This is exactly how I started playing bass.  At age 43 I worked out it was the bass lines I had been singing along to since I was about 12, not the guitar solos!!

Very similar to me, except that I was 53, haha 😎

  2. If I have a favourite bass player it's probably him. Loved his playing long before I ever took up a bass myself. I could sing some of his bass lines before I even realised it was a bass that was making that amazing sound.

So sad we lost him way too soon.

  3. My old band could never understand why I always asked them not to put 'I Fought the Law' back to back on the set list with 'The Letter' by the Boxtops.

They both seem simple enough, but have fast and furious parts in the bass line which really stretched my arthritic little finger. Doing them one after the other would really make my finger ache.

  4. At previous London Bas Guitar Shows, I've seen both Robert Trujillo and Ida Neilson perform (separately) with line ups that included two bassists. Both amazing, as you can imagine!

But just quickly googled both of them and couldn't find evidence of this being a permanent arrangement in either case.

Led Zeppelin: In My Time of Dying

"my dying dying dying....cough   Thats got to be the one hasn't it!"

I think its Bonham that says 'Thats got to be the one hasn't it"

Another classic from Physical Graffiti. So glad they left that in.

And BTW, this is what I want played at my funeral.

    Led Zep, Black Country Woman.

Chatter and Airplane Noise... "No, Leave It

I was thinking of mentioning this, but wondered if it qualified as they deliberately left it in.

But either way it's a classic moment, isn't it?

I remember listening to this in various friend's bedrooms, and always joining in with this quote. Happy days 🙂

Would have loved to see the magic band. Major influence on my guitar playing a long time ago.

As a counterpoint, I Just remembered one of the most encouraging events when we played on the same bill as Isaac hayes and he came up to us after our set and said 'I really dig your music man'.  Having the approval of black moses was mind blowing and gave us encouragement to keep going.

    Wow, that's quite an endorsement!

  8. Not me - but this happened a few years before I started playing bass. Went to see The Magic Band with a few friends, one of whom was a bass player. After seeing the wonderful Rockette Morton in action he declared that he was ready to give up bass playing!

(PS, we also met Rockette and had a lovely chat with him. I have probably boasted about this before). 🙂

  9. I never mastered the art of slapping and I'm too old to learn now, especially as I don't really need it for most of the stuff I play.

But sometimes I wish I could do it, as I think it can sound great if used at the right moment.

But you want to know what I hate? How when you watch a bass video on YouTube and some guy is just sitting there, all junk and no face. Like turn your body away from the camera a little bit, dude. I don't wanna see your package! Any other ladies have this issue?

I don't often watch bass videos on YouTube tbh. Prefer to print off a tab and/or work it out for myself. I know, I know, very old school.

So I've been spared this dubious experience, haha 😂

I really should drop in there more often... been neglecting it for a while now. The WhatsApp group's gone quiet, too...

They've been talking about cars quite a lot recently. Not really my bag tbh.

I should start something about kittens and unicorns, haha😂
