1. Used to have the same problem, here with the same symptoms. Your hands need protecting. I use a really good pair of gloves - Thinsulate lined, Goretex waterproofing and leather outer shell for toughness. Keep my hands warm and protected from the elements all day and leave them like Nanette Newmans' after she's been doing the washing up. Cost a bomb, but work pays for them.

  2.
I think i didn't explain right. My cab is 8ohm and the amp is running 4ohms per channel. I use it in one channel without concern becouse i know it's safe to do it.
This bit is back to front. you cant 'set' the impedance on your amp. if you plug an 8 ohm cab into an amp it will see 8 ohms, whether running mono or bridged. the impedance rating on the amp is there as a warning, i.e. in your case "don't plug a cab (or combination) with total impedance less than 4 ohms per channel otherwise the amp may melt" Generally the rule of thumb is less impedance = more volume, but stay at or above the amps rating.

  3.
If it's for noodling on in work I'd get something a little less bulky than an "acoustic". Like a Violin bass or an Ibanez artcore.
This. Or get something small and portable (I'm thinking of the steinberger-a-likes), add one of those VOX headphone amps for potential perfect portable noodling experience.

Since getting an acoustic. it's been gathering dust for 2 years. I got it for acoustic jamming after the pub, but guitar's easier than bass when you're drunk :)

  4. Back in the days when I first picked up a bass I tried all sorts - super glue, vinegar, and yes even piss, to strengthen the finger tips. None seemed to work and I was forever getting blisters and blood on the fretboard. The trick that worked for me was playing lots. That gave me nice hard tips and I haven't had any problems for the last umpteen years. As an added bonus my hands don't smell like a tramps. :)

  5.
you'll most definitely need a preamp with that.
not necessarily.

using exactly the same things I made a pickup for a broomstick/washtub bass. Plugged straight into the combo and it works fine, although it can be a little sensitive to high frequency noise - it picks up every knock, but a low pass filter will sort this out - I use a behringer guitar graphic eq pedal.

  6. I obviously knew what to expect when I opened this post from reading the spoiler.

I noticed on the status line that the link was to the choob, not the bay, and that the apparent link was a decoy.

Can someone please explain to me why I clicked on it?

    :):D:D:D:D

  7.
I just register this bass 4 days ago, I've set it up with new strings, truss rod adjustment, string hieght and all I have left to do is the intonation, it's not out by miles but it's annoying knowing that everything after the 12th fret is sharpe!

All the Allen keys in my cruztools set don't fit the key holes.
5/32 is slightly too big and 1/8 is definatly too small!!

So what to do, there doesn't seem to be an in-between, I've tried all the Allen keys in the house and I can't even find metric ones to fit.

I can do the intonation easy so I'm not taking it to get done, I just need the correct Allen key size or an alternative.

I've tried searching google and EBMM website but no info anywhere at all.
5/32 is 4.05 mm
    1/8 is 3.25 mm

I think you need a 4 mm allen key - Any half decent hardware store will have some

Edited to remove unnecessary sarcasm. :)

  8.
I can't see where I've asked once for extra policies to be put into place or for anyone to change their current behaviour on the board for my personal benefit...? I've raised the topic for discussion and asked people to post their opinions on such images as well as clarification of the forum policy with regards to said images, bearing in mind their already stated policy that posts deemed to be sexist may be deleted.

The alternative browsing solutions suggested are ok but not ideal for the reasons that have been outlined previously in the thread, ie it's great to be able to identify users from their avatar etc...
OK, glad thats cleared up. Apologies, but obviously I read an implied demand as such from your posts. Re-reading them objectively shows this not to be the case. *blush*

  9.
Some replies have missed the point a bit, but thanks for the input anyway. I wasn't trying to start an argument or provoke emotive responses, just a discussion about what people consider to be appropriate or inappropriate for a music forum. I get the impression that the majority are cool with it though?

I know some people find it difficult to grasp, but my job does involve waiting around for processes to finish, during which time it's considered acceptable to take a break, read a book/paper or just browse the net - my boss and I even send each other links to stuff. When you're paying me you can tell me not to browse Bass Chat whilst at work, otherwise I can't see how the opinion that I shouldn't browse the internet at work anyway is at all relivant. The content I browse, however, may be becoming inappropriate...
That's cool, I wasn't trying to imply that my experience was the same as yours, just that I didn't think it reasonable to ask that the wording of the site should be changed for my benefit. The fact that browsing at work is allowed for you doesn't change that you are asking everyone else to submit to a form of extra policing of the forum for your benefit.

