  1. I'd be grateful for any recommendations for rehearsal spaces around Banbury/Bicester area.

It's not an area I know at all, but it's about halfway between us (Bushey, Herts), and a fella we're doing some festivals with over the summer (Coventry), and we're aiming to do a couple of long rehearsals in June to get ready.

All we really need is a room with a decent PA for Vox and DI mandolins, as well be taking everything else.

    Thanks in advance! ☺️

  2. Glad it worked out!

I was impressed with Thwaites too, firstly because after taking it in for a bit of adjustment, I also felt liked I walked away with a totally different bass... And secondly, because the luthier that fetched it out to me was wearing a t-shirt that read 'No, it's not a f@*#ing cello!'

  3. Many thanks for that @Happy Jack!

It's a helpful update, and I get the Basschat chop 'n' change compulsion, this is probably just part of that. I suspect if you dropped it from your chain you can't have felt it was making 'that' much difference, and I do wonder if this is just me staring down a 600 quid rabbit hole, when I'm relatively content with my sound anyway.

I really appreciate your offer of letting me have a 'fiddle abaht, fiddle abaht', that's very kind of you. It's not something I could audition at home though (paper thin walls, cranky neighbours), but I might have a day in a few weeks time when I can book a room down at Mill Hill and spend a few hours experimenting by myself. I'll give you a shout if I manage to get that together. Thank you!

  4. Holy thread resurrection Batman!

I've been looking at this recently, and from the handful of bass reviews online it seems pretty impressive. Rumour has it that a new batch is in the offing, and I'm seriously considering it.

To be fair, I'm pretty happy with the Realist Lifeline/Headway EDB 2 HE/Genz Benz Shuttle combo I'm using at the moment. In rehearsal recordings it sounds like a DB to me, but there's always that urge to get a little closer to the unamplified sound, however that's achieved. We've got a number of festivals over the summer, as a trio with Drums, Mandolin/Octave Mandolin & Vox, so filling out my sound a bit would be nice, and I want to make it as easy and quick as possible for the soundfolks to get me sorted, just give 'em a DI feed and Bob's yer Aunties' live-in lover.

So, a few years down the line, did this turn out to be a long term winner, or an overcomplicated, over rated pain in the neck?

  5. I bought a Vintage Strat from there a couple of years ago, largely because of their claim that nothing leaves the shop without a proper inspection/setup. When it landed it played beautifully... except for a choke on the 17th fret. I dropped them an email, they were horrified, had it picked up the next day, corrected it and sent it back the day after. In my experience, they're pretty serious about service.

  6. A tiny little miracle, does a bit of everything. Tuner, amp sims, effects, metronome/drum patterns, aux in, headphones/recording out. A surprising amount of volume for its rating, and it keeps it's sound quality all the way up the dial. Comes with the power supply, but will do 11 hours at full power on 6 AA batteries (I've never tested that comprehensively, but they do seem to last for ages), so it's great for busking, garden jams, etc.

In excellent condition, no scratchy pots, jacks or anything. Comes with the carry strap and manual.

£150 collected from Bushey. I reckon I have a suitable box and packing materials, so I'm happy to look at UK postage, which I reckon will be about 20-25 quid insured.

Stereo power amplifiers and four newly developed 4-inch (10cm) speakers

Eight COSM amps, six digital effects, and chromatic tuner built in

Rhythm Guide function for practical rhythm training

Stereo AUX input for CD/MP3 player, Phones/Recording out

Battery driven (6 x AA, up to 11-hour continuous use), AC adaptor included

    Compact body with carrying strap

  7. Maybe a bit of a left field suggestion, but here goes...

I avoid doubling like the plague, I'm either playing DB or EB... But... On occasions where my arm is twisted into it I take the Zoom B6. Two inputs, both of which are switchable between 1k and 10k input impedance, and a simple foot switch to toggle between the two. It sounds great with both instruments, I think so anyway.

  8. There should be some effort involved, but it shouldn't be horrible.

I have the Spiro mittels on mine, and it was hard. I was on the verge of ordering a set of weichs, but decided to book it in with Thwaites for a general MOT (as it was new to me and I wanted someone in the know to look over it), and to see if it could be made a touch easier to play. I told them the kind of music I was playing, and conversely the kind of thing I wouldn't really ever do.

They contacted me after a few days, said that reprofiling the bridge would do what I need. I think they charged me 80 quid... It saved me a few hundred quid over replacing the strings. It's infinitely easier to play now, still sounds strong, a bit growlier and less thumpy maybe. I'm happy with the mittels now and don't feel the need to change.

I'd have a chat with a pro before doing anything else. It worked for me anyway.

  9. I can't imagine a situation where hitting a bum note or dropping a beat is noteworthy. I expect everyone in the band to fluff something at least once a gig, we're not robots. I can't think of a gig I've attended, at any level, where there's not been something out of place somewhere.

Actively pointing out someone's error, is just bellendery. (unless it was hilarious, and you know that everyone, including the clanger dropper, will take it as such).
