I am sooo tempted. Wavering between black/black (black is the new black) and Geedy Lee black/white.

I'm vaguely looking for my next bass, 4-string, twin pickups, passive or active/passive, trad body shape. I'm liking the look of the G&L and wondered if anyone had experience of it. Are Thomann just covering themselves, or it this a real issue. I have a '78-ish Precision and a Yamaha BB350F, and I think the Precision might be nitro (although already has staining on the back from being left alone in a Fender hard case for too long).

The deed is done! I've gone for a TC Classic 450 + BC210. The cab is larger but lighter than the "matching" RS210 (and sounded better to my ears), and still fits in the boot of the car without putting the seats down or removing the parcel shelf. Combined weight is 23kg, compared with the old Trace Elliot combo's 44kg - result!

Hi, OP here. Combophobics will be pleased to hear that I'm heading away from that route, with a current shortlist including the Genz Benz Shuttle, TC Classic and Little Mark heads. GB, Barefaced, and Schroeder cabs all "sound" good on paper. I'll be off to do some serious auditioning shortly.

Phew, I'm glad I started thinking about this in advance! I was sorely tempted by a TecAmp S210 cab in the marketplace here but held fire, even though the seller is quite close. (Such discipline!) I'm really liking the concept of the GB Shuttle, but am having a harder time liking the price tag, especially if I add an extension cab. I'm not still not sure about my budget but can clearly see that £1K is easier to spend than £500!

Thanks for the responses all... a full service is now at the top of my shopping list. I also had a look at the list of recommended luthiers in the wiki and see there are a couple in Croydon, through which I pass regularly, so I'll be on the blower on Tuesday. Re strings, in time I'm planning to get something with P/J config as my main bass, and then put flats on this one for that classic sound. At the moment it's the P - great sound, unruly beast - and a Hohner B2 V which I picked up aeons ago to see if a 5-string was for me - it wasn't. That one is however really smooth to play (as a 4-string with a 34-inch thumb-rest) but sounds like a duck blowing its nose.

Hi Guys, I've been playing for a few months after a massive layoff during which I sold most of my gear. I kept hold of a late-70s Precision, bought S/H in the early 80s, which I hardly ever used when I was gigging. My main bass back then was a Wal. Yes I was mad to sell it and I'd love to be able to get another but circumstances dictate otherwise! I love the sound the Precision makes but it's always been a bit of brute to play, as the action needs to be painfully high to stop the strings rattling. Neck relief is set up fine as per the guide on the Fender website, i.e. around 0.03mm at the 8th fret. Looking beyond screwdriver-and-allen-key territory, I'm now wondering about the nut - see pics. The nut is obviously worn, but is too much? The G string sits about 1mm over the fretboard at the nut. It's strung with 040-095s. What do you think? Do you have any recommendations for a trusted tech guy who could look at it? I'm based in Bromley (SE London/Kent). Cheers! Richard

Hi all and thanks for the input. I'm now leaning towards a 2x10 or a 1x12. The Promethean looks amazing but hearing would be believing. I'm not convinced that there'd be many situations where, if was going to get a 1x10 extension, I would need to go with just the 1x10 combo - the 2x10 combo wouldn't be much more of a burden. Interestingly it's also got me thinking about head + cab rather than combo. Hitherto I've always considered the combo the obvious route but it ain't necessarily so. I think amps have definitely got smaller/lighter during my sabbatical. Re. my requirements, it's all a bit fuzzy at the moment: it's just me and my Fender Rumble 15 at the moment, but I hope to be out and about in the New Year, playting just about anything (except maybe thrash) but probably not at ear-bleeding volumes. The Markbass combo looks great but I don't want to be impulsive! Cheers Richard

Hi All, After selling most of my gear and not playing for ages, I'm now window-shopping with a view to getting a giggable combo. Back in the day (1980s) I used a Trace Elliot 1115. [url="http://www.gbaudio.co.uk/data/te1115.htm"]Younger readers click here[/url]. That was 150w into 1x15, and delivered more than enough power. It replaced a Carlsbro Cobra (60w into 1x12, I think), which wasn't enough! My fantasy is that technology has progressed in the meantime and that now a smaller, lighter 1x12 combo might suit me. As I'm now older and weaker I'd love to find what I need in a more portable package - something like this little Hartke [url="http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=30&brandID=3"]http://www.samsontech.com/products/product...0&brandID=3[/url]. (An if the specs on the interweb are to believed, the corresponding 1x15 is still only 1/2 the weight of the Trace.) What do you think? Cheers Richard

I went for Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats, as they seem to have a lot of fans here. Fortuitously they arrived the same day as the bass, and I'm a happy bunny with mwah to spare!

I tried a Cort and liked it a lot - even tho' it was active, and the guy in the shop couldn't tell me what the switch did :-O The styling's a bit too extreme for my liking though. And if the BB424 has replaced the BB414, maybe that means that a BB624 is around the corner... although the BB614 is active and pricier :-( (My problem with actives is when I've had them in the past I've spent a long time fiddling and not getting what I want.)
