  1. Custom build I had hoped to get my grubby mitts on by the end of the month delayed by tardy hardware from the manufacturer. Bah humbug.

  2. Reading Geddy Lee's Big Beautiful Book of Bass... I always wanted a '62 stack-knob Jazz, now I REALLY want one.... and an Epiphone Newport...

Having played one and owned a few pre-CBS jazzes the magic of a vintage instrument is more often in your head than in your hands...

Plus one would cost you about £15,000 I think!

Quite. Wanting and owning are very different things of course!

  3. New (that's pre-owned but new to me) bass day! SKC Bogart 5 string arrived yesterday, quick string change this morning and spent the day in the studio with it today. Plays great, records beautifully!

      Yeah to Bogarts! They’re excellent.

  4. Just replacing my signature, and can't find my feedback thread... sorry, am I being dim??

Nope - I had exactly the same problem and the search wouldn't find my thread either. Eventually had to go back through my email notifications to fine the link....bit pants....

You can use Google - 'search item - forum - basschat'. To find feedback it would be 'membername - feedback - basschat' ...not ideal, but it works.

Thanks everyone... as I approach the 'autumn years' I find absorbing new info a bit more of a challenge...

  5. Following the example of our venerable colleague Les, I frequented a very nice purveyor of quality kebabs post-gig last night in Kingston-Upon-Thames. By the time we got there (about 1am) they had sold out of lamb donner, so I had a chicken donner instead. A little greasy, but quite palatable. Our visit all went without incident, but I found out this morning that after I left, the guitarist's missus was involved in an altercation with a bunch of lairly, drug-fuelled, loud-mouthed clubbers, who took exception to her simply because she's Asian. She's a fiesty lass, so she stood her ground, but although there were no physical injuries, she got pushed around and called some things that I won't repeat here. I hope (perhaps in vain) that when the perpetrators woke up this morning they felt thoroughly ashamed of themselves. A sad end to an otherwise lovely evening.

Ah, sorry to hear of such an incident :(
Glad to hear she stood her ground - more people need to step in, to make the perpetrators aware that their behaviour is unacceptable.....
PS. what with yourself and Les - have I logged on to "kebabchat" by mistake? ;)

      Mmmm, Kebabchat...

Have you tried having the pitta on the side so it doesn't go all soggy and you can mop up the leftover sauce with it?

The walking dead come out here too in the early hours. Nobeeds really. I don't think they would get away with victimising an Asian looking lass ( or any lass) here. Somebody would definitely step in. Besides, virtually all the takeaways are owned by Asians and all the taxi drivers that pick up on the long 'food stretch' are Asian too. Wouldn't be long before the walking dead were given the Rick Grimes treatment!

  6. DPD... what a shower of cowboys! Despite multiple requests, they continue to leave stuff on my doorstep without getting it signed for. Expensive stuff!!

I've had one or two issues with a few couriers
Once, a passing stranger knocked on my door to say he'd picked up a small parcel with my address on it....
It was lying in the gutter some 60 or 70 yards from my house, and some kid had kicked it across the road!
It wasn't bass or music-related gear, but it was fairly delicate. Fortunately, it had been really well packed
My front garden / drive is 20 feet long - Had the courier just left it on the pavement? Grrr :(

Maddening. The thing that rankles is I had an email from the supplier the day before stating that ‘safe place’ delivery was not an option, and a signature was required because of the value of the item (nearly a grand). As I knew I was unlikely to be at home I logged in via the DPD app and changed the delivery to my neighbour, which was duly confirmed by email. I got the alert with the one-hour delivery window, and got another alert saying it had been delivered, complete of a photograph of the box, left sitting on my doorstep! Needless to say, no signature was obtained. I did consider whether I could just say I didn’t receive it as it wasn’t signed for, but I’m too honest...

Royal Mail are buggers for delivering their own 'signed for' packets without even trying to get a signature too.  They clearly set the bar for how other firms behave in our country.

  7. Just got a set of Newtone strings... never heard of them until a few weeks ago, and initial impressions are very good. Quite a bit firmer than my usual D'Addarios, but full, bright and consistent. I shall report back after tomorrow night's rehearsal...

Yeah, I ordered on their website and the options were very comprehensive!

I always found Newtone helpful.  I had a set of five DBEs made to order.  I got them weeks quicker than the order I had placed at the same time with a major Derby shop - Cackle and Run.  For me there is a bonus in that it's nice to support a manufacturing business in my area.

I brought my Steinberger in to the old workshop and it was measured up to make perfectly tapered B and E strings.  They've gone onto better premises now.

I also started using them on my Dingwall a while back as I didn't like the standard gauges that were available, and I'm able to order a custom set to my own specs. They are great  strings and I like supporting a British company. More people definitely need to know about them!
