Mine has landed. It was a showroom model and Andertons called me to explain this. They offered me a set of strings.
The bass arrived and it’s lovely. It weighs 8.6lb and although I’m not normally a fan I love the burst. There is however a shallow scratch near the nut. No strings were forthcoming either. Andertons have offered me £30 and strings. I’ve asked for a set of LaBella 760s and gone with that. I suspect I can sort the scratch.
The bridge saddles were in orbit! I’ve turned the screws down over 4 turns and there’s more to go.
It sounds lovely, a really woody P bass tone. No noise from the bass either.
I like that the body resonates when you play.

The base instrument is very sound and I’m making no apologies for modding the hell out of it. It’ll be my personal 54P in my 70th year.
So, plans are, bridge, tuners, pickup, electrics and scratch plate. The whole behemoth.
I could set up a mod thread I guess. The pick-up is going to be something quite different.

That looks lovely - your photos look way better than the ones I've seen online.  How can they sell instruments if they're set up like that?  Oh well, money off for you!

Yes, please document what you do with this in a thread, I'd be interested for one.

This has been the BC vibe on quite a few threads lately, which is sad. :(

I walk away all the time, but it was made personal and that I will not tolerate without reply.

Rubbish and wind ur flippin neck in. You wanna diss all those classic tunes that people like you now have to "sample" to make yoiur music right, go ahead. But you will never ever better what came before so wind it in. And with that I bid you good day sir. Tho no doubt youll have the last word. I will not be responding.

I will have the last word, thanks.  How f'n dare you cast aspersions about me.  Please find and quote me where I have ever "diss(ed) all those classic tunes".  "People like me"?  That would require some knowledge of the kind of person I am, of which you have none.  You know the square root of hee haw about me, my music or how it is/was made, but thanks for telling me how crap it is and to pack it in because there's no point.

In fact, everyone go home - all valid music has been already created, you're wasting your time, because @diskwave, the arbiter of taste has decreed it thus.  Have you any idea how stupid you sound?  Read it back - you're being a complete moron, running around in this thread like a bull in a china shop, accusing people of all sorts, argumentatively disagreeing with anyone who has a different opinion to you.  You're forum poison right now.  Why can't you just accept that people having a different opinion to you is not an attempt to invalidate your opinion, which you are more than entitled to have BTW.  You like the old days.  Good for you, I like 'em too.  There are people who disagree with you, and guess what - they're not wrong either.

And that makes for great music does it? Of course not.

It might do.  WTF has gotten into you?  Go take your rose tinted specs off and have a wee snooze, maybe you'll feel better later.

Hmm....looks like most of You pretty much like to get lost as soon as possible 🤪

I got my end away with three groupies, did a few lines of marching powder, drank the bar dry, beat up the bouncer and spent the night in jail...

Nah, but I did stay after getting off the stage to see the band on after us and have a few jars with my bandmates as it was a local gig so no car.  Most times it is just a case of pack up, get the money then head home because we're driving.  We call the trip to the bar for pints of water the "walk of shame"...

I feel you’re setting yourself up for a purchase. Pretty good way to go out though.

Nah, I'm walking away.  It's a frivolity, and if I'm going down, I'd rather it was for something special instead of a curiosity killed the abstinence type situation.

    Nicely colour coordinated!👌

    Fender Tele bass?

I thought I would add a photo of my recent additions.  The Squier Strat I bought from a Charity shop and plays really well. The Squier Precision Bass I got from a well know high street Swap shop. Couldn't leave that behind either!17119864869754429347570020331092.thumb.jpg.38ca47fd4013ba1a1f3877aca734f56e.jpg

    Nice pair.

The bass is a Sire D5, an interpretation of a '51/'54 Precision bass.

Think it cost me £189 either last year or the one before that so if they're no £150 it's a serious bargain.

Saw no reason to "upgrade" anything. Neck is a dream to play, not too chunky but thankfully not too thin. Had two issues.

    1. Slight string hum, that's down to grounding;  either poor contact at the mono saddles (no bare metal) or a saddle has been skipped.

