  1. For sale   Carvin BX 500 work horse - NOW SOLD

I have seen an Amp i want so chancing the sale of this to acquire it.  I bought this to power my two 4 ohm cabs. This is the second Carvin amp i have owned and find them to be the most flexible for the working bass player.

You get 4 bands of EQ with two Para mids. +  graphic. On top of that you have a contour (flat/scoop). It's American and they like some edge so you have a drive control.  A one knob Compressor.  Switches for mute, active and to switch the graphic. On the back you get dual Speakon/jack sockets, effects loop, tuner out, DI with ground lift. push buttons for Valve bypass, and 4/2ohm output selection. The amp automatically runs on voltage from 120< 240 volt.   It is about 30% wider than a Markbass but weighs the same and has more features. This will come in a computer bag i used to transport it.

I find it easier to hide wrong notes on a five string as well. The low notes are not quite as distinct as higher ones and I can get away with murder! 😂

Thats funny, another local bass player i know in jazz circles always said when lost or haven't a clue stay low and play D. why D I don't know he had something there.

I was exclusively 5 string for a long time - at least 10 years. Playing jazz and with transposing instruments that B string was really useful.

funny that!  for jazz jams and that real book/ iRealpro situation, I would also take a five so I have extra notes available to fumble my way out of awkward situations 😄 mmmm, still more practice required on the 4 i think.

  6. Below is Soulful Strut I found myself having to sight read the other night, in a big band and thinking what i have written is never going to fit with what the horns are doing but of course it did. I  recognised the tune but not the artists.

Two guys from Chicago Mr Young and Holt, a bass player and Drummer and have found myself catching on their back catalogues all week - enjoy.

Below Soulful Strut hit from 68,   and an instructional video I found below that,

  7. I now try to maintain swapping between the 4 & 5's now having been cornered before, but each are finding their place in different environments, My Schack for rock /pop P bass with flats for jazz but then I'll turn up with the Pbass on a big band rehearsal and they are playing funky numbers or tricky stuff needing an extended range, so don't always get it right. So now if dep-ing I often will take my Marleaux Mbass to cover what ever comes up.  But i am definately enjoying the 4's more and have gas for another 😁

  8. Going back to a 4 string bass

There have been many posts on this site asking when and how someone should go to a 5 string bass. I have contributed to many of these chats, as I have been solely on 5 strings for nearly 30 years. But come Covid and lock down I decided I wanted another Fender P bass having started on a 77 P.  Tempted by a lovely second hand custom shop 62 relic at a good price, I jumped in. I then realised I had learnt all my function band licks on a 5 and my muscle memory and playing pasterns were firmly embedded on the 5 string bass. So I set about playing through my big band jazz numbers on the four, having installed a set of flats. I should say here we did pack up our function band just before covid so this gap gave me the time to accustom myself without too much pressure.  I am now using my newly acquired 4 strings, yes a second one arrived last year due to Basschat GAS,  and have now joined a rock band where my Swamp Ash Schack with round wounds is having a ball.

Just wondered if anyone else has made the switch back and now prefers the freedom of not having to worry about damping that B string.

  9. Thought I should add this comment from F-Bass manufacturer reference which is best.

Does Neck-Through construction sound better than Bolt-On?

“Better” is subjective to the player.
We actually find that a wider range of players prefer Bolt-On. It has a quicker attack & an overall more lively tone, is more responsive to playing dynamics, doesn’t render the entire bass worthless if the neck is damaged beyond repair, and it’s standard to boot. The neck-through construction has always and will always be an option for those who want a little more compression and sustain. It’s a positively beautiful thing in the upper register.

Me, not like bolt ons, what ever gave you that idea!! Sculptured heel or not I just think it’s a lazy cheap way of joining two pieces of wood…. Especially on something costing 5k.

Originally it was a way to construct a mass produced Bass/Guitar as opposed to set neck  (upright bass )  Or neck through Alembic etc. but it has since been recognised as having a distinctly separation, or disconnect (tone) property to a through neck construction. That many like, and prefer.   Yes they could and should have followed others in making this heal less intrusive by now.

As far as (here is one I made earlier from a box) ?  😕 does it have a quarter sawn neck and are the woods seasoned and selected for best quality.

I have a Fender CS 62 P bass it is wonderful,  I payed £2250 second hand and worth every penny of that -  No I wouldn't pay £5k.    but I would have a Mr Shuker - JJ Pbass special,  made for sub £3k

another point is back in the day when fender made these in house by craftsmen that selected woods etc they were good instruments, greed by CBS and subsequent accountants has seen facsimiles outsourced by the company all over the third world, and made down to a price with very confusing names that create confusion as to what the model name means anymore. An MDF model can't be far away by now

  11. Hi Guys n Gals,

I was hoping to sell this bass into our community but still here obviously, this is my last bump before removal and then it will probably go to a store next month which will inevitably put the price up £250 due to commission.

This bass I believe is worth £2k second hand, and a bargain at £1100. IMO 😇  having owned a few chambered basses including Rob Allen mb-2,  Status Electro etc, this is by far the most versatile bass with best tone I have owned.   PM me if wavering 🙂

Reason for sale too many Fives and now only playing 4's

    Thanks for looking
