So this evening is the first chance since the weekend that I have had to do a few little jobs including bringing an old flame back into the fold. I will say I have owned this bass since 2006 but since I was in my early 20s and living at home it really hasn't been used I even made the choice to leave it at my parents home when I moved out many moons ago. I have over the last couple of years purchased far to many basses,sold far to many basses but in doing so I came across the old receipt for when I purchased this bass (again a while ago but it started the itch) which has led to this point. On Sunday I removed the bass from my old bedroom and we made the journey home. The Bass in question is a Gibson EBO that has had John Birch convert it to EB3 type specs but with his pickup and bridge and although it's been a while it is very similar condition to when I last used it in anger with crazing the faded colour to a orangy gold rather than the cherry and all the knocks and marks expected with a bass from the 60s. Today was finally time to show some TLC with new strings a gentle clean and then a really good oil of the board (not the best area to work but needs must sometimes) The bass is now looking and playing great although I have yet to play through the amp as I ran out of time but I forgot how loud the bass is acoustic the vibrations through the body is totally surprising even more so when you consider the small body. I love it can't wait to get it cranked up as I remember the Birch pickup being very hot.7 points

I think that way of looking at things will only lead to you missing out. People can have bad days, the salesperson you spoke to might not be representative of the rest of the business - my experience with Peach was very different. If you write off every business you have a bad experience with then you'll just end up limiting your own options. What about giving them a call/sending an email to explain the situation, they might be apologetic and want another chance at your business? Things can go wrong, it's how a business chooses to act when an issue has been brought to their attention that tells me whether the business is one I'd want to do business with or not. Just my two cents!6 points

2011 Gibson SG Bass in Faded Cherry (Now Sold). This is a wonderful bass but I find myself playing my old Musicmaster more often and don’t really need two short scales at the moment. The bass is in excellent condition. No nasty knocks or dings to note and the frets are perfect. The faded Cherry finish has a really nice patina to it and doesn’t look washed out like others I’ve seen. It features an upgraded Hipshot bridge but the original 3 point bridge is included in the sale along with original Gibson hard case and inspection card. Weighs in at 7.8lbs on the kitchen scales. Ideally looking to sell but would trade for a nice Jazz or JMJ mustang. Would also be interested in a Telecaster or Fender Champ (Original or ‘68 reissue). I am selling my brand new EBMM DarkRay in the limited-edition White Sparkle finish. This finish was only available online (EBMM Vault) and sold out within a week. Mine is no1 out of 25. TBH, this was an impulse buy. I saw the promo videos and just had to have one. It looks really cool and the White Sparkle finish is rather subtle and not so into your face like some other Music Man finishes (Yes, Amethyst Sparkle, I am looking at you ;- ) I also thought it would be my metal bass. Turns out I am not so much into distortion after all. I also recently got yet another of my fav Spector basses (another impulse buy of a limited edition bass, can you see a pattern emerging here? 😉 and so the DarkRay can go to a new home. I am not in a hurry and not desperate to sell it. I am happy to keep it as a collection piece if it does not sell. So, the asking price is firm and less than what I had to pay for it (more than £3k, thanks to high shipping costs and VAT) just a month ago (May 23rd). The bass is in mint showroom condition and has never left the house (very limited home use only). It is currently stored safely in its OHSC in a pet and smoke free house. Collection would be recommended but I can also ship it (UK only) using the original packaging and using a decent courier (I normally use UPS). Shipping would of course add some costs. What about trades? I worked in music instrument retail for a number of years. When I left the industry after working my way up to assistant manager, I was earning £14Kpa. Salaries are pretty much the same different 25 years later. You’ll get more money in pretty much any other profession. Despite the potential high price of instruments, the profit margins are generally tiny, which is why what few shops are left tend to do commission sales as other than the necessary business insurance (which the shop should have anyway) there’s nothing for them to buy and the margins are way better than new instrument sales. I don’t have current figures but after discounting I recall a US standard P bass in the early 2000s returned less than £100 profit, and to stock certain brands you’ll be in the hole for a couple of hundred grand in business loans to cover everything you are mandated to buy in. This, the waning interest in musical instruments among kids and the move to online has pretty much done for MI bricks and mortars shops in the UK. Hence the old cliché about the quickest way to make a small amount of money in the MI retail industry is to start with a large amount of money Where there’s no money you just won’t attract good service staff - people prepared to accept low salaries (or have no choice) have so many other options - so what remains is a mixed bag of wannabe/failed musicians and a fair amount of people who are probably unemployable elsewhere. Many of the remaining shops are run by one person with zero to a few helpers - so you’re very much at the mercy of the way the owner runs the shop. Modern management, training and service principles just don’t apply to the MI industry in the UK and never really have. Now compare this to a shop like Thomann - huge, turning over nearly €1B pa and run like any other professional business. They’ve been able to tap into a global marketplace and aside from one or two br**it niggles the service I’ve had from them has been stellar. UK shops just cannot compete and I seriously doubt they’d ever be able to establish something similar in the UK as the market really is tiny in comparison. None of the above is intended to excuse poor service, just to illustrate the reality of MI retail in the UK. IMHO there is a place for a small number of boutique shops - but these will succeed or fail on good customer service because places like Thomann are more often than not better at communicating, have a much wider range, are cheaper and only marginally slower with delivery - and their webshop actually works!5 points

