Total Watts

1. Hi Yes they were happy days. I remember making speaker cabs and buying amps etc and doing a lot of experimenting with sounds, unlike nowadays where you just get the credit card out and buy them. The FAL bin had very good projection and seemed to give very good acoustic compression and was more effective than the electronic compression used now, and as you say very loud Alan
2. Hi They did apparantley but I was more into bass playing. I got one for free that had been garaged for years and hooked it up to a Sound City 120 Watt Valve Guitar head ( the Pre Hi-Watt era) and it sounded brilliant, I let it go along with the Amp and now regret it and would like to re-visit the sound hence my request. I would like to get a sound city as well and there seem to be a few advertised. I did attach a Word doc but this seems to be left in the ether somewhere. Google has some images come up if you type Furturistic Aids Ltd into the search box. Did you have anything to do with FAL? ALan
3. Hi Used to have a FAL 100w Bass Bin( or Disco Bins which I think they originally) and it was awesome. I think they came in pairs for PA use. I am on the look out for another so if you hear anything ?
4. As already said a caravan / leisure battery and a pure sign wave inverter with plenty of headroom wattage wise, ensures a good signal for the gear. Most towns are happy for buskers ( I live in Poole Dorset ), but you have to move on after about an hour. Some dont like amps others are OK as long as noise levels are kept reasonable. Best of luck Alan
5. Hi Great to be back. I am looking for a FAL Bass Bin ( or Disco Bin), I used to have one and the sound was awesome. Does anyone know of one going that is intact? Please find attached word doc for reference. Alan
6. HI All Thanks for your help,I will spend th money :-) Alan
7. Hi you BassHeads I have a peavey 100 watt valve head into an ashdown cab I use for gigs etc. I love the hard sound a valve guitar head gives for bass. I do a bit of slapping which is fine but it is proving difficult to control the popping as it tends to distort. I use a behringer limiter (no laughing) which works fine but to control the peaks of popping it either pushes it right down or doesnt quite do the job of 'Cleaning' I use a Warwick streamer active 4 string bass with elites, which have always given a good clean piano sound. Have any of you used pedals /FXs etc to control slap and pop and if so which ones?
8.
I too have the Distressor. It's the only compressor I've ever got on with. I was trying over and again to find why people swear by compressors... as all they apperaed to do was as stated above, take away dynamics. But now I find that the settings I'm using on the Distressor give me no loss of dynamics, and it's barely even there, but it does just tidy up my playing a little. (it's no substitute for perfect fingering tho, ...but then I'm far from perfect.) The key for me is to have so little noticable compression that I can forget it's there. Mind you £1000 plus, is a lot of money to have something in the chain which I can't detect 99.999% of the time, I guess. All other compressors I tried were basically, pants tho.
Hi Has anyone tried rack mounts such as the Aleis 3060 or similar compressors?
9.
For those that can make it. I've gone ahead and booked a venue/date as it seemed the only way to get a bash "going". If I'm there by myself, I'll win all the raffles prizes..! 11th July 2-5 p.m In Shaftesbury. Map link below. Shaftesbury Christian Centre, Christies Lane, Shaftesbury SP7 8PH Venue is free (Big low ceiling hall), free parking, free tea & coffee in a nice coffee bar area, bogs, Tesco over the road, nice pubs in town and Gold Hill is worth a visit. Be nice to give both some dosh for their time, so maybe a small contribution from those that attend? I'll attempt to extract some goodies from music retailers for a raffle in aid of basschat. If anyone is coming that works in shops around and about the dorset/wilts/somerset/hants area please feel free to badger the owners for some freebies. If you could let me know who's able to come, then I can make a list and have an idea of numbers. Bring your gear (the weird and the wonderful) and your plectrums/fingers and we'll have some fun, should be a grin. John
I will try and get there Alan POOLE
10.
Those Behringer compressors are pretty good actually, certainly better than a lot of people judging on name rather than sound give them credit for.* I'd hesitate to upgrade from them unless you went for something significantly more costly (like the focusrite), or something less transparent (they're not transparent by studio standards but are compared to bass pedals!). The optical compression on the Aphex Exciter units, for example, is a very 'warm' sounding compression that really bigs up the bass end, very different to a studio rack compressor. *The caveat is I haven't heard the more recent Behringer models, only the ones from the early 2000s. But they were very usable.
I use a fairly new behringer limiter for slapping and not problem with it at all. I have tried other compressors /limiters with no better results. Justg because its cheaper doesnt mean its rubbish. Even if you dont like it you have only spent 20 quid instead of 70 or so.
