Amazing bass! Are the GA24's the same body size as series 3s?

There's not too much difference in body size, between many of the models *except the Series 1 and the "Roadie" range - a favourite of mine. But obviously, the tail piece on the "George Anderson" is a cool feature. The "tear drop" string anchors are from the discontinued Calibas Bass, which spawned many high-end custom design ideas/features and Basses...

This one looks fantastic, I’ve seen it on Google I think, what model is it 🙂

I've tracked this Bass down on Instagram.. and I'm pretty sure it belongs to a Bass player in Brazil - who tours Europe occasionally with a Band (not since late 2019 though!). Many of the Basses that J.D. (John, Mike, Andy and Toby) produce are custom spec; and within reason, you can have what you're prepared to pay - and wait - for.. & there's a long queue...

  3. It would be incredibly rude of me not to contribute something to this thread...

This is John's "Infinity" Custom GA24 that he made for me - over a period of about 18-months - in 2000/2001. I've owned at least 6 other JD's through the years'...

She is 20 years' old this year - and still plays as well as she did when I first brought her home. This may sound a little strange... but you cannot "slap" her. I kid you not!!

The on board pre-amp has an added "presence" boost control, for extra bottom end; and the truss rod's (as far as I know) are made of graphite - rock solid sh*t.

Thank you J.D.  More Jaydee Basses on my Pinterest here:- https://www.pinterest.co.uk/Simon08edward/jaydee-bass/

    Surely it's horses for courses?

I have a VoxValvestate for guitar, simulating amps and effects, my brother mocks it but accepts it's a sensible choice for someone whose guitar playing has only ventured on stage once...

An all-in-one is a great way to keep a new player interested and active and exploring different types of effects, what works and when - they can always upgrade later.

    I was answering a Rhetorical question. 😁

Yes - of course, it's horses for courses. No - the M O O D and Radical Delay are not "better" or "less better" than an H9 multi-effect. Apples and pears.

  5. .. from a technical point-of-view, for covering the rhythm sound - melodic arpeggios, an enhanced version of the main riff, and/or sustained power chords, rather than the root note of the chord, could be a good fit (?), dependant on material and taste.

And as this is the "effects" bit of BC; my personal recommendation for Octave/chorus combo's are: - BOSS OC-5/OC-2 + pre-loved TC Corona or TC flashback delay (2290 MOD setting, with delay "OFF").

    Best wishes, Simon.

You get the same comment as Lozz and toneknob got: so which would you rate as your best purchase?! Lozz managed to 'fess up in the end after much collective BC pressure. My money is on the Eventide H9...no contest, right?!

PS a Schecter Stiletto would be awesome, you'll love it - what rig would you be playing it through? But treat yourself to the 5 string rather than the 4 string - comes with a free thumb rest. (I've got the 8 string which has four free thumb rests 😁)

Apologies for the delayed response - and it would be a lie to say that I've been "so busy" actually playing Bass (!) and/or reading instruction manuals etc

Ok... it would be absolute sacrilege to choose a multi-effect over two excellent stand-alone pedals.. <sigh> but.. yes, the preloved 'mint' H9 is outstanding.

I'd be playing the Stiletto through a menagerie of mostly valve/tube pre-amps (as per signature) and a pair of vintage Beyer DT-100's at home. This also includes a Trace GP12XV and the *new* V.2 Edison from Night Owl industries 🦉, on pre-order from the US. It's a valve in a tidy compact pedal format. The V.1 is fantastic... a keeper, and the V.2 is a great upgrade.

I know there's a lot going on in the world.. but, looking forward to 2022 already.. and lots of musical adventures. What are you hoping for? Make a wish! Simon.

Following on from the same topic we've successfully run since 2018 - a chance for some useful hints and tips with Black Friday and Xmas goodies still ahead, and, of course, nothing to stop us changing our minds between now and year end!

As with previous years, the only "house rules" are that it's bass gear and something you bought (or at least arrived) in 2021.

