  1. Ska band's gig next Saturday is at a Conservative Club. Hmm, well a payday's a payday I suppose. Anyway... I've bought a special shirt for the occasion.

  2. Ernie Ball Stainless flats for 5 string bass - 25 squids on Amazon. And they sound marvellous.

I bought some anyway...  I can't see them being that cheap when I actually do need some.

  3. Flightradar is so cool. I've just watched some in-flight refuelling taking place over the North Sea.

It's not usually possible to see the fast jets doing operational stuff or operational traiing, at least for me.  But if you want to watch fast-jet training, try west Texas (T-38s) and Snowdownia (Hawks, mostly from Valley).  Sometimes you can see the electronic targets over the North Sea, but not often the aircraft flying interceptions.

Sometimes you get exotic stuff too.  Hurricane hunters (mostly P-3s) over the Caribbean).  NATO AWACS and reconnaissance aircraft over Bulgaria.  Spitfires, Mustangs, SAAB Tunnan.  The Canadian Lancaster when it came to the UK via Iceland.

Worth also watching the firefighters; water bombers and spotting aircraft.

  5. How much gear is too much?

    Asking for a friend.....

  6. I never realised how useful fret markers on the side of the neck were until I played a bass without them.  Shortscale too.  I sound like Les Dawson playing the piano.

I have a Yamaha fretless; for some reason they seem never to have understood that the dot position needs to change on fretless.   I use black tape with Tippex dots on it :)

  8. In the entirely hypothetical case of a Basschatter who does NOT own an iPhone, exactly how excited does the panel believe that Basschatter should be about tonight's mega-upgrade?

Personally, I'm filing this under "a good day to bury bad news".

I own an iPhone, but I have never tried to use BC with it.  Just as well, the place costs me far too much money already... :D

  9. TC SpectraComp bricked:

Failed to update firmware two times, third time lights out. I now have a very small door stop.

  10. I am rather old to have discovered bass guitar, but I can't do much about that now, I'm hooked. I have a Fender Mustang which I have owned for 5 weeks and I love. I am most excited to discover how great it feels to play with two fingers on my strumming hand. I have also discovered that playing a sound or phrase that cuts through the other members of the band in harmony is thrilling. Every time.

  13. Waiting for the call after an audition (on lead guitar) this afternoon. Did everything I could think of to make it work in my favour - learned more songs than they asked for, spent time on getting the sounds right, got there early, did some BVs. I defo want the gig (1 year dep slot) - just have to be patient now.

  14. Going to try out BEAD tuning on my Kiloton, because I’m too tight to buy a 5er.

Hm.  Wondering if you might be OK tuning the whole lot down a semitone...  give you that low Bb.

I did this using the bottom four strings of a five-string set, on a Harley Benton fretless.  Works well, and it does what I want it to.  (Plus, the G string on my fivers tends to sound tinny.)

  19. Our drummer just sent us a message today; he won't be able to come to any more rehearsals, not for several months anyway.  He left our WhatsApp group and refused to give an explanation.

He has been a rock for the last 2 years, always dependable and really committed, so this is all out of the blue.  I suspect he may have health or family problems.  He doesn't want to talk to me now but he did say "Give me time".

I'm gutted about the band collapsing and also concerned for my friend.  It's been a bad day.

Doesn't sound good.  He's obviously in some sort of bind.  Good luck to you both.

  20. There's a first. We walked away from a gig without playing a note as the pub thought we had too many amps (we are a 5 piece) and our amps looked "too loud". We hadn't even plugged in or fully set up. When they asked us to lose a band member or play after 10pm when their restaurant was closed, we packed our gear and left. Lord Raglan in Wokingham, for the record. My advice: never accept a gig there

  21. When you order la Bella 760fs and they arrive a day early you get excited to get them on, the disappointment when you open the parcel and they’ve sent you la Bella 760fs-‘m’ 😞

    Luckily I didn’t open the string packet…
