1.
Hi - hope you won't mind my asking - I have an '89 XL2-T which is missing the boomerang. Does the NSD cello strap holder do the job OK, and where did you get it from?
The NSD cello strap holder is a massive improvement over the stock boomerang. The bass is held hoizontally instead of falling neck down as it does with the original setup. I would dare say it feels better than most basses with this setup. I bought mine when I still lived in the U.S.A. I do not remember where it came from, perhaps an eBay seller. You can find all the details you need from Ned's website: http://www.nedsteinberger.com/instruments/systems.php#boom
2. Up for sale is my white 1989 four-string XL-2a. I have owned it for seven years and never gigged it. As much as I would hope to use it for its intended purpose, reality suggests otherwise. It ought to go to someone who will play it. It is in very good, perhaps excellent condition. There is a small scratch at the top of the neck and two small places where the white is slightly yellowed from playing. It comes with some nice extras, such as a like-new Ritter bag, the original gig bag, an NSD cello strap holder plus the original boomerang, a spare jaw, and a straight string adapter. It currently wears Steinberger double-ball medium roundwound strings. Price £1800. No trades, sorry.
3. What is this layout like in terms of noise or hum?
4. Wow! Thanks for a truly informative post! The next step would be to see how the same set of strings sounds on each bass... But that is another ordeal entirely!

Happy 2014! I am still somewhat new to the UK but have lived in the EU for several years. I am from the USA, so there is a big mix of experiences. I have been playing the bass for a bit more than 30 years. Kinda scary when I think about it. My current lineup includes a mid-90's Aria Sinsonido travel bass, a 1989 Steinberger XL-2a in white, and a 1967 Rickenbacker 4005H that I bought from a pawn shop in 1985. I still have the original sales receipt! Enough banter. Here are photos of some present and past:
