  1. Yes they are a bit more attentive these days and are red hot on public liability insurance - a few years ago somebody pulled one of our light poles over after we had gone home. It hit someone and they subsequently made a claim.

    That SR5 looks great in natural. I'd be tempted but I'm seriously considering a Sterling 5.

  2. Steve - I've tried the PM5 lots of times. It sounds great and has a good tight P vibe going on if desired. I also tried out the Sadowsky M5 they have in recently and it sounded brilliant. Great P vibe from the neck pup in passive, great burp from the bridge pup and awesome slap tone from both in active mode. Neck was a joy to play as well. I just think they seem very expensive for what you get...

    Yep I remember the orange Ray they had in - it stood out! I've got GAS for a Sterling 5 but nobody seems to have any in yet.

    Is your Sandborg the one the GuitarGuitar had in for a while? Tried that one a few times and I really liked it. The Bubinga PM5 they have in sounds good as well but its a bit bling.

    WOT - meant to say I was on the same bill as the Caffs a few weeks ago at Durham Gala Theatre - shame you weren't on it or we could have hooked up.

  4. I've tried a few when I've been over in Carlisle chatting with Chris and co.

    You really do need to try one as they have their own sound and feel depending on the woods used.

    Whilst they are all the same design and have the same circuitry and pups, they do have subtle differences. As far as the generic sound goes I agree it is fairly "middle ground" but thats not necessarily a bad thing for sitting in the mix, and no different to many other basses I've tried - e.g. Yamahas. I think the circuit is designed not to be too extreme and enhance the natural tone.

    Generally I've always found them to have a very clear sound with a sweet top end.

  5. Exactly same thing happened to me when I was about 16. Rehearsal at Newcastle Poly Coach Lane Campus. Was moving two mic stands with my bass round my neck. I had a hold of the mic in my left hand and the mic stand in my right hand touched the strings on my bass with the stand. My hands just locked, couldn't let go, couldn't speak - just heard an awful humming noise and felt my chest geting tighter. I fell backwards off the stage and remember thinking that's it as I was curling up into a ball. One of the guys ran over and saved my life by switching my amp off and eventually I could let go.

    I still have one of the burn scars on my finger 27 years later - it was down to the bone.

  6. I've just done a production of Jesus Christ Superstar and used a Warwick FNA Jazzman. I found it nice and versatile. The well voiced mid control gave me more definition and honk in the busy stuff like "What's the Buzz", I switched to both pick ups and boosted the treble a bit for the slap passages in the Overture and "Heaven On Their Minds", and I backed off the mid and treble for stuff like "I Don't Know How To Love Him". It also has a passive / active switch.

    Not using fretless very much at the moment, so looking for a trade for a cheaper 5 string fretless (or a fretted 5 that could be de-fretted) and preferably cash my way. Let me know if you are interested and what you have got!

    Also looking at changing my GK1001RBII for a Epifani 502 or LMII / F1 so would consider either in the equation as well.

    Will sort out photos asap but it is AAAAA sunburst flame maple with lined ebony fingerboard, twin Bart soapbars and mid boost switch, in immaculate condition with a fitted Pedulla hard case. Really is one of the best fretless basses out there - fantastic singing tone / mwah. New cost would be the neck-end of £3000.

    Based in North East - not really into any of that posting mullarkley so would prefer collection or meet up (within reason).

  8. Get a cheap 6 and give it a try. I had to get a 6 to realise 5 was enough for me. I had made the transition to 5 easily and figured (not un-reasonably) I could make the same jump to a 6. Stuck with it for a while but eventually went back to 5.

  9. I totally agree mate. As a self taught player who had to work everything out by ear I've relied on said ears for years - and worked out a fairly close approximation of Rhythm Stick in the process. (However in recent years I've started to look into the black arts of theory and reading). I think there is far too much reliance on tab these days at the expense of ear training - but I'm starting to lapse into grumpy old man mode - so I'll get me coat.

  10. I've just done a lesson and the student has just bought a BTB. I had a good look at it and for the money it seems to be an amazing amount of bass for the money. Nice woods, through neck construction and Bartolinis. Sounded good too. I would have one of these as my main bass no hesitation. I think the Yamaha TRB's are probably worth a go as well.