I think people may be getting a little worked up that a few alternatives have been given, namely the orrible lofi version or the turning off of avatars (which would seem ideal) but you seem to not want to consider these, or at least not comment on them. I think they are a reasonable compromise. Unless you can give a reason why they are unsuitable for you then there is the danger of appearing selfish and the responses will increasingly become variations on the lines of "tough titty" *insert shrug here*

  10. I think this is being taken too far.

You are at work, OK you have a problem with the possibility of co-workers seeing NSFW images, I understand that, but a safe for work alternative has already been given. Do we really want to moderate this forum to make the whole site safe for work?

I was once pulled by the IT bods because I was browsing the 'Gear Porn' and this obviously triggered all sorts of alarm bells all the time. I wish it had a nicer name to stop it being a problem, but it is not fair to ask that it should be changed just to protect me from doing something that I shouldn't have been doing in the first place.

I vote for leaving the site it as is. There is a 'lofi' solution to your problem If you don't want to use it then you must accept the consequences.

  11.
For the ultimate in stealth browsing, use http://basschat.co.uk/lofiversion/ :).
Hey thats great! perfect for work and super fast for mobile browsing with slow connections.

There's probably a big link on the site index that I haven't noticed in the last 2 years isn't there.

  12.
Ah, hold yer horses
+1. It may be as simple as a defective string. Its not that uncommon. If padding hasn't helped then chances are the problem is not in the nut.

local guitar shop for a check over sounds like a safe bet to me. Be friendly and ham up the newbe angle and you might get a free check. :)

  13.

God I hate that track!. The tone of the keys in the intro puts me in mind of 20 cats playing kazoos not quite in unison. Its the audio equivalent of nails running down the blackboard and spiders crawling up your legs multiplied a million times.

    [/tangental rambling]

  14.
Guess what, it's probably cheaper to own your own, and help the author feed his family. You can get it for only £2.78
Plus, the publishers are less likely to commission other bass player books when they see what a bunch of skinflints you all are..

    :)
I have to say Mr P sir that we are not all skinflints and indeed many of us have purchased said book and found it to be definitely worth the cost of a pint. However I also should say that I wouldn't have bought it if this waiting list wasn't so long  . I don't intend to defend this book share thing, I just wanted to bolster my ego a bit by talking to you albeit in the virtual entity that is BC.

Have you thought of doing another? "The bits of my life that got left out of the first one" perchance?

    Regards from Norway.

  15.
Thanks guys, i guess it's possible but not advisable :)
I recently played through a Peavey Tour 700 in a shop and it was awesome, and i guess not a bad price £400.
The rehersal room has a Behringer bx4500 which after about an hour of tinkering sounded ok so could be a cheap option?

    cheers

    Spacehog
I use the BX4500 most of the time. Its only really suitable for small rooms and stage monitoring, your sound will quickly get drowned out by the rest of the band if you don't also have PA support, even in an average pub (450W? Marketing bollocks I'm afraid. Its more like 200W). Given the power requirement opinions on downtuning/metal above (which I have no experience of I'd have to say) I'd seriously doubt that it will handle your needs. Plus it sounds cack without a decent preamp. You WILL be regretting buying one it on your first gig. (unless you start playing slow blues at jukebox levels in small pubs )

  16.
If you're playing metal and downtuning then it's not uncommon to ask for 1000 Watts from your amp to handle the lows...
Bloody hell!. Dont mind me I'm just a grumpy git who hates having to leave his local with bleeding ears coz some muppets are using a PA more suitable for a large warehouse. :)

  17. When the band roll out a 4kw+ rig for a tiny back room pub gig, and proceed to rattle the windows at soundcheck, its generally time for me to leave. Once in the Vic in Saltburn the band thought they were playing to an empty pub, when really there were about a hundred people sat in the bar enjoying the music with the door shut.

  18.
Listing pulled. Out of interest what was it?
Some nasty looking lump of wood and metal - looked like it was painted black with hammerite smooth and with 'Fender' written on the headstock in silver paint.

Must have been the contender for the worst counterfeit Fender ever.

  19.
Audacity!

It can also change the pitch for you, and lots of other things.
I've been using audacity on the mac for ages, yet never known there was a time stretch tool. :)

Edit: Hmmm I prefer being able to change the tempo on the fly without having to re-render the song every time. Still, thanks for the heads up.
