To the OP: I think there's a romance to being a full time pro musician. But the reality I suspect is that it's often gruelling, bloody hard work, with anti-social hours. Albeit, if it's something we love, it can be some of the best gruelling bloody-hard work we ever spend our time doing.

Exactly this 👏 . I never said that being a full time musician it's easier than a 9 to 5 jobs . To me it would be definitely more rewarding, even if it means working out if hours or weekend etc. I spend 8 hours a day 9 to 5 wondering what it would be like to actually play music full time instead of sitting in front of a desk in meaningless job

  2. So not many people do it as a living as I can see.

My dream of becoming a full time musician is crushed by you basschatters 😅.

I understand the long hours and hard work which I don't mind( spent 15 years of my 40 in kitchens ).as for earnings I would need around 2k to 2.5k(roughly 30k a year)  a month  to be comfortable and as I can see its not the easiest. In tge past I used to be a signed musician and have never actually made alot of money from it but cost of living etc was different and had no family commitments, but I have managed to collect alot of stuff to actually open a music studio which is something I had in mind for a bit alongside playing live. Perhaps is time for me to find a different job and then build from thst by playing weekends etc.

It's actually really sad that so many of us actually struggle to play bass for a living

We go about 2 grand a gig for the 5 of us, so 400 snifters apiece.

When we do gig we can get the top cash, but getting enough gigs to live on might be tricky, certainly round these parts.

You'd need 2 or 3 a week minimum at those rates to earn enough coin to live on, and 5 or 6 to be comfortable and I can't see there's enough demand for it.

Wow that is actually good but totally understand that it's not the easiest thing to do nowadays. I live in South Devon so loads of weddings around this side and I guess I could get couple of gig playing few hotels .

Maybe the question is more, do you have an opportunity to get into an existing band? Or are you looking to start one? Very different scenarios, earnings-wise...

Thank you for your reply Joe

Good question and to be honest either way. I guess the earning scenario is that a new band charges less while the established one will charge more right?

  6. Hey guys ,

I have reached a point where I'm really unhappy career wise and wish to switch. I was wondering how many of you make a living playing in function bands for weddings parties etc? Any advice ? Does it take a long time to be established ? I'm sure there are loads of bands out there and wwlanted some advices(especially from those who make a living out of it)on what makes you stand out

Glad to hear you’re recovering btw!

Get your “online” presence out there.

Videos of yourself playing, something about yourself, links to any music/videos you’d be happy for others to view (and you have permission to share) then put it all on YouTube, FB, Instagram, etc. with # to genre/location/etc.

The drummer I’ve worked with most over the past few years did exactly that.

She videoed herself doing some covers, with fairly lights on her kit (that was her only gimmick). The Darkness were forwarded a link of her cover of one of their songs, they liked her playing, and she ended up touring and recording with them, and now is incredibly busy.

Self promotion, using social media is now the “postcard in a guitar shop” or ad in melody maker.

    Best of luck.

    Thank you mate !!

Health always comes first. That sounds absolutely amazing and crazy at the same time . Sometimes all you need is a bit of luck( obviously your friend put a lot of effort ) . I will be doing the same

    Thanks for the advice guys

You don’t say where you’re based, which will make a difference to opportunities.

But, my advice is to go out and network in the physical world. Go to gigs, jam nights, local festivals etc. Talk to people, make yourself known. Work your ‘black book’ of contacts if you have one. My experience is that good slots with bands that are already gigging and/or recording rarely make it to adverts. Places are filled on word-of-mouth or personally known players.

Ahah sorry. I'm in South Devon but ad I have said above I don't mind commuting ( actually an excuse to get out of tge house mire often) . I have been out of the loop a bit and also moved since when I used to play live form York to south Devon so obviously that don't help, hence I was asking if there is a platform online and I have not notice or didn't know about.  The old networking always seems to have the result out of it all

Other than ones I was part of from the get go, I joined all of my bands by answering or posting ads on Gumtree. I found it to be much better than the other solutions. Plus it's free. My location might help though. There is always something going on in Bristol!

Thank you ! I don't ming commuting.  Did that with previous band . Had to travel 1.5 hours to get to rehearsal.  Bristol is a great place to be for sure

  10. After( finally) few years I feel I'm ready to start to gig again. I had some health issues that stopped but feeling as good as new.

I was wonder9bg where is the best online place to look for a band or session work ? Tried join my band and bandmix but there is nothing really that attracts my attention . Looking for something a bit more serious in someway.  Any tips, tricks, advices?

    Thank you in advance

Always loved these basses, but the 19mm spacing and the fact I was always expecting the top horn to snap off put me off a bit.

Beautiful bass, hope you decide to keep it.

Bridge can be adjusted. I think I have got at 18mm atm( can't remember really but I can measure it ) . The top horn is solid as rock , not sure what would you have to do to snap it