Here's last year's thread as a reminder of some of the goodies we bought then.

And definitely post your GAS inducing pics please!

Well! I surprised myself with how much I'd actually brought in last year (without selling anything).. so, I thought I'd do the same again this year: -

Looking down my list of 2021 purchases, they are: - in no particular order... all pre-loved and boxed etc

    1. Modtone tremolo Pedal (I collect Tremolo pedal's; for use on Bass - for some insane reason)

    2. TC Electronic Polytune 3 Noir - with buffer

    3. Chase Bliss Audio "MOOD" - delay, looper

    4. Alexander Neo Series "Radical" Delay

    5. One Control Mosquite Wet/Dry FX Blender - with buffer

    6. Eventide H9 Multi FX - my Xmas present to self - kid's mum already gift wrapped it up!!

    7. Pedaltrain Novo 18 Pedal board - 5 rails - with soft case

Also have my eye on a Schecter Stiletto Bass - black cherry finish - either 4 or 5 string; maybe next year!

    Hi all,

I was lucky enough to be centre stage front row for Level 42 at Sheffield City Hall last night after keeping hold of the tickets for 2 years. In fact, my seat was bang in front of Mark so I had no problem checking his gear out (not that gear madam!) and was surprised to see him running his old Jaydees through a Mark Bass rig, not a Status or TC in sight all evening.

This may seem irrelevant but it surprised me - anyone know why?

    FB_IMG_1635879365751.jpg

.. my first "Level" gig was @ Hammersmith Odeon in 1990, and up until this latest tour, I had never heard nor see him play Jaydee Basses at any of the numerous gigs I've seen over the last 30 or so years'. In that sense.. about bl**dy time!! Obviously, I'm happy.. they're great Basses.. and they're sounding really quite good through the Mark Bass gear too.

I wonder if there will be either a CD or DVD ? 🤔  #level42

Hello! I'm new here so just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Saskia, and I've been playing the electric bass for about a year. I've been learning through Scott's Bass Lessons, which is fab but I lack the motivation to get on there and do the lessons - also there is so much and it can be a bit intimidating.. I think sometimes the best way to learn is by jumping in at the deep end and jamming with some other musicians so that's my plan! I'm currently using an Aria Pro II Cardinal Series bass - which was my dad's in the 80s - with flat wound strings. Looking to network with some other bassists and get some tips on how to progress!

Hello - and welcome to BC Saskia...

I also started on an Aria Pro II; They're good Basses to start off with.. and my only advice would be to get the Bass set up properly, with a nice low-ish action.

Hope you enjoy the forums.. & best wishes!

I pretty much only play fretless these days and I've started to experiment with pedals. Got a chorus, reverb and octave pedal so far and apart from the octave, the chorus and reverb I'm enjoying using. I'd like to try a compressor pedal and wondering if the Behringer CS400 is worth a shot for a cheap effort or I should avoid and go for something like a Boss CS-3, Keeley or other? My Ampeg PF500 does have a compressor built in but it doesn't seem to do much but that might just be me 😁

I play in a 3 piece acoustic band with singer/acoustic, drums with brushes and me on fretless. Its chilled laid back songs so the bass is very melodic and doing some lead parts.

Any advice on compressor thoughts appreciated.

The BOSS CS-3 is a good starting point. Also, experiment with a comp near the front-end of your chain - And at the end, to see what sound you like?

I'm very old school, and still have an old TC Nova Dynamics, which if you can find one pre-loved on-line is fantastic. And TC's Hypergravity - which I do not like at all.

At some point (not any time soon though), I'd like to try the "CompIQ" mini by Becosfx, but at £169 it's expensive: -

Yes, indeed. But.. a few of us have a 'Live' board - usually smaller with essentials, and a 'Creative/recording' board for home, on the road or in a studio - with every option imaginable. The mistake (?) many make is "down sizing" where just because you might not use an effect 'Live' that you won't need it in some other context. It sounds daft! but you'll be surprised how many go around this loop - me included.

