There's long been an anti-'intellectual' prejudice, not just the right wing press but across UK society at large, which doesn't exist across western Europe. Take opera for example. Here it's 'music for snobs' but in Italy (which I know best) it's for everyone and anyone. There there's no association between high art and  social class. In France, which I've also lived in, there are living philosophers that are near household names. It most definitely is a British disease. Maybe it's similar in other anglophone countries I can't say. There you go, If I was overheard saying 'anglophone' in an English pub I'd get my head kicked in. As for 'boffins' that equates with nerd and geek in the UK and the US (or whatever the equivalent of boffins is) for that matter. Look at some English phrases e.g. 'smart Alec', 'too clever by half', these are perjoratives (now I've gone and done it).  Going back to music, it's quite depressing too be reminded how Oasis and Spice Girls fever gripped the general British public back in the 90s a time when 'Jack the lad' publications like Loaded and FHM were go-to reading for males under 30.

    Absolutely 💯

I've owned over thirty basses over the years and I would say that 75% of them were P basses, I've tried and owned many other great basses as well including Warwicks, high-end Ibanez's, Jazz basses, etc.. but I kept going back to P basses and I'm now down to just two Precisions. 👍

The P is a veritable silver bullet!

  3. Well, I finally cut a deal with Bassbros recently after being a bit of a voyeur for some time.

The deal was struck with Will over the course of several WhatsApp messages-and I had to prompt him a couple of times-but otherwise I reckon they over delivered.

I received a fair trade-in and my new bass arrived exactly as described on a day of my choosing, perfectly set-up with new strings of my choice.

    I'll be back.

  4. I owned an Enfield Lionheart and it was a superb instrument. Very 'Walesque' by design, although I much preferred it to my Wal playability wise.

The pickup system is extremely effective and very clever indeed. That said, as has been said, I only settled on a couple of settings/tones, whilst the other gazillion went to waste.

I briefly had a 2nd gen V7 from a well known retailer and sent it back same day, tell tale signs that someone else had rejected it, fret buzzes and rattles, maxed out truss rod so wouldn't take a set up, and wonky controls. I don't believe that is typical of the series, and quite surprising that had got out the door for this company.

Same, including a faulty preamp and proud inlay.

  6. I had the chance to go pro towards the late 80's through circumstance - you know, one of those right place, right moment deals with a Glasgow band flying high in the charts ...

As a school dropout with no qualifications two buses arrived at the same time and another opportunity coincided, namely the offer of a 'job for life' which paid well and offered a good pension.

Once I'd weighed the implications I opted for the steady income stream.

No real surprise, I hated the job. It's particularly difficult for those more inclined to creative expression to fit into the mainstream. Nonetheless, in the end it gave my family a comfortable life and I retired at fifty-two.

Given the 'what if' factor, would I do the same again? Definitely not. If I had the chance I wouldn't do anything again. Why would anyone. Life's about new experiences, right?

My only regrets centre on the things I didn't do.

  7. Pop an Allen key or screwdriver into one of the facing holes and turn: right-tight (less relief), left-loose (more relief).

Just like the rod systems featured on Musicman and a few other brands.

They’re very much a handmade boutique item. Personally I found mine heavy, strange and awkward to play. Personally I don’t see what all the fuss is, but I’m a sample size of 1.

Me too. One of my least favourite basses ever. Immense preamp and pickups tho!

I've had a few of those even with a Fender headstock. "Is it an American?" followed by a judgemental look of disappointment at my response!

I'm genuinely surprised about this. Honestly, I've played gigs forever and nobody's ever cared a jot about my gear. Maybe it's because of my playing 😂

  10. For me it's akin fixing stickers on your car ... Just no! Then again, horses for courses, live and let live and all that.

I read once that Gail Ann Dorsey always secretes a picture of Marilyn Monroe underneath her scratchplates - now that does appeal to me.

I use 50-130 roundcore nickel plated steel on my 34 inch scale ACG and they are nice and flexible, not stiff like Roto 66's and not quite as loose as other strings, feel is allot like DR high beams to me.

    Jonny

Thanks, I'll try them out 😃
