When my talent level demands it, I’ll shift to a five. Luckily I think I’m safe until 2351.

I actually find it easier to play a 5-string now. All the notes are right there, 2 octaves within 5 frets, going back to 4 feels a bit like when my dad removed the stabilisers from mi bicycle.

I know you won't believe me, just like I would not have believed it myself not that long ago. :D

(Edited as I've just seen what this thread is actually about!)

I have three (active versions!) One was converted to fretless (Rotosound Swing Bass), one had the neck stripped, slimmed and oiled (GHS Brite Flats)and the third is all original (Ernie Ball Slinky).  All purchased in 2023 (£350, £380 and £400).  I really love these basses - more than my EBMM 3-band, Ric 4001, USA Fender P and various 'lesser' basses.  The only other bass that gets a look in is my Hofner Club.

I'm thinking of adding an active/passive switch to no.3.

If you can pick one up at a good price, don't hesitate.  Ignore the funky finish (which I like), and don't sweat about stripping the neck if you don't like the sprayed finish.  For the price of a budget bass you'll have one of the best basses around (and you won't have to worry about dinging it!

When our civilisation falls and it all becomes Mad Max-esque... My bass would be an EBMM SUB. It can be used as a weapon, and it will sound great ;)

I had an early SUB5 that I regret so much selling... The neck was amazing. But idiot me was not into 5 strings yet 🙄😄

The line 6 systems seem good for the price but Iv been told to steer clear of them if you have an active bass.

Anybody can say whatever they want, and a lot of people talk out of their rear ends.

Been using Line6 wireless since 2009 with mostly active basses. I see them in use by a wide range of people playing a wide range of instruments. You'll be fine.

Are you being serious?  It was clearly a parody of the very rude user from earlier today telling me to wind my neck in.  I took zero offence to it.

That's how I read it too, that @Supernaut was bringing some lighter atmosphere by mocking the aforementioned rude user. :)

That what i meant...they could easily been made in Estonia.

The link I posted earlier suggests the company is from Slovenia, where maybe or maybe not they assemble the instruments, which come from Asia.

Who wants a 42mm nut? Seriously.

Apart from that and the after thought headstock, I kinda like the white.

Me, for example, I don't want anything narrower than that!

When I ordered my first Maruszczyk I had to insist on 43mm, despite the insistence by them that 40-41mm is plenty. :D My Precision at the time was 45mm!

New Bass Day yesterday, a Harley Benton JP-45OP 4 string bass in a Natural finish, bought from Paul @Shepster8316 on Basschat. Fantastic bass that looks and sounds incredible and plays beauifully, the neck is a dream to play. Paul had set up the bass perfect with a low action, don't know how HB could produce such a killer bass for so little money !!, the roasted maple neck and fret board is stunning 😍. See pics below 🎸👍😃

That line of basses are HB's secret weapon in my opinion. I've got both the JJ and the JP in 5-string and I would expect them to cost 3x as much, easily.

  8. Rickenbacker - because John Hall

Wetherspoons - because of Timmy, and because why would I do that to myself anyway?

Scottish Power - redefining 'useless' in incredibly imaginative ways

SSE - useless as above, but also a bit dumb... it worked out great when they refused my money despite my insistence, but it could have gone the other way just as easily... I got caught in a surreal situation where my supplier (SSE) thought I had ceased to be their customer and moved to Eon. To cut the story EXTREMELY SHORT, as it wasn't as simple as it sounds oh no!, Eon knew nothing about me and according to them they had never dealt with my address or myself, ever. The whole thing took a couple of months to come to some semblance of resolution: according to SSE I ceased to be their customer for a period of X weeks, I forget the number, but I returned. So the £161 or so from the gap due to the time they considered I wasn't their customer, was not theirs and they refunded me. I didn't owe them that money, they said, I wasn't their customer then, they insisted.

Meanwhile, Eon was sitting down listening, vaguely amused... and they just stood up and left, shaking their head. Thank you SSE for the £161, but you showed me that should I have a problem where I'm losing money, I'd be fooked, and for that reason, I'm out.

    Hewlett Packard - frustratingly quirky

I was going to say Apple as I've been very much anti-Mac since around 1990 for most of the reasons already mentioned... but I have an existential problem: they make a few things VERY very well, and (I feel dirty) I have been considering giving them my money recently.

Cillit Bang - because of the annoying TV guy...

UKMail - the fact they're still 'functioning' amazes me. I could write a book with my dealings with that (spit) company. But it would be an extremely boring book that nobody in their right mind would buy

When my Tascam audio interface would no longer work after I updated the OS on my laptop, I vowed to never buy anything made by tascam again. I then bought an interface made by Native Instruments. After a few years this too was no longer supported after an OS update so NI was added to my sh1tlist.

