1.
Best fun I ever had was with a Rory Gallagher trio tribute. Used a beat up old Gherson jazz through lots of valves and a 1x15 cab. Lovely growly tone and loved playing around with dynamics and bouncing off the drummers ideas. Hope your project takes off mate and if I was local I'd be jumping at the chance to do this sort of thing! Truckstop
That's exactly what I'm talking about! Dr Stingray, I play a Strat for this. I also have a tele, a J45 and a Les Paul jr. (and a P bass) but I wouldn't dream of using those guitars for this, because they would be the wrong instruments for the job. I know Hendrix sometimes used other guitars but I am trying to go for certain aesthetic. I'm not going to wear fancy dress or set my guitar on fire, it is supposed to be about the playing which I certainly am trying to make authentic. No age limit BTW. Pino is 54, doesn't bother John Mayer or the audiences. Honestly I'm not trying to tell anyone what kind of instrument they should play, just that if you audition for this with a 5 string, fretless or a Warwick we are almost guaranteed to have incompatible ideas. I am speaking from experience and I want to narrow it down before we actually get to playing together. Thanks a lot for all the encouragement as well guys, means a lot.
 2. Thanks chaps, good to know the ad is being seen by some good players. No offence to the above excluded groups! I just know what will and what won't work for this particular project.
 3. Guitarist looking to form a serious power trio a la Hendrix, John Mayer trio etc. I'm looking for a P or J (specifically) player with a vintage style rig and strong melodic blues sense. Hopefully a Noel Redding, Billy Cox, Pino Palladino, JPJ fan. Planning to start with Hendrix and John Mayer Trio covers and take it from there. My aim is NOT to create a 60s tribute act, a wedding band or a local pub covers band. Just a very, very good power trio. Please, no weekend warriors, slappers, and no Stingrays or Warwicks please. I am looking for an accomplished Fender Jazz or Precision player. Thanks for reading, I hope to hear from you! Martin www.martinrawlins.net
 4. Well to update the thread, unfortunately I never did get the machine heads on my Squier. The process of removing the Squier bushings started to crack the lacquer on the headstock so I had to stop. The lacquer was evidently still wet when Squier fitted the metalwork... a word of warning to anyone else. Thankfully the crack is not too visible but I'm not sure what to do with these parts now. Sell them I guess... shame.
 5. Hi Mark, is the bass neck heavy at all, how's the balance on a strap? Martin
 6.
That new PG does look a lot nicer. Im hoping to order a CV P tomorrow and will also need to change the PG. Did you find out if the standard MIM PG would fit? It looks like it should. I had the PG off my MIA and also my HW-one and they both fit my CV Jazz, but i need one that doesn't have the truss rod cut out and the MIM looks ideal. Im also considering a black PG but i would have to see the CV P in the flesh first to see if that would work. Love the sound clip as well.
Thanks Dave, not sure about the MIM, the only hunch I had to go on was a rumour about the 62 reissue plate. I took a risk and it paid off. Let us know how you get on!
 7.
Hmmm ... I wonder if that works for the Jazz too?
Let us know if you find out ;-) By the way here is an improvised jam I just put down for someone who was asking for a sound example of this bass with the 62RI pickup (and orange drop cap). Hope you like it! http://soundcloud.com/martin_rawlins/squie...h-fender-pickup
 8.
Have I understood correctly? A US 62 P reissue guard fits a Squier CV 60s P?
Yes, like a glove!
 9.
I played one of these the other day, really nice bass, great neck. Half tempted to buy it. Are the original pups no good?
Hi Stinson, yes the neck is absolutely stunning. I'm still in awe of it because not only is the feel amazing but the finish and grain are also beautiful. The stock pickups were fine, but following the sale of my 75 RI Jazz I had a very decent budget to spend on a bass. I originally wanted a 62 RI or an original 70's Fender but I ended up preferring the feel of the Squier after a few days in London trying many Precisions both vintage and new. So I just felt the Squier deserved posh cosmetics and electronics. I use the bass for recording so I wanted an industry standard "vintage" pickup and reliable pots and electronics. I did a bit (actually a lot) of research on the Pino Palladino sig and tried to get as close as possible to that spec.
 10. Hi guys So the scratchplate and shield arrived yesterday from Darren Riley- thanks again Jon and everyone else for your contributions. The Fender 62 RI scratchplate fits the Squier CV perfectly and looks so much classier! I also installed a 62 RI pickup, CTS audio taper pots, a switchcraft jack and period correct knobs to complete the pimping. Here are the before and after shots:
 11. Yeah that's what I'm saying, there are bits of metal protruding from the back of the flat tuner plate which prevents it from sitting flat against the headstock rear. Madison Music say you should just be able to screw the machine heads in and the protruding tags (about 2mm) will crush themselves into the wood. I'd really like to know if anyone else has these dents in their Fender bass when they remove a machine head, or not.
They should just pop in, of course the mounting screws are in different places so you may want to drill those out, to get them started. A very thin bit of course, and not too deep!
12. Here is Madison Music's response: "The metal on the bottom of the plate is to hold the shaft. If your installing them on a real vintage guitar I would use them the way they are. I use hundreds of these a year on our custom built guitars. The metal that hold the shaft has never been a big deal. Usually they will imprint themselfs into the wood naturally by tightening the tuner. Let me know if you have any troubles." So it seems no extra routing is necessary. Can anyone confirm this?
 13. Heh, yes they are pretty, you can specify the amount of ageing you want as well. Now to get them on the bass!
Nice... I would like to fit those on my MiM p... I put a set of Wilkos on but I would like the vintage vibe.
