  1. Just picked up a 78 P bass and not just any old Precision, it’s my first decent bass, the one that I cut my teeth on and then sold about 33 years ago. I sold it back in the 80s when I started using active basses. I had two precisions and sold the good one as it was worth a few quid more! Always wished that I had sold the other one instead. It just came up for sale by a guy who's got a studio in Leeds. The only problem is that I paid five times what I sold it for all those years ago! I remember somebody here posting about buying back their old P bass. Like him, I’ve had a couple of precisions, but they never seemed to compare to ‘my’ old P bass. To me, Fender Precisions define what an electric bass is, despite me happily using many other basses over the years. I remember that when I originally bought this bass, I knew that I was now going to be a proper bass player! You have to remember that when I started playing, virtually all of our heroes played a precision! A few played Ricks and the odd one played a jazz bass, but me finally having my own P bass was a big thing! Quite emotional to get it back...

  2. An original on which I contributed the bassline and BVs was played this afternoon on the radio. OK, it was internet radio being broadcast from someone's back bedroom somewhere ... we're not talking Radio 2 or Capital here. But it remains my first ever radio broadcast. Box ticked. Next up? Television. 😂

  4. I get a warm fuzzy feeling inside to read these kind of comments. People just liking the bass simply because it's a great instrument. Not it's ok for the price, or it'll be ok if I change this this and this, in fact no qualification at all. Just this is a great bass oh and by the way - look at the price!

  5. So pedalboard version #$%^%$## My pedal train JNR was getting very cramped and the acquisition of some more pedals, led to an upgrade to a Classic 2. New signal chain Custom Pedal boards mini patch bay - got fed up with plugging leads into various points,so now input/output conveniently in one place. Into- Cali76 CB - I've tried most of them and love this for versatility while still being intuitive to use. It has fantastic natural tone, which just makes you sound better This then goes into the main input of a Boss LS2,so all channels are massaged by the Cali76. Ls2 Loop A - Synth Channel 3 leaf Wonderlove envelope Filter- I'm utilising the loop in this. Effects can be put after the Filter input stage, but before the Filter. This means the dynamics of the filter are preserved. In the Filter loop is the Cog T70 triple Octave - 3 channel octaves with its own loop. Two separated T65 octaves which ive set 1 for a clean smooth octave and another for a synthy octave up sound, utilising the filters. It has a third "sub" channel which has no clean just octave. The filters can get this fairly close to the OC2 sound. The loop on this enables "parallel" octave so any effects used have the octave clean underneath, in this loop I have Crowther Prunes n Custard- very very dynamic and synthy fuzz Malleko Scrutator - Bit crusher/sample rate reducer - this has a built in static low pass/Hi pass filter, which can be used with expression pedal for filter sweeps. Any control can be assigned to the expression creating very funky/electronic sounds Ls2 Loop B - Standalone effects EBS Octabass- fantastic tracking and very smooth/organic sounding octaves. A nice counterpart to the synthy T70 EHX Bass Big Muff- does what it says on the Tin MXR Bass Envelope Filter- I love this for bubbly finger funk. Does one thing very well. MXR Bass Chorus Deluxe - fantastic warm chorus/Flanger. I have it set to affect only the high end,so subtle but a lovely sound. I particularly love the Flanger setting. MXR EVH Phase 90- 2 x settings block and script. Block setting a bit grittier with more resonance (sounds great with the big muff) or script for smooth 70s tones. These two banks of effects can be run parallel via the LS2 for more tonal options. The LS2 main channel goes straight to 3 leaf Enabler - Pre amp/DI/headphone amp - primarily used was A very high quality headphone amp (with aux in). I used to have one before and used as a pre/DI on large tours/theatre pits and sound engineers always remarked on how good the DI was (not something that happens often with these guys😂) It's great for recording too, a very useful pedal. Then back to the Mini patch bay 😁 Before

  8. Many thanks for all the helpful replies guys. Much appreciated. If I haven't gone with your suggestion, it doesn't mean I've ignored it. After due consideration, I've pulled the trigger (curious phrase for buying stuff I've always thought...) on: this and this The 4i4 bundle looks good at the price (yes I know the DAWs are free anyway, but even so). I got the extra channels on the interface as I can see me using them once in a while, so I took the view that it was better to have them and not use them very often. I still have some good quality leads from my studio days, so with luck I'll be good to go. All I need now is some music to play through it...

  9. Le Grande Reveal. You can either look to see what's actually happening or go along with the gag that I'm making stinky poo up as I go along. To be honest, I have only a vague idea what I'm doing anyway.

  12. I've ordered it on Amazon Prime, so it should arrive tomorrow at a house 25 miles away in a street with a similar name. I just hope Alfie remembers his hardcore fans, those that were in from the start, when he's quaffing caviar in the sauna with Richard Branson,

  16. Purchased a TE80. Really cant fault it so far apart from its weight. Not a problem though as we bass players are made of stronger stuff. 😆. Really nice flame top, ash body. I dont know a huge amount about guitar pickups but they are Roswell single coils. No idea. Really nice satin neck. Im amazed you can get a guitar this well made for £170. Ive looked over the guitar and it is flawless. I wasnt aware this guitar was a homage to Prince,s Anderson Mad Cat.

