Up for sale is this incredible Warwick Thumb bass, built in 2017. Masterbuilt with the nicest pieces of Bubinga I have ever seen, the way it shimmers in the light is impossible to photograph. This bass has a factory fitted custom brass Just-A-Nut III fitted to accommodate tuning down to B, which is how I have been using the bass. The nut is absolutely fine for regular tuning too. I also have a Tedur JANIII too cut to standard EADG if wanted, but it shouldn't be needed. The bass was strung up last week with a fresh set of Sadowsky blue label strings tuned to Drop B (B F# B E), 5 string set so the spare .40 will be included in the sale. This has almost all the features a brand new Warwick does, including the wooden tuner heads/trc, glow in the dark market, invisible fret technology and, best of all, the rechargeable lithium battery powered MEC preamp, with matching wood control cover. The preamp also includes a plug and play standard 9V battery snap too, should you not wish to trust a rechargeable preamp! (The regular 9V battery holder would need to be reattached to the control cavity with an adhesive pad or similar as it has been removed) Condition is excellent. No dings or issues with the bass. The only sign of wear is on the neck pickup cover under the top string, bit of string burn. Even the MEC gold logos are fully intact (if you know, you know! ) I have tried to find a way of keeping this bass for a while but sadly finances just can't accommodate keeping it at the moment. Some of you know about my Warwick obsession and I can say this is the best I've had, including all the eighties models etc. The build quality is just stunning. This stunner of a bass came to me as a trade, so I had to google to find out info about it. It appears that it is one of only 4!! basses of this type! And it is a handmade Bacchus Woodline DX5 Sakura. Neck is maple with a purple heart fingerboard. Body is ash with a rather thick sakura (japanese cherry) top. Pickups is Bacchus own, and hardware is Gotoh. The nut is 46mm wide, and spacing at the bridge is 19mm. The bass is passive, with 2x volume and tone. Pull out the tone know and the pickups gets wired in series. The bass comes in original gigbag, and will be padded up good and boxed before shipping. And how does it sound? I have 2 Bravewood Jazz basses. They are lovely. I also have a 66J. They are as lovely as that one. If I played 4 stringers I would keep them. I have come to the conclusion that I will never reach for a 4 string when I have a 5 string option. So I would be keeping the Bravewoods just to look at them. Don't misunderstand me, I AM that shallow, but I am trying to be realistic. I could go on and on, but they are what they are. Proper lush. That is what they are. Obv it is £1.5K each. Just incase anyone gets excited.7 points -

Bit more progress on this. Before adding the tops, I have a few jobs to do. One is cutting and binding the diamond f holes. I used a scrollsaw to rough cut them and made a little sharp-angled sanding block to get them straight: Then cut some maple binding strip to line them: Life is too short to feed stuff through the f holes, especially as this is going to have Jaguar-type sliding switches and so I will have a small access hatch at the back to be able to feed stuff in and hold in place while screws, etc, are being tightened: I thought I'd do something similar to the grain-matched hatch on Matt P's recent bass-build: I started by cutting the hatch out using a Dremel, precision base and 1mm bit: Then added a rebate at the back that will also hold the magnets: Finally, lined the hole with some maple veneer (I did the iron-on trick as I do when I veneer guitar and bass bodies, ie: coat both parts with PVA wood glue; let dry; position and iron on inch at a time; hold until cool and glue grabs): Finally, trimmed with a single-edged razor: There will also be a 1.5mm pinstripe between the wings and the neck so hopefully it will all visually tie up together6 points

I've been using a Barefaced BB2 for a while now, and I was happy enough with it, but I decided to try the Genzler 12-3 slant for a change. Partly because I love my Magellan 800 head, partly because I was interested in the line array and mostly because one appeared for sale when I had some money. I don't want to be negative about the Barefaced cab, it is a monster, but there is something much more focused about the Genzler. The lows are less wooly and the top is less brittle. The Barefaced moved more air, that's not really an issue for my main gig, but I think I will buy another Genzler cab soon. I still prefer my EBS Proline 410, but it's not really a fair fight because that weighs 8 tons and takes up most of the average wedding venue which is my usual gig. Anyway, I like the Genzler rig a lot, it's perfect for my gig. Also, by total chance it was a really good fit for the flight case I've had stashed in the garage for years, just needed to be cut down slightly. Sorry for the dodgy gig pics.5 points

There is a fuel shortage where it needs to be, yes. But according to the government, this is a problem caused by a europe wide shortage of lorry drivers, and not because we kicked them out this year. However, the answer to solve this european wide shortage of lorry drivers, which isn't anything to do with us kicking them out, is to get some more of them in from europe, where there are apparently loads of lorry drivers ready to come in, even though there is a shortage. So, that makes sense. And the other way to get more lorry drivers, is to write to the million people who hold licenses to drive lorries, in case they have just forgotten that they have licenses to drive lorries, rather than quitting because they found something better to do.5 points

Spot on. Vinyl can be fabulous, but you'll be hard pressed to see the benefits on a budget. For the average person, who doesn't have the time, money or inclination to chase the audio dragon, digital gives better results conveniently and relatively cheaply. Horses for courses. For some, hi-fi is a hobby. Nowt wrong with that. However, people who claim one playback method is inherently superior to another are all as bad as each other.4 points

