  1. It appeared last week on kijiji for a market price , a blue reissue Samurai , the Yamaha SBV500. I have a yellow one , and spent some years looking for it. It’s one of the few long scale basses I regularly play , I think of it as being like a Jazz bass on steroids , but much funkier. And today got a call from some friends that work at our local L&M , the big music retailer in Canada. The blue Samurai had appeared at the store , they were going to move it for a really good price , and was I interested … Now I have a yellow one that I love , but I could not turn down the deal. I’ll pick it up tomorrow. And I’m flattered that they called me before they put it out! Sold!

  2. I knew it wouldn't be long before you got back into it Part of the fun is buying, selling, trying and changing rigs and basses. I had an ebs 360hd - amazing amp. Never got chance to gig it, but everything about it was lovely in practice. I'm still a big believer in parametric / semi parametric dials on Amps.

  4. Exactly how I've frequently described mine! Had one of these for a while, such a playable, surprisingly well-balanced & great-sounding bass. As well as looking amazing! Getting pretty hard to find now, sometimes very silly prices when they come up, too.

Here's the April 2024 update from https://tomreadbass.co.uk Transcriptions! 33 new charts on the site, taking the FREE resource for reading bass players to 1335 accurate transcriptions, in standard notation. And, as usual, the website remains 100% open and free, thanks to everyone that has clicked the "Buy Me A Beer" button. This helps to go towards the domain and web hosting expenses - and I do enjoy a beer after a scorewriting session too! I'd like to think most bass players and bass communities are aware of this website, but do keep sharing please, it is appreciated. There's lots more stuff I need to chart for myself for upcoming gigs and shows this year, and the orders keep coming in, so I'm sure there will be plenty more charts added to the site through the summer of 2024!

  8. >30 years as a Finance Director here, and I would advise very strongly against going this route unless you genuinely expect to be as successful as Taylor Swift. Technically speaking, any working band is automatically a Partnership under the 1890 Act but nobody gives a toss and I've never heard of anyone acting (i.e. sueing someone or trying to claim equal shares of band revenues) on that basis. Don't mean it ain't happened, mind. Open a 'band' bank account, however, and you open a number of doors. Very probably, no bug-eyed monsters will walk through those doors; but if the doors aren't there then there's no risk. Shared ownership of anything in band is a disaster waiting to happen. The bands I play in get paid variously through all sorts of channels ... cash, Concur, Opus, etc. Whichever person can be bothered to deal with it collects the money and then distributes it later, usually (but not necessarily) as cash. If you can't trust one of your bandmates to give you your £50 from playing the Dog & Duck last week, then you should probably reconsider who you play with. 🤨

  10. @Merton's TE1200 sounded amazing at last year's Bass Bash. I probably won't be able to get my hands on one again until next year's Bash - but I'd like to spend some time figuring out why it was so impressive.

  11. There is definitely something special about the TE1200, maybe the EQ frequency points or the dual compressors but it sounds lovely. I was tempted last year but the new price put me off slightly but the purchase on here was a great deal

  12. Of course we dont just like bass do we. My favorite musicians are not bass players. A thread for your favourite musicians who dont play bass because we are mature and appreciate music as a whole. Anything from brass, drums, piano, guitar, synth or any stringed instrument. Anything that makes noise well.... Is all good here. This guy is just a MONSTER. Ive yet to see or witness a guitar player who has this much on the guitar. There is no doubt Norman Brown could probably play anything written down in front of him. Of course its subjective. But his feel and touch. James Ross is his bass player who is also a MONSTER...

  14. As a quick aside: according to the Chart Music TOTP podcast, the one glove was to hide the badly stained hand he'd acquired as a result of a hasty decision to apply jet black hair dye the day before a TOTP recording. How true this is, I couldn't say, but the CM folks are usually very good with their research.

  17. I never thought of it that way. I'm sorry if you have taken offence That was never my intention. I'm certainly not associating him with Gary Glitter. It's just he was part of the same era of popular culture. I was thought I was making a lighthearted point about how abjectly crap stage gimmicks were back in those days by today's standards. I only mentioned Alvin Stardust because I vividly remember him and that glove during those days. I could just as easily mentioned how people thought Roxy Music had such a glamorous and futuristic image at the time. Nowadays they just look like students on a fancy dress night out.