  17. An update - Steve (drummer) was sent to East Grinstead Hospital today where they apparently specialise in reconstructive and micro surgery. He had a two and a half hour operation which was apparently fairly successful. Obviously only time will tell, and there will be 3 months of heavy duty physiotherapy also to follow. And, because of it's impactive nature, playing drums will be out of bounds for even longer than this. Poor guy, he lives for his drumming. 🙁 Thanks for all your BC kindness and good wishes, and, don't forget to take care!

  20. I’m guessing you all know what this is if you’re looking. Some big BF purchases mean I’m feeling I ought to make some cash back elsewhere and I have another pedal which does similar stuff to this (plus the new Ultrawave coming soon). In excellent condition (note a couple of light oxidation patches at the top centre of the faceplate. Comes in the original box. @AinsleyWalker

  24. Amusing name aside, they look a lot like yet another set of fashionably filthy and smashed up Fender copies to me. I'm not a Fender copy hater by any means but at what point does a market become oversaturated with countless identical clones of the oldest, most common and by now, most generic basses ever created?

  25. Zoom B1-4 is IMO the best value bass pedal available from any manufacturer, full stop! Multifx, tuner, drum machine, headphone amp (and a pants looper). I like mine so much, I've got one on my board and a spare for my gig bag.

  26. As an owner of the MB4 and former owner of the old P/bass style with baseball bat neck, I can categorically state `this ain`t no baseball bat`! I hate baseball bat type necks with a passion but this is extremely comfortable and very similar in fact to My 4 string Alpher.

  27. I just use the Animoon cheepies (there are many with different names, but all looking the same), generic Chinese things. They weigh nothing, they are usb rechargeable, cost about £20. They are great for around the house. Or would be if I could remember where I put them!

  28. Well, finally a decision: no, I won't be buying one. This is because it seems that my girlfriend is buying the MB-5 for me That tortoiseshell style pickguard has to go 'though. It's got to be black.

  29. Nice! I don't own one but here at Pirate Studios they have a few and I always liked them, but in dim light with the mirror panel... yeah, not great. Last thing I want when trying to read which knob does what is seeing a guy that looks a lot like me staring right back.

  30. Just watch out that you don't get a fine @Cuzzie. I have a Presonus interface which usually comes with a version of Studio One, which is very good. +1 for Garageband though, it's a really good bit of kit for something bundled with the OS.

  31. This is an awesome pedal imo... Albeit I've taken it off my board for a little. I use it in front of my valve amp as a boost for heavier sections and like noted above, it doesn't add colour, just more of my amp. I have the max version as I find the toggle and the eq pretty useful.

  39. I didn't save the data so this is from memory, which may of course be faulty. I agree with you about the potential 'better' performance from the red speaker. That's certainly a cleaner curve and showing 'better' damping of the hi-fi driver. Resonant frequency is lower as you would expect with a slightly heavier cone and a less stiff suspension. The sensitivity was very similar if I remember correctly, at the expense of lower excursion limits. I've met PeaTurgh and he says in this thread some of this stuff goes beyond him so I made the assumption what he wanted was a practical solution and a fun project rather than an extensive breakdown of options. I was concerned about the excessive excursion below 50Hz but wanted to show him the frequency plots so he could see the gains the hi-fi drive potentially offered for himself and ask about that if he wanted to and all of this is there in what I've said. I must admit I had reservations about recommending a £12 speaker with potential reliability issues against a speaker I had actually in a similar cab in my room in front of me. I pm'd him with a recording of my bass through the cab to see if he was happy with the sound I was getting. I'd deliberately tailored the response of my own cab and it wouldn't necessarily suit him. So yes, this was a recommendation based upon practicality. I quite like my little practice amp. the lack of bass means it doesn't annoy my neighbours, the 2db hump at 120hz gives it a gentle suggestion of bass and it sounds OK just plugged and played. Above that it's nice and clean, revealing enough to show up my every mistake which is what I need for practice. Unlike the cheap beginners amp it started out as it now sounds like a bass. The Monacor speaker would probably have sounded great with noticeable extra bass and probably survived quiet practice but i couldn't really recommend something that I thought might not be reliable long term.

  44. I've got enough digital and computerised annoyance in my life that I don't want to introduce it to other parts of my life where I don't find it beneficial. I like digital recording because it makes massive track count and good sound quality affordable (not really bothered about all the editing potential, I'd rather just nail a good vibe as live as possible). I like streaming audio at home because its freed up a lot of space now I have small people taking over our house and it allows us to play random Disney things without buying the CDs. I don't like anything with menus etc when I'm in my musician instrument-playing headspace - I want a knob or a switch to do what it does. I hate when things crash. I don't want to plug a USB into my amp. And I don't like the tendency of digital gear to become obsolete, or fail and be unrepairable. How many of us have analogue stompboxes that are decades old and still sound good? How many of us have older digital FX that we still use? Yes, digital gear can be cheaper and yes it can give more options. But unless I can see a clear benefit for how I approach music then I don't want to use it. Hopefully some musicians will have a similar viewpoint and will buy our stuff - for everyone else there are lots of alternatives!

  46. Oh my. I just read back over this thread. I have nothing but sympathy for Alex. The one thing which used to grind my gears above all else when I ran my own business was armchair experts telling me how it should be done and where I was going wrong. Trust me if you've never been through this it wears you down. Every single person thinks they're being helpful, sharing their 'wisdom' seeing the bigger picture, offering 'constructive criticism' - I heard them all over the years. But actually for the person on the receiving end of this every single one of them just sounds exactly the same as the last. Remember the Harry Enfield character? You don't want to do it like that, you want to do it like this...