But aren't you making a very big assumption that an HB Stingray won't be good enough for a beginner? I mean the OP @mcnach is a very experienced bass player and, from his comments, has been happy with this bass "out of the box". If it's good enough for him with his knowledge and experience of basses, it should be more than decent for a beginner, no?4 points

Well, let's face it, the bass (guitar and upright) is somewhat limited as a solo instrument, unless you use loads of effects boxes. I would no more choose to listen to a solo bass album than I would a solo drums album. IMO the bass, like the drums, only works as an ensemble instrument.3 points

I make sure the open strings are in tune and the intonation is correct, and I deal with any slight inaccuracies in fretted notes towards the top of the neck by Really Not Giving A Sh*t.3 points

I hadn't seen this post before today, but I purchased this bass from Sue Ryder, so it remains in Suffolk. It is actually an AB-1, not an AB-3, so it has an imbuia back and sides, a mahogany neck and a satin spruce top. As opposed to the AB-3's maple back, sides and neck, and gloss spruce top. It is the nicest acoustic bass I've ever played, though Furch comes close. Its acoustic sound is excellent and reasonably loud, but it really comes into its own when it's amplified. I'd been after one of these since seeing Flea play one in the "Road Trippin'" music video and Victor Wooten playing one with Béla Fleck back in the 90s, though they were well out of my price range back then. I wish Taylor/Klein had made a five string version, as it's the only bass I play without a low B (though I imagine the lower notes would be useless without amplification). But it really is a faultless instrument. If an AB-2 or AB-3 came up for sale, I don't think I could stop myself picking one of those up too.3 points

Epiphone Jack Casady in Pelham Blue, bought new in December '20. I've added a Hipshot Supertone bridge designed as a direct replacement for the original 3-point bridge - this is included in the sale. The bass comes with the Epiphone case which proved very hard to get hold of! The case too is in excellent condition. The bass is fully set up with Dean Markley Blue Steels and is in immaculate condition. I'm not happy to ship this one so it's collection from Dartford. so I went and had another try on this yesterday... partly as you don't see high spec AtelierZ within a mile or two of your house that often and partly as I couldn't believe it hadn't sold yet and in the 2-3 weeks since I first tried it it had got stuck in my mind. I had a nagging thing that this could be one of those "drop everything and buy this" basses and wanted to compare it to my main bass to see how it compared. Plus it's kinda at current Mexican Fender price for equivalent to your top end luthier quality. In short, it's an amazing bass, it's super lightweight, and has a really punchy 70's jazz tone, it sounds like a Fender Jazz with a really really nice transparent and useful active eq, the treble eq point is really well thought out, it's got a big Jazz bass bottom end and I'm struggling to think of a jazz bass that I've played and liked more. If you compared the sound of this to the older Fender '75 AVRI this is a bit warmer and has the ability to give it more balls. Quality wise it's in the bracket where build quality isn't really a consideration. Compared to my USA Lakland or Sadowsky Metro you're talking similar. When @ped had it for sale I asked him about it and he was comparing it to Sadowsky NYC and Celinder. It really is a nice instrument. (oh and If you are googling the DAL model, this seems to have upgraded tuners compared to the listed spec you've found.) For £1200 it's a steal. Someone get it bought! For me... the first try I was slightly enchanted by it being such a nice bass. More jazz sounding than my main Sadowsky metro... Second try and playing them back to back (and hearing Nick play them better than I can) and my bass oddly doesn't sound like a Jazz much. Which explains why it became my main bass despite previously not liking Jazz basses sound much! For what I play I realised what I've got works better for me... I almost wish I had a reason to want a 70's jazz sound... this AtelierZ is beautiful, sounds great and for what you're getting a bit of a bargain.3 points -
I lived (yes, lived) those Bruford albums when I was a kid. Couldn't get enough of them. Love Jaco but Jeff Berlin was the bloke who captured my imagination. I think Bruford (the band) are more 'English/European/Prog Rock' influenced that Jaco's stuff which is more Funk/Jazz/Blues. I am not a massive funk fan so tended to 'hear' the melodies in Bruford more readily. I was also a Yes fan before I discovered Bruford so was into his drum concept already. Love them both but I always thought Jeff Berlin was the stronger player. Less iconic, probably, but less 'lick' based. If you listen to t a lot of Jaco, there is a lot of repetition. You don't get that so much with JB.3 points

Why recommend a used Squier? The only Squiers that better the tupical HB are the Classic Vibes, and any CV as cheap as a HB will be a severely beaten up p.o.s. The HB jazzes, precisions, etc, are easily as good as anything from the cooking Squier range, for invariably less money. The run of the mill Squiers share the same shortcomings for rather more money, so why bother? Until you've owned, lived with, and gigged a few Harley Bentons, they you can't really make such comparisons with any authority. I have, and I do.3 points

Interesting replies, although ignoring the plainly obvious that BP who originally closed a few of their garages, even if only 10, where the ones who stated it was because of a shortage of tanker drivers, and who knows, but maybe they actually are more aware of how many tanker drivers they have than other people on the internet? No argument that further problems are caused by panic buying, but there was an issue to start with, however small. And I saw a tweet that covered that too earlier: There is no fuel crisis. We just suspended competition law, drafted in the army and are in emergency talks to prevent the imminent collapse of the Stanwell Oil Refinery for a laugh.3 points

Beautiful FBass VF5 from 2008 in great condition. Very comfortable flat and fast neck. Nice passive vintage sound and more modern active sound with 3 band EQ.3 points -