    2. Tone knob needed raised 1mm so it could clear the finish.

It is unclear from the photos I've seen - where does the ball end of the string go?  It's not through body but they just seem to disappear like through body stringing.

  9. Don't worry, someone will be along with completely different advice shortly, forums be foruming!

I'd like to add that you don't need to get two cabs right away - one will be perfectly fine for home use and to be honest, I've done gigs with a single 12" in the early days of building up my rig and it was sufficiently loud.  The second cab gives more headroom (I look at it like it allows you to turn the amp down a bit to achieve the same results and give it an easier life).

Also, whatever cabs you use should be able to handle at least half of the max power of your amp.  So for a 600W amp, you should look at cabs that can handle 300W each.  I'm using a 500W amp and both cabs can handle 400W each so they're never going to be maxed out (they'll only get 250W each).  Matching cabs isn't necessary, but it looks pretty! :D

Here's me looking all colour co-ordinated.  For clarity - the top one is actually a combo so the amp head is built into the case - in case you're wondering where my amp is!

  10. What's your budget?

Are you wanting one cab or go modular with two smaller ones?

You can use one cab or two.  If you're using a single cab, it can be 4 ohm or 8 ohm impedance and you use a single cable from the amp to the cab in either socket.  If you're using two cabs, they must be 8 ohms each (together that make for a 4 ohm total impedance) and you can either use two cables out of the amp, one to each cab, or most cabs have a daisy chain connection so you can run one cable from the amp to the first cab then a cable from the first cab to the second one.

I would not recommend getting a 4 ohm cab unless you're sure you want to go single cab because you will not be able to add a second one later (to this amp at least).  A single 8 ohm cab will result in reduced output from the amp but it's not super significant a loss, you'll still have plenty power for live shows.

I would recommend getting proper speaker cable(s), the wire used is fatter and can carry more power than an instrument cable.  I'd recommend using Speakon connectors rather than jacks if they are available on the amp and cab - it's a more secure and robust connector.

  11. Damn it, this is seriously challenging my gear abstinence, thanks for that, OP! :)

I am very curious to see how good this is.  My suspicious mind says some corners must have been cut to squeeze this much (bound body, flamed maple top (surely will be a veneer at this price, but still, it's an extra step in production), roasted maple neck, individual bridges) into £150.  But I also have faith that someone's just uncovered the bargain of the century.

If the bones are good (fit/finish/fretwork) then it'd be a doddle to change the pickup, wiring, tuners and a somewhat more involved (but far from impossible) task of replacing the bridge(s) if any of those were found to be substandard.

Damn these mind cogs, stop your damn turning!

Thanks guys, the tuner capstan is small on the ibanez mezzo so I guess that's the problem, it started to tighten then unravelled. I only tried 2 strings and they both did the same thing, I cut the length in the usual way so I don't know where to go with this now.

Any ideas on how to fit flats on a 32 scale? Where can I get the right strings?

    Thanks.

Some good info here - https://www.talkbass.com/threads/best-flatwounds-for-medium-scale-bass.1284069/

These might do a job for you - https://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/collections/bass-guitar-string-sets/products/la-bella-4-string-deep-talkin-bass-stainless-steel-flat-wound-45-105-medium-scale-bass-strings?_pos=3&_fid=57403350d&_ss=c

But check the "Ball to taper length" against your bass - measure from where the ball end sits to the E tuner, if that's less than 34.25” (870mm) then these strings will fit just fine because the taper will kick in before the string reaches the tuner and you'll be cutting the bit you're supposed to be cutting.

One of the Seis has just gone in for a refret and I'm not going to have it back before the next gig. Use one of the fan frets, or buy a Cort Space? Decisions, decisions.

Then I decided I'd just use a headed bass instead.

Now this is dedication to the cause!

I bought a power supply so I wouldn't be using my Fuel Tank Junior to just power one pedal, so I guess I'm now out. Well, as of about a week ago.

Is a power supply "bass gear"?  Surely it's a tier 2 failure at best?  I don't think this is a significant enough transgression.  Thoughts everyone?
