  1. Folks, please if you will keep your fingers crossed for my sister in law today... currently under the brain surgeon's knife to remove a tumour. 🤞🏼

  2. Please keep your fingers crossed for my cat. Having ultrasound on a big lump. :(

Really sorry to hear that. It's such a hard decision, and knowing it was the best thing to do never takes away the pain. :(

      My condolences.

      I agree with @Sibob

I had both a LMT800 and a LM3. The LMT800 was not bad at all, but I liked the LM3 better. Since I didn't notice the LMT800 being much louder, I sold it and kept the LM3.

  4. And the Prosteels are off, bl@!dy dreadful things, as soon as I put them on half my midrange vanished, curiousity got the better of me and it didn't pay off.

Fresh set of Rotosounds on and wow the Rotos sound so much better, the growl is back and I actually have other frequencies besides low bass and high treble.

I had the ProSteels a while ago. I remember feeling the same way initially, but because I rarely like fresh steels in particular, I waited a bit. Once they're used a bit they sound a lot better, and the mid-scoop goes away. In my opinion they were not as good as DR Fat Beams but after 2-3 weeks of regular use they are in the same ballpark.

  5. GAS - I'm tempted by a Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass IV that I've found for sale, what do you think, shall I go for it?

I slap... and I never liked 'slap switches' :D

Maybe you can rewire it and turn the switch into a parallel/series switch. Jazz pickups in series are a seriously nice option to have.

I had the 5 string version. It sounded pretty good!

  8. Rapidly approaching the point in lockdown where I want to sell a bass just so I can buy a new toy 😂

I sold a car during the lock down, that's how I bought so many toys since 😛

Too much time spent at the computer, too many temptations...

  9. CoronaVirus Gear Sale? - How many of you are considering or are already selling bass gear because of financial losses incurred by not being able to work?

    1. mcnach

      mcnach

Yeah, not a good time to sell. I was about to sell my Audi A3 just before things got complicated... and looking at the market, there's a lot selling but I see the same things again and again, I don't think there's many people buying.

Not yet, but it's a possibility. It's very likely that we'll struggle to gig with the frequency we used to, and I was already getting a little 'bored' with a lot of the gigs we used to do, so I'm rethinking my 'musical future', to spend more time writing and recording with others and less live stuff (certainly fewer projects), and switching my attention more to other activities that are more financially useful to me (computer based)...

I've already completely rearranged my 'home office' to be more work and a lot less music, as I'm working from home these days. I think I might sell a bass or two and cabs that I don't need and put a fridge and a nice espresso machine in the room instead...

I had a good run, but I think I want to spend more time visiting family and travelling when I have proper holidays, and work more from home.

  11. Srsly though why do people keep trying to steal my cable? Is there a decent system for labelling them? grrr.

    1. mcnach

      mcnach

I got tired of that, so my cables are all coloured now.

  12. My Trans-themed MJT-aged Bass arrived. Assembly begins: Allparts neck’s bolted on w/threaded inserts, Seymour Duncan pups are my go-to for most builds. If all goes well I’ll be playing it for the 1st time on the 12th @diyspace4london,

  14. What do you think guys? Does bass cab with 2x12 without tweeter will be a good solution? 2 12'' can do the job without a tweeter ? (Eminence Beta 12A) Could you advice me some "boutique" high end stuff? I don't wanna another "factory" speaker. Thanks.

      mcnach

I have no tweeters anymore. I used to think that having extended frequency response was desirable because... you can always remove it if you don't want it, right? But I found that quite often the tweeter just added harshness too easily. The best one I had personal experience of was the Barefaced BigBaby 2 (single 12", but they make a 2x12 version too). The attenuation control worked very well and even full on was not harsh. So there are some cabs out there that work well. But in the end I found I just don't need to go that high. My main cabs roll off at 7 KHz and they have plenty top end that still doesn't get fizzy if I add overdrive.

So, no, I don't think you need tweeters. Of course, some people love them so it depends on what you're after, but for what it's worth I am not into dark 'old school' sounds. I like versatility, mix fingerstyle/pick/slap and can go quite bright at times, and I can get all that without tweeters.

  15. Think I've found the pickup config I like most. Either P or J but with a big ol Humbucker at the bridge. Just works for me

    1. mcnach

      mcnach

Yup, a big bridge humbucker is where it's at. Paired with a P, for me.

  18. Taking the pickguard off my VM Jazz and was just thinking how nice it would be without one at all... then discover the big hole in the body underneath! 😆

      mcnach

@neilp The fretless one came without a pickguard originally, so the routing for the neck pickup was clean.