    😁 ✌️💛

Lol!! This is the story of my pedalboard life 😂

Welcome to the club Lee! Don't panic - it's not exclusive.. if only we'd known that the solution to our pedals and effects quandary (does less = more?) is no; but more = "more good". More boards... more bigger boards... more smaller boards... more cables for boards... and more stuff... that we absolutely do need - some of the time... if not all of the time...

But no "down sizing". Ever. OK???  😁 ✌️💛

… had a rehearsal last night for the Funk/Motown/Soul band and it’s amazing how many of my pedals I DIDN’T need lol!! Least they’re there if I ever do (and I took one of my smaller boards, oh well 😁).

I’m liking the thought of smaller setups at the mo tbh 👍🏼

  13. I'd always recommend a Loop switch when using multiple stompboxes.. once-upon-a-time I had a Carl Martin Octaswitch 2, which was different gravy (in terms of the sound quality/clarity), but for the money, the dip switch options were limited. And the size!!

The one I use now and recommend is by One Control - which also has a separate Tuner out. For around £100.

    https://www.thomann.de/gb/one_control_3_channel_loop_switcher.htm

As per thread, I'm also looking at aquiring a dry/wet "blender" pedal, and this one by Lazy-Bear effects could be the one.. :-

  14. New year January sales shopping!

Picked up this Brainworx SSL 4000 G console emulation up for less than $20 - with an incredible discount voucher. Obviously, you had to sign up with Plugin Alliance prior, because these are crazily expensive at any other time..

You never know.. I might actually finish some new music this year, with this at the front end. Of everything.

You don’t need one if you have an active bass, or a pedal with a buffered bypass early on in the signal path. It’s likely that you already have at least one in your chain already!

This is an interesting post - and one that could run and run!

I never thought I needed any kind of buffer. I've always had active Basses, and used a BOSS OC-2 early on in my effects chain..

An opportunity came up recently to acquire a pre loved JHS Pedals "Little Black Buffer" for around £40. Worth a punt. And it's made a noticeable difference to my tone; with a brighter top end - certainly. It's the very last pedal > before going into the amp.

I'm now looking to upgrade my tuner to the Polytune 3, to have a buffer at the front end as well.

  16. I didn't think I'd brought in that much gear in 2020! .. And then I checked my Instagram 😮

    The Winners: JHS "Tidewater" tremolo (by Josh Heath Scott); "Westwood" Overdrive (by Earthquaker Devices);

    Runners up: HOF 2 by TC; Xenagama Tail loop 2 (by One Control); Neo Series "Wavelength" (by Alexander pedals); OC-10 Octave (by Valeton);

Not great: Delayla vintage echo pedal (by Carl Martin). Just not my cup of tea.

  17. Slight tangent.

Increasingly, there's been signs of pre-Brexit activity with some on-line suppliers. On more than one occassion this year, I've been led to believe that I was ordering gear from a supplier and distributor (with a UK address). Only to experience fairly significant delays in shipping - from Europe.

The first, turned out to be shipping from Holland, and the other from Poland. Unless you can establish they have what you require IN STOCK (or a prepared to wait, with all the anxiety that entails), then buyer beware!!

  18. Yes, I'm 47 and still (after all these years') have a SoundCloud account to not only host my own music, but also to listen to, and occasionally share/promote other artists tracks - via my own curated playlists. I've never really got along with Spotify, on either desktop or mobile.

The *new* music I tend to "like" (and save for later), usually features recorded instruments - guitars, drums, Bass and keys - and not what is modern R&B or ultra EDM genres. There are still plenty of Bands and solo artists out there, that I'd never heard of, writing decent, well crafted music.

It will be interesting to see over the next 18-months just what effect the various global crisis have had on bands/artists, and what the longer term effects on writing/producing music will be? I hope everything will be alright...
