Squier neck doesn't feel any less playable than the plek'd sandy neck, and the sire neck is unbelievable!

On the flip side of this, I also have a Harley Benton M4SBK (I think), and that came with unusable tuners (not just poor stability, actually wouldn't turn) as well as a lot of nasty sharp fret edges.

I do think that there's a psychological thing where you FEEL more professional playing high end gear, but in reality - No one knows, no one cares, and the difference in price is rarely justified.

    Thanks.

MIDI control is not what these collaborations are about. One can always put it in a MIDI loop switcher. What I think folks might see as missing is the lack of footswitch capability for the “grit” and “scoop” controls.

Ah sorry man, I meant mid as in EQ (midi has never floated my boat anyway haha)... it seems to have bass and treble controls with a scoop option, but nothing for finer control of the mids... I agree with the footswitch options though, certainly for grit. Although I the BTW video makes it sound like it's expected to be an always on option. 🤔

Yay! SA are sending me one of these soon with some other exciting new stuff!

@thisisswanbon do you fancy amending your thread title to accurately reflect the name of the pedal so that it will be able to be found more easily using the search function?

    Good shout, and done!

That's incredibly exciting for you, congrats!  Let us know your thoughts! (Personally, I'm especially interested in whether a mid control would've been useful!)

I’ve got a pair of BB604 basses which are incredible considering the two together cost only £500. Do they sound great? Absolutely.

Do they give me a really good P bass sound? No. That’s what I use my P bass (or my Mustang) for.

So depending on what you want, it might suit you better than a P, but if you’re after specifically a P bass sound, you should look at a P bass really.

Those BB604 basses are great!  I bought one new back in 2005, it was actually more playable than a euro spector they had in.  I always thought the neck felt REALLY long on it though, ended up selling for buttons years later 😔

  16. Of all the basses I've had and moved on my BB734A is one of 2 that I regret...

Fantastic bass with a fantastic plethora of sounds available.  Slightly heavy, but that translated to the tone.  Comments about the matt finish are valid, it will gloss quickly.  If I could buy mine back, I'd do it in a heart beat.

I've always wanted that 60s / early 70s bass sound which is compressed but still fat, a little broken or overdriven but kind of organically so. Like the limitations of character of the older equipment made it rather than through effects.

    This has got me close

Awesome! pretty good explanation to be honest  Do you not find any low end or "weight" lost when it's on?

Just sound checked on a rather nice sized stage.

The JPTR sounds righteous. The missing link in my sound. Top diode engaged, compressor before it, gain about 11 o'clock.

    Gorgeous.

I can't decide whether I prefer mine on or off!  One minute it's an always on sweetener, the next I'm using it as an occasional drive.  What do you feel it adds, Stew?  Seeing someone else say what I think I hear may help sway me either way!

With the Ampeg brand now owned by Yamaha who also own Line 6, is the SGT-DI just repackaged Line 6 technology using HX modelling?  With that in mind, would I be better off purchasing a used HX Stomp as a more versatile device?

Not quite... the SGT DI is an analogue preamp, and in honesty it does a much better job of both the SVT and B15 than the HX stuff... the pre loaded cab sims also sounded better than anything I conjured up with stock cabs on the hx.

That being said, the brief time I had the SGT I used it without cab sims as they ruined my synth effects (not a fault of the pedal, they just weren't programmed to use with cabs)

Yes, but didn’t directly hear about it from SA as it’s not something that requires beta testing.

If you’re google-savvy, you can find it on their site. I shan’t post directly.

Guess I'm not savvy enough, as all I can find is the Zio 😔
