Barefaced One10 £300
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! 2019 was quite eventful on the gear-acquisitions front, and I now have a home studio that’s far too full! So commences my 2020 clear-out and rig renovation, to something more tonally unified and modular.
This One10 is a little bit special being that as No. 31 it is the first cloth grilled cab that was ever produced, after the promotional 30 that were discounted on release.
Other than that, you all know what these are about! It's been well used and never let me down. Being an early one, it has suffered from tolex peel, but I'm yet to apply any glue, so it's not been so significant as to cause much of a problem.
No trades please.

Fender Rumble 800 Head £375
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! 2019 was quite eventful on the gear-acquisitions front, and I now have a home studio that’s far too full! So commences my 2020 clear-out and rig renovation, to something more tonally unified and modular.
This head had me very very excited on purchase. It's an incredible head for the money and easily fended off competition from Darkglass, GK, Markbass and others head to head at Andertons through my BF One10. You can see my excitement in the video above! Sadly I wanted to move to a rig that looked unified & professional, as well as sounded, and with the lack of a high-end lightweight 1x12 from Fender, sadly it must move on. I think this is a very versatile head with plenty of quick-access to tones with the buttons on the front. The drive is also very useable across the whole spectrum up to a light distortion in a live mix. Overall I think this is a bit of a "sleeper" head on the market as it stands and a bargain at the same time!
It's as new, and unmarked, with fewer than 15 gigs under its belt! It includes an IEC cable as well as the footswitch for the drive and the speakon cable provided with the head.
No trades please unless it’s towards an Aguilar DB751.

Ashdown CTM 30 Little Stubby (Prototype) £400
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! 2019 was quite eventful on the gear-acquisitions front, and I now have a home studio that’s far too full! So commences my 2020 clear-out and rig renovation, to something more tonally unified and modular.
This is THE Little Stubby that was used in the original Ashdown promo images and travelled to all the guitar shows with them. I picked it up at the end of the second day of the London Bass Guitar Show and it’s been with me ever since. It’s a fine little amp for recording as well as medium gigs if you give it enough speakers 🔊. It’s unmarked on the rear and fully hand made and hand wired as a result of it being a prototype. The top output on the rear is a balanced DI.
As you can see it sadly came into contact with a screw on the base of a class D head, causing the scratch on the top, but other than that it’s in original condition.
If you’re an Ashdown fan this is a great opportunity to own a one-of-a-kind piece!

I generally prefer a DXR15 in front of me as a monitor. It doesn’t really work in vertical orientation on the floor behind me as it moves forward through the gig from the vibrations of the cabinet 😂 It sounds great though!

Right hand will help too and I don’t think this is being taken into account. Playing closer to the bridge will produce a little more Mid definition in that B. I’m an over the P pickup player most of the time, naturally moving back between the P and J when it’s something that requires a little more punch and a little less bloom. But I never naturally play over the bridge, which will contribute to me finding the P muddy on a low B, 34 scale, p pickup only.
You can make a P sound more Jaco if you play by the bridge. Same need be applied here imo! All about that technique for me!

I agree wholeheartedly. Never found a P pickup that works on the low B solo'd with the definition I need and expect. Ed Friedland says the same in one of his YT reviews, traditional P orientation and a 34 inch scale is too undefined. Even my Sadowsky PJ5 I need some bridge pickup to be happy, and normally thats 45% bridge. I think what you're describing @Al Krow, is the reason I struggle with BBs with the switch, and why my BB5000 was sold. Only having the option of P, PJ, or J doesn't give the smaller variations I need to make it work on the B.

Back with the bass and just checked: 0 forward tilt. Obviously everybody’s physically different and wears a bass at different heights, but I can’t see why it would! A very different experience to the G&L ASATs I’ve played. T

Elite being replaced with 'Ultra'. A lot of the changes are re: neck profile/radii and new generation pickups. It's not very exciting re: the bass stuff, but the guitars have quite a few super-strat type features. Nothing to be excited for us I'm afraid (if you're me at least!)

Yamaha BEX4 £350 🔵
A great semi-hollow body bass. I’m surprised that these don’t get more attention with the range of sounds this bass offers. Piezo, magnetic pickup, blend and a powerful active 3 band EQ can genuinely get it from old school to modern with ease. It’s lightweight with a broadly appealing neck profile, neither tiny nor huge.
The electronics have recently been re-soldered to ensure the bass is problem free for the foreseeable future. It comes with a hard-soft case, much like those provided with a Sadowsky.
The bass has some marks and an amount of surface scratching from the last owner, but these marks are only obvious under certain daylight lighting conditions. Sat on the wall without daylight directly on it, you’d have a hard time seeing them.

I would agree that sticking with 34 and looking at technique may be the problem. I’ve taught girls at the Rock Project from 8+ and their size wasn’t normally the issue, but where they had the bass. Strap all over the place, the bass not resting vertically against the body etc.
However, getting a new bass is always inspiring and a shorter scale bass is always good to have in the armoury. Assuming the aforementioned technical elements are fine, anything based on the Mustang body (bronco, Mustang, musicmaster) from Squier and Fender will be nice and compact and should make life a lot easier. They balance well, fit nicely, and no one will complain about them not sounding right when it comes to gigs/achieving those classic tones on records.

I generally like the Ampeg cabs with any other head. I like the low mid bump from the cabs, I always have. With Ampeg heads I find it’s a bit too dark and indistinct for me. Fender head + Ampeg cabs would be my preference!

Yeah I was shocked by that too as I only started playing 40s after bass gear started shutting down and weren’t getting any more strings in stock. It’s just a different kind of low end to my ear. I think it may actually be that there’s a little less fundamental in the 40s making the low end “puffier” and bloom more, more like a an optical compressor sound (which is a big part of my setup). But I am now desperately searching for weird words to describe the difference so it’s all in the realms of personal experience haha 😂

You can dig into the 45s a bit more, little more tension. I actually prefer the bottom end on the 40s but I’ve had a big batch of 45s to get through.

Haha! I love it, would keep it if I could. Had Fender done a Neo 112 rig At the top end of the market there would be no chance of it leaving. Bit of a shame overall, but the compliments I’m getting on the new rig as a whole is making up for the loss. Still - a shame, and everything I said in my review still holds true - this thing is imo great!