  20. I'm always in awe of the sheer speed of bluegrass players. This is a lovely little phone recording of three of the best around today – particularly Noam Pickleny (banjo) and Brittany Haas (fiddle) – roaring through an old folksong and managing to sound like a band twice the size.

  21. Some lovely boards here. @stewblack takes the “never even heard of that one before” award for me, which is always an excellent internet rabbit hole to head down! @Berserker - yeah the MS range is excellent, isn’t it? If you can think it, there’s probably a way to do it with one of these!

  24. Last night's rehearsal for my band Mustang Sally was in a beautifully restored Victorian village schoolroom in the middle of nowhere, use of kitchen, sparkly bogs and a flat load in and out - it even has acoustic panels on the ceiling, so a good sound too - it made me feel good even before unpacking the bass. I used the Roland Cube 100 combo and took along the new Talman shorty 5-string for a change. Three new numbers (Footloose, Maneater (me on sax) and Money for nothing). All went well until our lady singist said she didn't feel right fronting the last of these, not able to phrase the words laconically enough, and a bit low for her too. I stood next to her and sang along with her to try and help her fit the words in - big mistake! I suddenly found myself catapulted into the lead vocalist slot for this number by popular acclaim having successfully avoided it by shoe-gazing whenever this 'opportunity' had arisen before... What a fool I am... have pity on me!

  27. Don't forget this is an archtop with a tailpiece so most of the string tension is absorbed by the sides. It's only the downward forces which need to be resisted by the top (something like 15% of total string tension). A normal guitar has all the string tension pulling on the bridge itself which is glued to the top. The arching itself also provides strength. Having said that, I shall be sh_tting bricks when the time comes to string it up! My best guess is that it will be fine, but it's hard to know.

  29. Times have changed (thankfully). Back then he (and Saville) could get away with all sorts because they were surrounded by aging DJs who also groped and leered at young girls on Top of the Pops and most likely TV executives who liked a bit of workplace sexual harassment which wasn't reported. The most shocking thing about the whole celebrity paedo thing for me though was that Stoke Mandeville Hospital knew all about Saville but allowed him to carry on (and even facilitated some of his behaviour) because he raised a massive amount of money for them. That is truly grotesque.

  30. Current setup. Waiting for a Laney Digbeth DB-PRE, and a 60cm patch lead to connect the SP to the Wooly Mammoth clone. I don't think I like the Swollen Pickle on the board because the Splinter needs to be on to give it sufficient boost. The Wooly Mammoth clone is very nice though. The chorus was £30 and due an upgrade to something else. I absolutely love the Orange Kongpressor. It adds a really nice flavour to the clean tone. DIY pedal board made from an IKEA shelf (remember this one kids!?). The power supply is a Cioks DC7 screwed to the underside. I tend to play doom and black metal, but messing about with a 90s alternative rock cover band too.

  31. I think this is where the issues lie. A football club etc is a club or society and it will have members who pay a subscription. They will have some sort of constitution/governing document which will means they are an 'unincorporated society' in legal terms run by a committee. A band is not a club/society but a group of people with a common business interest, which is not the same thing. They aren't going to be able to submit a governing document and list who's the chair/secretary/treasurer etc. They'd have to register as some sort of business structure.

  33. Unfortunately, the UK's approach to the AML and KYC legislation (anti-money laundering and 'know your customer') has been to over react and make it draconian. You are unlikely to get a club/associations account without evidence of a governing document, designated officers, and an extract from committee minutes authorising the setting up of the bank account.

  34. If we have to have a thread about the programme, let’s call it by its name: Glitter:The Popstar Paedophile, not just Popstar.
    1 point
  35. 50 years ago Glitter was a superstar in this country. I remember it well. Looking at footage of his heyday now you can't help but be struck by him being a bit too chubby and a bit too old to be appealing to a young audience. His act looks like someone's dad doing a turn (or having a bit of a turn) at a kids Christmas party. The whole thing looks shabby and homemade. That such tosh passed for glamour just shows the paucity of the real thing in most people's lives back in the 1970's. And while we're on the subject of mid-'70's popstars, what about Alvin Stardust and that one black glove? Was he unblocking drains before he went on stage or was it something much more sinister?

