About five years ago I went into a florists in Kidderminster the day before Valentine's day.

Ordered a bunch of Roses for the then Mrs StingRayBoy and nodded hello to the long-haired, leather jacketed old feller waiting for his flowers.

We stood there and made "Tsch, mad this innit, what are we like?" faces at each other for a very long five minutes, while my brain played "That's Robert Plant. That's Robert Plant. That's Robert Plant. Out of Led Zep." on a loop.

They say never meet your heroes, but I think he handled it really well.

    Who would have thought.

Did sound with a friend and his new PA in a village hall up the Tweed Valley. Interesting options for bass amplification. Two nice vintage drum kits but only got pics of one.

Poor guy on bass, we need to set up a crowdfunding to purchase him some shoes. 😀

Great song. What key are you doing it in. /

If i remember right it was Eb tuning and played on the E.

I played that in one of my very first bands just after taking lessons back in late 70's possibly 78.

    Happy days

    Dave

I’m almost certain that all the Lizzy songs have the instruments tuned down a half step to Eb.

  4. A couple of tales from me, I think I might have mentioned one in another thread.

We were forming a band in the mid eighties playing rock covers and auditioning for a drummer, a teenager came along with his dad, great little drummer, but we rejected him only because of the age difference, he was about fifteen years younger than the rest of us, his name was Mark Heaney.

Mark went on to play with The Seahorses, The Shining and Gang of Four, he is a world renowned session drummer who has toured and recorded with many big named artists/bands.

I played in a Free tribute band around 2008 and our original drummer quit due to a clash of commitments with his function band, our guitarist was the head guitar tutor for schools in Lincolnshire and had done several seminars with a well known drummer, this guy then became our new drummer in the Free tribute, his name was Jeff Rich ex Status Quo, Jeff was a real down to earth bloke and it was a great experience to share the stage with him on many gigs.

Three network- what a pile of shite! Never used to get a decent signal.

Skype- was atrocious, the calls constantly froze

Anything that has tarragon in it, disgusting herb, I'd rather eat a jar of marmite.

Old people's clothes, I will never dress that way.

I was in a band who were never going to make it, granted we were just ahead of the rise of Groove Metal but I wasn't interested in doing anything other than making the music I wanted to make but other members on the band thought we could/should be making it. We had a great rhythm guitarist who was in another band and his commitments very occasionally clashed with ours. The rest of the band wanted to throw him out because his first commitment was to his first band, obviously! I stayed out of it, I thought it was ridiculous to throw him out when a) we could do gigs with just one guitarist, b) it seemed, to me, quite obvious, we were going to be an originals band that played to decent crowds around our county. We did have some label interest but, again, we could have continued with him as an as and when member. Unfortunately egos prevailed and he was kicked out. A fortnight later he was on Top of the Pops with a top ten single. The rest of the band were jealous and dissing him, I thought it was great! It's the one and only time I've ever put up with such nonsense, I wish I'd walked when they chucked him out and I feel bad for sitting on the sidelines but it's hard to tell people they are living in cloud cuckoo land thinking the band is going to be a success.

    Please do tell.

Who we’re the band that made TOTP with the top ten single ?

Yup, banner for the band. We had a fine one, but he decide to get a new larger one..

The lights are for both, with plenty dotted around the drum kit. It's great to be seen, but I have accidentally booted one in a moment of on stage exuberance!

Surely if the guy didn’t transport the banner and lights, the band would be missing important visual impact, if he carries the most stuff, then he will be the longest one setting up and breaking it down, I think it’s pretty good of him to lug about all that extra band stuff as well as a full drum kit.

As a typical weekend warrior, playing in a four piece covers band, I, and I imagine many others of you, have to schlep our own gear in and out of venues. As I “joke” to punters lurking at the end of a gig, packing up is my least favourite part.

My band members and I all have a fair amount of gear each, but particularly so the drummer, who is forever adding more lights to his hoard. I have a dodgy back and very occasionally I need a bit of help shifting my cabs, which the drummer does do sometimes and as a band we help each other out with gear if one of us gets his out first.. except..

The drummer has so much stuff now, drums, banner, lights, more lights.. and the rest of us will have packed up our gear, loaded it in cars and be ready to go before he is even finished and ready to load out.

I nearly always have work the next day, the rest don’t. We do help the drummer out with his gear but it is becoming a joke. I generally want to be on my way when done and I’m often told to ‘k off and go but I get a bit of anxiety if I haven’t helped him with any of it. Annoying as it’s not my fault he has off the scale GAS. Why should I worry, just my nice side comes out and feel I should help! Should I just shrug it off and wave as I drive away?

Anyone else get a bit p’eed off with the mega slow packer in your band?

    Mark

    Question,

I’ll assume the banner is for the band.

Are his array of lights just aimed at his drum kit and him, or are they stage lights for the whole of the band ?

  9. Good productive rehearsal with the new band last night, four new songs now almost gig ready.

The Foo Fighters proved to be a bit difficult with some odd 7/4 time signatures thrown in, definitely needs a bit more work to be really tight.

Already have six confirmed bookings including a festival.

Rock You Like A Hurricane - Scorpions

    American Girl - Tom Petty

Times Like These - Foo Fighters

    La Grange - ZZ Top
