  2. I think the black vinyl looks good now thats it's done. I promised myself that this time I wouldn't do it on the kitchen table, but at work where light, work area and tools are better. I ended up doing it on the dining room table, so it's not perfect, but good enough. 🙃

  4. My first gig last night in a while - illness and Covid has meant my main band hasn't worked for ages. Last night was a regular gig for me with function band 'The Black Suits', an outfit featuring my duo guitarist colleague along with keys and drums. The gig was at the wonderful Kings Hall in Ilkley, one of my favourite parts of the world. Lovely old theatre with a large heavily raked old-style stage. Long haul in with the gear from the front of the building right through the auditorium to the high stage, which fortunately has a hydraulic lift. Resident tech Ollie was incredibly helpful, along with all the other staff - wish all gigs were like this. Event was a Christmas charity fund raiser, always well attended and great crowd. Took along my Jazz bass and couldn't get rid of a really bad interference onstage during soundcheck - only became manageable when I turned 90 degrees to the audience! Tried everything to sort it, and eventually succeeded by using the guitarist's spare wireless system. After that the gig went really well, two sets of mainly upbeat dance stuff as well as a final Christmas tune. Was knackered when we'd finished though - set off at 2pm, back home at 3 am! Am getting a bit old for this malarkey, although probably down to not being match fit due to getting out of the habit I think / hope!

  6. FS - GLX-D wireless system, really great piece of kit, solid connection, great range and even has a built in tuner It's used but in perfect working order, comes with original box, user manual and spare guitar cable. As you'll see from the pics the power supply cable is worn so the wires are exposed, I taped it up and it works perfectly, although I ran it on my pedal board using a different power supply. Collection from Leeds preferred but can post at cost

  7. Had this up before but decided to keep it but putting it back up at a lower price to see if anyone wants it. Swamp ash body, 2x G&L Alnico single coil pickups, 38 mm nut, saddle lock bridge, new Ernie Ball rounds. The weight is 5.1 kg or 11.2 lb`s so no light weight but it`s fine for me with a wide strap. The bass is in exc condition. Would prefer collection from Paisley but don`t mind a bit of travelling, within reason, for a hand over. If you require shipping the cost will be around £20 or arrange your own and I will box it up for you.

  8. Friday night saw my first full length gig with the band I joined at the beginning of 2020. It went pretty well. A small venue, with a small crowd- but they were very appreciative. It was absolutely freezing in the venue, so I do admire them all for sticking it out to the end. It was great to see people up and dancing- but whether they were moved by the music, or just trying to keep warm, we couldn't tell. 😁 Our set contains quite a few originals that are rather tricky to play. So I'm afraid I just stood there concentrating rather than trying to move about and look interesting. The lovely KevB came along and took a video. It's great, but I look very serious- almost on the point of biting my lip in concentration. But our wonderful front woman is very smiley and sings like an angel, so on the whole it came over well. We had some very nice comments afterwards, including from musicians I know and respect, so a good night all in all. But I must learn to relax a bit with this set. Need to practice more I guess, so that it becomes second nature.

  13. So 2021 was due to be a fallow year in terms of gear buying for me but I fell off the wagon early and to say I didn't buy much gear this year couldn't be further from the truth. So, to finish off the year in style I decided I wanted to add another P Bass to my collection, before trying (really trying) to be sensible next year with my purchases. I wanted something different to my number 1 P bass that I could primarily string with round wounds, but similar enough that I could dial those buttery P Bass tones in when needed. I didn't want to spend a huge amount of money though. Anyway, speaking to an old mucker of mine yesterday who plays mainly keys, he told me he had just got hold of a new Lakland Skyline Special Edition 44-64 that he can't quite gel with. He said wasn't too far from me this weekend so we arranged to meet up and he popped over today with the bass. It's in an Ice Blue Metallic finish with a Jazz width neck and for something I wouldn't usually like, it sort of works for me looks-wise. Practically it's a wee bit heavier than I would usually feel comfortable with (it's 9 1/2lbs) and I'm not a fan of PJ's but I forgot just how good Laklands are to play. This one is exceptionally playable and on a strap it really doesn't feel heavier than my other basses at all. Sound-wise the Jazz pickup is noticeably quieter than the P bass one (as I've found with most PJ's) and even when both are blended in I can't hear any discernible difference to a usual P Bass pickup. Build quality is right up there as it is with any other Lakland I've played and man, that neck is just something else. I've got it for today and tomorrow to see how I get on with it. Weight aside (it really doesn't feel that heavy on a strap) and the fact it's a bit gaudy for my usual tastes: Oh, and the fact it's a PJ, it just plays so well. I'm really tempted, especially as GG has them in their sale currently (£899) which is less than annex-demo they're also advertising with a bit of damage!

  14. We played a Xmas function last night, it was a blast. We hammed it up for the punters - Saturday Night's Alright, Wish It Could Be Xmas, Livin La Vida Loca and all that, got about 60 people on the dance floor, the rest were outside vaping as usual or staring at their phones. The punters were a tough nut to crack at first (a bit of Covid caution we think) , but once they were up they were up for the entire night so that was a good result. Interesting point though, we had a last minute rethink of the setlist and decided to throw out Valerie as we thought it might cause a stampede to the bar. When we came to that point in our set our singer/guitarist, who starts that particular song off, forgot we'd axed it so we played it anyway and it turned out to be the number that got the party started. I mean, how can you sit through I Wish staring at your phone, then jump up and start dancing to Valerie? Nothing like knowing your audience (not!).