  36. Well summarised but to clarify a couple of things (and expansion on the last point). In terms of 12" driver derived cabs, I have owned (I might have owned other 12's years ago): TC RS112 (x2) - compact to the extreme but boxy sounding Aguilar DB112s - tone I like, manoeuvrability awful Berg 212 - handles everything but not the tone I'm looking for and I used to blame that on Neo drivers but I realise it is essentially down to design... + it was a little too wide TKS 112 (x2) - very light easily manoeuvred but they had that tone which I attributed to 'neo' or lack of cab colouration Tech Soundsystem and Schroder 212 - essentially the same design which had excellent dispersal but in certain rooms almost honky/nasal + handles on the side made it awkward Genz Benz 212 NeoX - a loud upfront cab which seemed to be less sterile but not quite right and even after I fitted spring loaded side handles it was awful to manoeuvre. Of these cabs I've owned I've established the larger heavier cabs tend to have a baked in tone which I like and I've yet to be able to EQ an amp (of which I've owned some very good ones) to get the same tone from featherweight cabs. NOW... that does lead itself to the point that if I'm going through the PA then the tone of the cab that I am hearing is not the same as punters BUT I am wanting the tone I hear to be pleasing to 'me' which is probably why I don't get on with IEM... does that make sense? The drummer is a firm/hard hitter and his kick is invariably mic'd even in small venues. The TC RS210 cabs have a form I like (weight is about as much as I'd like but I could take a kilo or 2 more), they sound right for me BUT I have that issue of 1 isn't quite enough in some venues when we have downsized PA (to QSC K10s) but 2 cabs seems almost too much. Don't get me wrong, I'm only talking about me maybe walking a few hundred extra meters, up/down some stairs 'occasionally' but I'd like to establish if there is a single cab solution right for me. As you say it isn't a big ask and Ashdown's 310 isn't such a bad idea as a solo cab. The final point re. BF 1x15 - I do also own a TKS 115H (under the Aguilars in the pic) which is a very small, light 15" that can be carried 1 handed (14kg top mount handle) and I actually like the sound of it. I rarely gig it on its own due to 'my perception' that it can't cut it as a solo cab as opposed to the pair of TC 210 cabs (a single TC210 at certain gigs tends to not project and I have tried to elevate it or position to get the most from the room positioning). However, that is my perception and I've not tested it in anger so to speak... but I am going to this weekend. I've asked the lads in the band and someone coming along to the gig to see us (who I trust as a musician) to give me an honest appraisal about it's ability to project the bass without PA support (small venue). Their views on the tone aren't my primary concern (so long as it doesn't sound awful) as I'll judge that for myself. It could be that I already own the answer to my problem but I've avoided it as I can't imagine a single 15" being able to do more than the 2x10" and almost as much as the pair of 210s. This was me trying to test a few scenario out recently (I took each rig out to different gigs)... certain cabs are now gone as I eliminated them after trialling in different settings. Apologies for the long winded reply @Phil Starr but I'm putting stuff down as I analyse it in my head on the hoof. LOL

  40. Drums is/are my main instrument so i was casually interested to see it, though not expecting much after the bobbins that was the greatest 250 guitarists. That Meg White's in there didn't fill me with hope. Actually as far as lists go it's not bad, though no way would I include Bonham, Moon and Mitchell in the top 10. My top 10 , in no order; Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Billy Cobham (ridiculously low on the list), Jo Jones, Tony Williams, Jack de Johnette, Bill Bruford, Dennis Chambers. Yeah it's heavily geared towards jazzers but IMO the great jazz drummers are a breed apart.

He probably accidentally left his ultra expensive Martin guitar as he had other legal things on his mind. These things happen, and for some reason, often on Gumtree. Perfectly innocent and believable explanation IMHO. Rob

  46. Remember my post on April fools day about making a guitar out of wood ash? A few people fell for it I suspect because it sounds vaguely plausible. I even started to think that there might be something in it myself. So to prove it one way or another I'm giving it a try on a small scale. I'm using ash from the fire pit that we used last night. After removing any large lumps or unburnt bits I added wood glue and water. Stir and leave to settle, not sure how long it will take to dry..... I'll get back to you.