Unhappily, the guitarist in my first (college) band has recently joined the drummer in the great band in the sky. Both were my age (although the drummer had suffered with MND for many years). Someone has just posted some pictures from 1979 on Facebook. Here I am showing my earliest attempt at reproducing John Deacons rig. I have an 18 and two 4x12s (they're even Sound City). The bass was my first Precision - where are you now S749320? The perm earned me the nickname Phyllis.5 points

I picked up a Trace Elliott Elf a few weeks ago and while I still prefer the sound from my valve head and hybrid AB class amp, there's a huge amount to be said for the convenience of the amp and the sound is still pretty good from this amp.4 points

A bucolic scene, but could be deceptive. Some heavy raindrops, a brief shower..? Maybe it'll turn out fine after all... 2 @Leonard Smalls Being laid up with a broken leg has some advantages (arguably!) - I had time to produce a fine example (arguably again!) of "Doh" music (*). I suggest either headphone, or a big hifi to listen as it's dribbling with big 'ol stereo stuff. 3 @Nail Soup The picture made me think of tranquility and solitude. So I decided to go for a kind of 'solo' thing - a single performance into a single mic, with minimal number of takes. So just a guitar tuned to open D and vocal. 4 Lurksalot Well I thought this shouted 'Folk' so I tried it, and it actually turned out a little bit folky 5 @upside downer The image is of a bucolic scene so I decided to take a relaxing ramble through the musical countryside with not a care in the world. 6 @skankdelvar Something a bit more basic than last month's kitchen sink production number. An admiring nod to Richard Gaughan and Peter Maxwell Davies. Relisted for sale, a 1989/1990 MIJ P Bass serial no: I 030250. Beautiful sunburst P with serious growl. Has wear to bottom edge likely from a guitar stand or similar. Some other light dings and scratches as you would expect from 30+ years. This P is a peach and has a beautifully grained Rosewood fretboard and naturally aged chrome wear. Nice low action. Card arrived last night. Fitted it after work today. Went OK 👍! remove 'lid' of laptop case Remove CD/DVD drive (wasn't expecting that, but it was easy enough) Remove a panel sitting above the card (wasn't expecting that, took a while to figure out how, but then it was easy enough) Swap the card PC is still working - writing this post on it. Just opened the DAW and played a track with typical number of tracks, plug-ins etc. Yes, it's got the 16gb and plenty of headroom. Thanks everybody!3 points

I fly around the stage! I'm 50 next year and can't seem to calm down. I do a lot of cardio to keep in shape but my left shoulder is starting to feel it now. Probably best described my bass playing father in law who having seen me said "good but a bit posey". I asked if he meant me or the band in general. I'm not defending bad service, these are just observations. By walking away without speaking to the manager, you have accepted bad service in my opinion. Also, Peach isn't the sort of shop you can walk down the High Street and think 'oh, I'll just pop in there and have a browse around'. You have to make an effort to get there, whether by car or by public transport and to do that, I would suggest, a visit to their web site to check opening hours would have been advisable. In doing that, it clearly says 'We are open for pre-booked appointments only. To learn more about our appointment system, click the button to the right'. Clicking the button takes you to this video which explains why. It's 10 minutes long and you don't have to watch all of it, but the first two minutes tells you why this system has been put in place and it makes complete sense. Make an appointment and you're guaranteed to have someone there that will help you. That said, looking at their current bass inventory, there isn't much there to get excited about. Awash with Fender's and little else. They even used to have a decent selection of CS basses, but now only two 🤷♂️. Not great comms from them on your arrival, but it must get a bit tedious dealing with people who just turn up several times a day without booking. When I went there (without an appointment) I read the notice on the door and did think twice about ringing the bell. I did ring at the door and my opening line was an apology, which probably went a long way to dissolving any potential negative response. The guy said he would see what he could and after a couple of minutes I was allowed in and explained that I had specifically come to see two not inexpensive instruments which he went and brought to a practice room for me. Life is too short to hold grudges over trivialities like this.3 points

Although we all know Ashdown and its products, it isn't a large organisation. When I visited Ashdown HQ a couple of years back I was heartened to find a family business working without pretentious frills in modest surroundings. I imagine in the current environment of component shortages and increased logistical costs that launching new products is even more challenging, especially as asian manufacturing needs decent volumes to be viable. When I visited it appeared that Ashdown maintains a small electronics diagnostic/ servicing/ prototyping facility where I assume its premium products are built. I don't think the ABM750 is overpriced considering its UK handbuilt heritage.3 points

