  1. I managed to offload my much unloved and unused Akai MPC Live on FB Marketplace.. 2 days later with itchy palms and eBay loaded up, I pulled the trigger on an old Akai MPC 1000

    MPC.thumb.jpg.34a4240757d8cd611f2bec3e5d13e077.jpg

She's a bit of an ugly duckling with a couple of scratches and needs some tlc to get her in top shape. Still I bagged it at a fair price so no regrets

First impressions, it's great. With the JJOS you have some nifty features like audio recording (actual D2D rather than just samples), some FX built in and lots more

Much better quality than the new MPCs (MPC Live, MPC One etc) and driven more by your ears than eyes! Kind of a half way house between the classics (60/3000/2000/xl) and the newcomers

Time will tell if she's a keeper

    Thanks for that!

I am intrigued by the "launchpad" - positively space age when our band plays renaissance music!

Yes, it looks like the dancefloor from Saturday Night Fever

I think the basic premise, is that it allows you to launch the various parts ('clips') of your song as and when required, more of a performance tool if you like

£88, it includes Ableton Live Lite and a whole bunch of other software

Is anyone using Ableton Live? I've multi-tracked some songs, and thinking of using it to add in a couple of the multitracked parts when we're playing live. There is a 30-day free trial, but I'd like to save that until I have free time to give it a good run out before committing to buy.

With reference to your initial question about triggering in multi-tracked parts using the follow tempo in Ableton - I did actually give it a try earlier and it worked surprisingly well.

Logic Pro is the DAW I use most often, and I'm not very keen on changing for editing & offline stuff. But I don't think it does anything live.

I'm a Logic user too, and wouldn't throw that aside for Ableton. However for your use case, I think you might be best served by the 'Lite' version or Ableton. You might want to invest in a mini Launchpad or similar to control it

It definitely requires thinking about the process in a slightly different way to the way Logic works - I can see how Ableton is viewed as difficult if you're used to a linear, tape multirack type workflow

Yes, giving the free trial is the best option I think. We have someone playing hand drum in the band, so likely a pickup or mic on that would be our best bet for an audio signal.

I'm not an Ableton guru, but I'm pretty sure this would be sufficient  .. I wouldn't worry about slight variations in tempo from your hand drum, as the time stretch is done on the fly, so the 'tracks' in Ableton will automatically fit in with the input tempo

Sound like an interesting project you are planning

I have  however got it going this morning . As I am semi amateur at recording, ( I use GarageBand ) , it initially wouldn't work at all.

Unfortunately GarageBand is a bit crap at syncing midi - ie. it doesn't do it :( Reason will (as you've discovered), as will Reaper, Cubase and most other DAWs - and of course Logic Pro X will

... you probably don't want to spend any more money right now, but Logic is a good investment for the future if you're on Mac

Our recordings had about 8 tracks - vocal, mandocello, drum, tambourine, double bass, recorder, viola. So 8 tracks should work.

The bit in Ableton's marketing that caught my eye was "Ableton Live listens to and adjusts its tempo based on incoming audio in real time, making it a dynamic part of the band instead of the tempo source that everyone has to follow". Sounds good, maybe too good?

Give it a try. I think you might be pleasantly suprised how well it actually works. You might be better off posting specific questions to someone that actually uses it, rather than on a Bass forum that attracts comments from people who have just heard internet rumours

How many tracks are you using? There is a 'Lite' version available for much cheaper and a lot of hardware these days includes a licence for it - it is limited to 8 tracks though

Talk to your teacher and tell them what you're thinking.

This 100%. I'm sure your teacher is great but not a mind reader. Have an open and honest discussion about what you want to learn, and ask them for feedback on your progress.

30yo is a mere boy compared to most of us here on Basschat!

I had one of these, fab quality.
Gave it to mate's daughter who was taking lessons more seriously than I was playing it. She still has it 16 years later and fronts her own band now (with newer keys).
You never know what your kindness might do sammybee.

We were gifted it by a local piano teacher. My daughter has enjoyed and learned to a very good standard over the past few years - I do hope someone else can make good use from it

Hi, does this dis-assemble at all for transport?

I was wondering if the top separated from the frame az interested.