  15. MK3 started taking shape today. Jigsaw has been busy 😁 Can I ask.... If I wanted to build a tweeter less cab to go under the full range version, what would I need in the way of crossover / filter? Thanks. Jon

  16. Had a good chat with the band and they all agreed about the volume issue. It was an issue before I joined and the previous bass player went out and bought the custom molded plugs. Its mostly pub gigs we do with the odd thing on a proper stage with sound guy and big PA.I have bought a set of KZ ZS10 pro IEM. On recomendation of all the info I have learned off this forum. At the very least I will have a nice set of phones for home use if it doesnt work out with the live thing. I will order a headphone amp, probs the Behringer. I think some of the band may have a go at some point but at the moment its just me. Which is fine as I am the one whos is moaning about sore ears. We have agreed to keep the volume at a decent level in future...Let's see how that goes. Will try them out in house first, then maybe practise. If it all works out I may pay a bit more for a decent set but looking forward to giving these a go.

  17. Hi , this is my Fender Jazz Bass Special in pearl white. Guitar bought new 12 months ago , the onlymarks on this bass are the usual black pickgaurd swirls/ scratches. The bass is in excellent condition and plays superbly.

  18. If someone could sue people for management cow poop phrases as well that would be awesome. Just thought I'd run that idea up the flag pole and see who salutes it. Just some blue sky thinking but we need to action these solutions to provide the deliverables to all steakholders.

  19. I can only echo the comments made about generally sounding like me. To prove a point a few years back, I downgraded my rig and went back to owning just 2 Squiers. I toured and recorded with those basses - they played the O2 in London with me and were on the BBC. Then I decided that it's nice to have nice things. I now own 4 American basses and a lot of kit again now. Why? Simply because life is too short. Does it make me sound better? No, not really. The 1hr a day practice I have been doing since the pandemic started does though. We make our own choices, finances allowing.

  22. Last nights Christmas gig went ok. It's a low concrete ceiling at this venue and we suffered a bit with the vocalists monitors reflecting the sound back off the ceiling to the rhythm section and I couldn't hear myself play for much of the show, but was told I didn't drop any clangers. Guitarist hurt his back the morning of the show, but an emergency appointment with an osteopath, a stool to sit on and some crack cocaine just about saw him gut through the show. Fair play to him. Thats it now until the end of January.

  26. On the one hand: Yeah, of course. Everyone else in this thread ordered their Frogs and Elwoods from atop their radium-powered velocipedes while holding back Wat Tyler and his pangolins. I get it. On the other hand: TK in Vegas' Jake - as seen on this very page! - was ordered in September, and he's currently spanking the derrière off it[*] as we speak. Frankly, I'd quite like my sofa shot just to stop daydreaming about the bloody thing 😛 EDIT: Anyway, point is... Like Pierre says, assume 20 weeks. That way, you'll be delighted if/when it probably turns up earlier [*] I imagine. It's hard to tell, given Vegas' famously tight reins on local happenstance.

  27. Having played mostly live for all my bass playing career, I've come to the conclusion that (most) basses sounds bassy. I pick the bass I'm playing on a whim. My cheapest (current) bass cost £350, my most expensive cost £1600. I've owned and played cheaper and more expensive. Is the £1600 bass better? Not really - I just bought it because I liked and continue to like it and there was no cheaper option. My choices in bass are almost entirely aesthetic and ergonomic, with a side order of disliking Jazz basses - I've tried them and they just don't work for me on any level. I'm not saying anyone is wrong to deep dive into the minutae of what makes their sound theirs, I'm just happy existing in a place and point in my life where I just don't care about that level of frankly distracting and exhausting (to me) detail any more and simply enjoy playing bass for bass's sake.

  33. I use a Gramma. People will be along soon to tell you that they don't work. IME sometimes they do and sometimes they don't, but they always protect the bottom of your cab from damage.

  34. Logically, the damages should be all the revenue the Plaintiff lost from Spotify as a result of Taylor Swift's plagiarism, and that's an amount that could easily run into pennies.

  41. Brilliant gig last night with the 'Spoons at Krakatoa in Aberdeen - our first post lockdown public gig. Was supposed to be starting at 10 but things were running late so we didn't get started until nearly 11. Grateful for folk sticking around. I was getting a bit grumpy at the sliding schedule and I think I managed to channel it into my playing. Blew the place to bits, lots of people up dancing until the end. Was decidedly ungrumpy at the end

  45. This is where we are up to so far. All three bodies are jointed and glued as are the two tops. I’ve got the body cut out and routed for the yew bass and the ash guitar. Tidied up a couple of issues with my spindle sander. Bit of a hold up on the buckeye build as I am struggling to find black veneer for between the body and the top. Can anyone point me on the right direction?

  46. Just completed an overseas sale. Lots of extra issues now post-brexit of course but what I wanted to mention was the inclusion of an Apple AirTag. For £29 we were able to keep an eye on the progress of the bass as it left the Country, got held at customs (very helpful because the courrier tracking suggested it was being delivered at the time), and then tracking in the destination country all the way to it's new home. Clearly a few quid extra cost but for a higher value transaction a lot of added piece of mind!!!