The Trampa-nator is not on the loose, Zena is safely quiescent on my desk, Twiggy is far from firewood. (I did laugh at the comments tho!) Things have been progressing. I reprinted the ball-end holders for the tuners; they now have an extension that sits against the 'body' to prevent them just spinning. The Nylon filament is well strong enough, but it does tend to 'string' (Hence all the fuzzy bits which I was in too much of a hurry to play and so did not file down). I also mounted some ball races to cut down on the force required to turn them; it's still not great but it's workable. In the first photo you can see I've also printed strap buttons and a case for the electronics (Well apart from the battery lol), there is an active 3 band tone control + volume in there). I've also printed a new style pup holder, the pup was sitting too high in the body forcing a crazy high action ... it's a fair bit better now. I've settled on a 780mm B0 to 740mm G2 and started to shape the neck accordingly. The neck is asymmetric (by choice) and meanders all over reflecting the relaxing just go for it hand crafting (with some one eye closed, tongue poking out, power jigsawing) I've been doing. I was so chilled, I goofed and did not leave enough space at the edge of the fingerboard so whilst my B0 is just about OK, my G2 tends sneak off the edge. With an unfinished pine fingerboard I'm not getting the flatness nor hardness of surface that I think I need, so I'm trying to print a fretboard. I've actually got a 500mm radius on it. I should be in a position to try it out in the next week or so. So ... S'manth, why have you fitted a strap!? Twiggy had her first outing to band practice on Tuesday ... the reception was warm! OMG that's amazing was repeated a few times. We are not in the habit of taking a photo at practice, this was our first time all together, our new lineup, where everyone remembered to bring their "shirt"; some 'photoshopping' to be done before they go on the web site, but you can see Twiggy! To be honest, I need to do a lot more practice with her. The longer scale length than I am used to, the fact she has 5 strings, her being multi-scale and fretless ... all new and different for me, but I'm enjoying the journey! And she sounded pretty good! We've our first "performance" in a couple of weeks (We are playing to entertain (hopefully) the folks who will be taking part in the Worthing Pride march whilst they are getting organised) ... I am hopeful Twiggy will make her first public appearance there Once I've got the fretboard printed and on I'll try to get a recording to share. S'manth x3 points

I can’t stand still when I play, I ‘Dad dance’ on the spot in front of my mic & if I’m not required to sing, I prowl around often interacting with our string section of Violin & Cello…Who are often doing the same! It’s quite distracting when our Cellist strides over, she’s nearly 6’ in her heel’s 😃 You have to be careful of our violinist otherwise you could be poked with a bow! I can’t stand watching bands who ‘Shoe-gaze’ their way through a performance? Give the audience something to watch..3 points

Late 70's were just a magical time IMO. So many great local bands / talent about. Almost every pub had live music of some kind and you could go between venues in Glasgow listening to all the different bands. Great times. Dave2 points

LOL thank you @Rosie! I notice you signed up very recently and these two posts about GigRealm are your only posts so far. I know exactly how these things work, I'm highly computer literate and and I'm quite networked within my local music scene too. Customer service (still hiding behind "Feedback") came back to me saying they had been doing some update to the site - except they did not say that in their first reply to my request for help, they only offered that as a (rather feeble, by then) excuse the following day after I had complained in a further message. In other words, I found them useless, while the site is all right - when it works, and that's the key. How do I tell malfunction, incompetence and maintenance downtime from each other, if I'm not told vital info until half way through any given process I'm trying? As I said, not worth bothering at this stage. There are lots of similar sites which are currently more established and less trouble. I might have another look at GigRealm in 12 months time.2 points

This is my philosophy too. It's not good when a problem arises or a mistake is made, but they happen (I've made many in my time). The real character comes through in the way that it is dealt with. Unfortunately, that is usually only apparent when the issue is challenged. I don't like complaining but I will if I think it is justified. Then it is a case of making your point with no emotion and judging the response.2 points

I do have a Blue Pearl/original matt black plate/maple neck mid 90s USA Sterling (with the inlaid neck plate but not the Flea bridge) that I'm thinking of moving on. I'm only really backing up acoustic stuff as the moment and with the Sterling, versatile as it is, I can't really dial it back enough to not get a bo*locking for being too noisy, so I'm using less hard core options. Consequently, the Sterling is just laid up in it's (original MM) case at the moment. I'll dig it out, date it properly on the EBMM site, get some pictures done and see what is a good price. It's pretty much ding free, so rough finger in the air would be £1000-1100 I guess, looking at previous listings on Basschat, Bass Gallery, Reverb etc.2 points