    Many thanks

    Mark

    Hiya Mark,

The legs/frame/pedals are attached to the keyboard unit as supplied from the factory - I don't think it would be advisable to separate them

You would deffo need a van or a large estate car to transport it

  11. New piano forces gift!

We were donated this piano a few years ago, and want to pay it forward by passing it on

It has MIDI in/out/thru if you wanted to use it as a master keyboard, or if you already have a great keyboard and want to use it as a rather large sound module!

Overall it's a great sounding/feeling piano, and is free to someone who is able to collect - you'll need 2 people and a van (if you don't have a van I can put you in touch with a local man and van I can vouch for).. Happy to help you load it at this end

    We're in Northampton, NN3

With that kind of money I would be booking a visit to Peach Music and it would be worth the drive !

A quality shop with great stock and good staff. I’ve been into and used most of the big named stores and none come close to Peach, maybe Anderson’s is second best for an actual store but that’s too far away

PMT are probably the worse and I wouldn’t think of going to them unless I was desperate for some strings !

The stock and QC is woeful in my experience and I’ve used them on and off over the last ten years

I wouldn't drop that much on bass from PMT ha ha.. no I was keyboard/piano shopping this weekend

When I finally got to speak to someone, they tried to flog me an ex-demo model for the same price as Andertons are selling boxed new ones!

Just over a year ago I was in the market for a keyboard controller for my DAW. I'd done my research on-line, but thought it would be nice to get some hand-on experience of a few before I made my final decision. We have a fairly large PMT here in Nottingham so the next time I was in town I went in. This is the first time I'd been there since COVID, and the store was looking very sorry with loads a spaces on the walls that used to be full of guitars. The keyboard/high-tech area was cordoned off with a note informing me to ask if I wanted to try anything. I was told that someone would be along shortly to help me. I passed the time waiting by looking at the much reduced selection of guitars and basses and after about 10 minutes and when no help was forth-coming I left.

I bought my controller on-line from Amazon.

This pretty much sums it up I think!

I think overall, retail is struggling on a few fronts at the moment. In particular, rising costs, decreased footfall and much tighter margins to remain competitive against some of the online giants.

If it is struggling, the very least they could do would be interested in potential customers ... and maybe keep the shop floor looking a bit better? Those two thing they can do for nowt!

  15. I like to support my local shops where I can, when they sell the things I need to purchase - and am happy paying a (small) premium for this convenience

Went to PMT in Northampton this Sunday, looking to spend £2-2.5k - staff seemed a bit disinterested, shop looks a bit unloved too

Get the feeling they are just waiting for the axe to fall, which would be a great shame and loss for the town

Anybody else get the same vibe from their physical shops?

Well....you're pointing me in the right direction .infact, I think you've more or less made my decision 🙂

I looked at the Electron , and the RD-8 . I will be getting the RD-8 mk 2!
I watch Bad Gear channel every week , and he did a great review of the electron. Having said that, audiopilz always makes anything sound good . I prefer the look of the Behringher , and it sounds great imho . I hope it's easy to use . I'll check on YouTube to confirm .

    Thanks for recommendations . 😼👍

I'm sure you'll love it! It's not that difficult to use once you've got to grip with the sequencer functions.. happy twiddling those knobs!

Good points about the drum brute and tomcat . I do like the tomcat nevertheless , but no cowbell 🐄 .

Price wise , not more than £200 if I can help it . I did consider the volca kick , but not sure .
My creations are only recording at home onky on GarageBand ,  one day I may be brave enough to use logic .

I use moogs , Waldorfs and a few iPad apps when I'm in the mood . Bass guitars of course , playing along to drums with various effects etc . More often than not I go for ambient stuff like tangerine dream / klaus schulze etc . Then the inner headbanger in me makes me play bass and drums etc . I also have a couple of boss sp samplers ..

Could you stretch to an Electron model samples? (£285 at Andertons) They get a lot of love & it's a sampler too :)

Have you thought about the Behringer RD-8 (TR-808 copy) or RD-6 (TR-606 copy)? nice analog boxes with a lot of hands on control and some modern embelishments? Both easily within budget for a mint used one. With the rest of your gear I think the RD-8 would fit in quite nicely, esp for ambient type stuff