It sounds to me like it's the OS you need to ditch! :D

I’ve got TI flats on a custom jazz, and Galli Synthesis strings on a standard jazz. Have you tried the Galli strings? Because TI’s after a year of playing is how I would describe them. They have a nylon core which I think gives them a slightly duller tone.

No, I've never tried them. I'll keep that in mind, your description sounds very appealing thank you 🙂

When I fit a new set I keep the played in set for just that purpose.

    Same.

I once broke a G-string in a well used stainless steel roundwound set, and quickly installed a fresh G string. It wasn't a good sound. That's when I started saving a previously used set for this kind of situations.

You’re right, it’s too weird for words. I just buy strings that sound the way I want in first place. There’s plenty of flats out there that don’t need deadening out the packet. If that’s what you want, try the Galli synthesis flats.

Tell me where I can get flats that sound like TI Jazz Flats after a year or so of playing ;)

I'll save you time: you can't. That's just one example I have experience of. Sometimes people look for ways to accelerate the process and get to that sweet spot faster, makes sense to me. I just use them and eventually they'll get there, between the bass' tone controls and/or a bridge mute I get close 'enough for rock'n'roll', but I see why someone would just want to get there.

It's not something we've tied doing yet as we've only had the chance to use it once in a "technical rehearsal" to set the thing up. But what you can do is record a soundcheck.  All things being equal (such as guitar levels, drum mics positioned correctly etc) you could rock up to a venue, set up the PA and soundcheck to set eq for the room without actually playing an instrument!

    That's not a bad idea!

So, it's a done deal. Latest message from drummer: "Thanks for looking into things Steve. I’ve built a few PAs with IEMs in them so I’ve got it buddy. Just trying to work out the most cost effective architecture to make it works for us so we can all opt in or out of using them. [Myself and guitarist] will [pay for it] between us. If you could just check your Di out and let me know what type of plug it needs I can take it from there." Currently, I don't use the DI on my head. Not sure I want the added complexity and faff of that.

It's literally just a cable from the amp's DI to the mixer, you don't need to do anything else if you don't want to go IEM. You carry on as normal, but they can get your bass in their IEMs, nothing more complicated or sinister than that..

One of my band's guitarists has just bought an Allen & Heath CQ18t. Not had the chance to play with it yet but I've been exploring the tablet and phone apps, as well as reading up on the specs and it looks darn useful and easy to use.

It's similar in design to the X-Air and X18 in that it's a combined wifi-enabled stagebox with a touch screen, with 6 aux send for personal monitor mixes, not to mention built in effects.

One of the issues many X-Air owners have is the wifi is a bit unreliable and resort to using third-party routers. Allegedly the A&H router is more reliable.

There's also apps for both iOS and Android, for mixing and personal monitoring, as well as windows and mac.

I know it costs more than the Behringer, but it might be worth a look anyway.

    Hi Greg! :)

You are right, it seems like the built-in router is not reliable and I've heard similar stories about some other mixers (not all!). However an external router doesn't cost much and it'll all be in a rack case.

That A&H mixer looks really cool! It's a bit more expensive but it has a touch screen already and it looks like it can record each channel in a separate track for processing later, directly on the mixer rather than having to plug in a laptop to it...

Hmmm... Something to think about, it definitely seems more user friendly. Thank you for the heads up, I would not have thought of this one if you hadn't mentioned it!

I have an XR12. I use a Nokia T20, and have an elderly Huawei 10" tablet as backup. At the last gig, I started losing connection with the 5.8GHz router I was using, so I switched to the XR12's internal wifi for the rest of the gig, which worked fine.

Somehow I missed the replies to my post... and guess what? I've got a Nokia T21 now :)

Refurbished from Nokia directly, £107 total. It would be rude to pass it ;)

I don't have the XR18 yet but I have been playing a bit with the apps. Mix Station looks great, and when I found it wasn't free I was "of course, here we go" but it was something like a fiver or so, well worth it, although it's going to take me a while to figure things out. The XAir app seems a bit simpler at least for the basic functions, it would be perfect for each person to adjust their own monitor mix with it.

I play round wound on electric bass, just got a double bass with flat wounds , should I use same type strings on electric bass as upright, why or why not?

Personally, I'd be looking for different sounds from those different types of instrument... so I don't see a reason why the strings should be of similar construction. They're independent.

No median would be the average that increases most from inequality. Still, not a discussion for this thread although I do believe that’s a reason why there’s a market for £5k+ basses.

Hmm, growing inequality in the form of the top % earning more, relatively, means that the average will be pushed up a bit, but the median will likely remain similar or even decrease, no?
