I've got enough digital and computerised annoyance in my life that I don't want to introduce it to other parts of my life where I don't find it beneficial. I like digital recording because it makes massive track count and good sound quality affordable (not really bothered about all the editing potential, I'd rather just nail a good vibe as live as possible). I like streaming audio at home because its freed up a lot of space now I have small people taking over our house and it allows us to play random Disney things without buying the CDs. I don't like anything with menus etc when I'm in my musician instrument-playing headspace - I want a knob or a switch to do what it does. I hate when things crash. I don't want to plug a USB into my amp. And I don't like the tendency of digital gear to become obsolete, or fail and be unrepairable. How many of us have analogue stompboxes that are decades old and still sound good? How many of us have older digital FX that we still use? Yes, digital gear can be cheaper and yes it can give more options. But unless I can see a clear benefit for how I approach music then I don't want to use it. Hopefully some musicians will have a similar viewpoint and will buy our stuff - for everyone else there are lots of alternatives!8 points

An update - Steve (drummer) was sent to East Grinstead Hospital today where they apparently specialise in reconstructive and micro surgery. He had a two and a half hour operation which was apparently fairly successful. Obviously only time will tell, and there will be 3 months of heavy duty physiotherapy also to follow. And, because of it's impactive nature, playing drums will be out of bounds for even longer than this. Thank you. It’s probably best to leave it as it is, it’s more honest. I think a lot of people have a very different idea of Barefaced to what it actually is. For better or worse, I’m not really financially driven, I just want to make the best possible products in the way that I believe is right. I want to make things that people use for years and years and years, I don’t want to make things that are at all disposable. From a business perceptive I am horribly cursed by a desire to not screw up this planet any more than possible - I know making speakers (the actual drivers, especially the magnets) is not environmentally friendly so I want those speakers to be really valued items that people cherish and thar even outlast me. And I also strongly believe in trying to manufacture here, creating jobs where you get to use your hands, not just poke at a computer. So because of those decisions, everything we make costs a hell of a lot to make. Everything we design takes a really long time to design (I can’t tell you how long we’ve spent on the amp so far...) We operate from an almost comically tiny factory and no-one here, me included, makes much money. Thankfully I’m not a big spender, my wife is very frugal and you can get an awful lot of things free (hurrah for sharing/freecycle groups) or cheap secondhand, and the children don’t seem to mind (yet). Last year I bought a new car because the front wheel snapped off the 15 year old one as the suspension had rusted through - and I really like cars. Well, I say new, it’s almost five years old but that’s new to me! I need to do an official announcement updating customers etc on what Barefaced is up to, but with the massive fall in orders due to the lack of live music, I now have half as many staff as in March, and the staff who are still here are only part-time and mostly furloughed. It’s really hard. I know it’s even worse for all the pro musicians who’ve lost their entire income, the events companies, the list goes on. And of course those who’ve been seriously ill, or had close friends or relatives suffer, or even die from this. I don’t know where I’m rambling with this but I guess I’m trying to say that I’m not sitting in some ivory tower making fancy products, I’m just trying to do something I believe in and earn enough to live. And because margins are fine and right now turnover is much lower than normal, I’m spread very thin trying to wear too many hats so that I can pay the rent and my mortgage and payroll and feed my family and not have to lay off more staff.5 points

For sale (not 100% sure) is this white Yamaha BB3000A, the active version, made in Japan in the mid '80s. Stunning rosewood fretboard and with only a few minor marks...very good condition and all original, except for the golden string tree. Only for sale because i can use the money. SOLD - Modulus Flea FB4, made in 2000. Aguilar OBP1 and Bartolini pickup. Also comes with the original Bartolini preamp - the Aguilar does the Flea sound so much better so is a great upgrade In used condition, has some dings, but looks great. One small ding is pictured by the fret marker - though can’t be felt when played. The body has the very common lacquer cracks by the neck, but hasn’t gone through to the wood of course Bass has no issues, sounds incredible. Does the FB4 sound like nothing else can. more seriously- I imagine there's a part of this pedal which is @alexclaber coming up with something cool with a mate and wanting to release it - just cos it's cool and exciting for him. If they are made to order then there's no real biggie if they don't sell crazy well - worst happens is nobody buys them and he just ends up designing his own pedal for himself... Cos it's fun and interesting is a reason people do things sometimes - I guess at some point Crazy Kiwi and Ped thought it would be fun to start a forum to chat about bass in the uk...4 points

Labels on the controls means greater expense as any non-English speaking place it is sold will require bespoke printing. Symbols are a great idea. Manuals in different languages can be on the website at a much reduced cost.4 points

It's the recent BE4 model that features bolt-on (5 bolts) construction, 5 pieces mahogany-maple comfortable neck on amazakoe (aka ovangkol) body in natural wood oil finish. Custom order was for the fretboard - here it's ebony with wooden (rosewood imo) dot inlays. It was made in 2007 and has the profiled/curved body profile much like in Spector or Warwick basses. Electronics is a factory-installed Bartolini JJ pups and 3 band Bartolini EQ (NTMB 918F). Original Mayones-branded gig bag goes along. Outstanding build quality, great ergonomics and very little signs of use. Shipping within EU+ possible, ask me for cost estimate. Some of you may remember how close I came to dying from it back in March. Close enough to have to make the calls to my parents, wife and kids. It wasn’t nice. Now we’re in November and I’m still suffering badly with long COVID. Only working 3 hours a day four mornings, and that’s when I can manage it. I wrote this blog a few months back and haven’t progressed since. In fact I have more symptoms now than I did and am in more pain. Similar to the CD/mp3 vs Vinyl argument I guess. (As already mentioned on this thread IIRC!) I am certainly not against modelling etc but for my basic needs I just don't need it, a basic pedalboard and amp/cab set up works. That may all change as the live music scene re-finds its feet and I decide I'm too old and stinky poo to keep doing half of what I do, but even then I'm not sure I'll ever go fully digital. We'll see. I can certainly see its benefits!3 points

I'd say good for years. They key to the sound is to find one with original speaker and original output transformer. What absolutely needs to be done for safety, great sound and reliability is - - re-cap all the power supply - clean and preserve potentiometers - remove "death cap" (can kill you someday, no joke!!!) - replace bias cap and put variable resistor for precise bias setting (on fixed bias amps) - install 3-prong grounded power cable, remove polarity switch wiring - cut the high voltage "protection" circuit from speaker cable (causes hum, can kill your speaker and output transformer, can shock you with +450V) Other things worth doing (if needed): replace the seal between cab and head, re-fit the speaker frame, clean or re-cone the speaker, change the speaker cable to 1/4" connection and good speaker wire What you should NOT do - change caps/resistors in the signal/channel circuit - they have their own sound we do love. And 99,99% times they don't need replacing. Also, don't put 6550 tubes and stuff like that, you'd kill the OT.3 points

The one thing which used to grind my gears above all else when I ran my own business was armchair experts telling me how it should be done and where I was going wrong. Trust me if you've never been through this it wears you down. Every single person thinks they're being helpful, sharing their 'wisdom' seeing the bigger picture, offering 'constructive criticism' - I heard them all over the years. But actually for the person on the receiving end of this every single one of them just sounds exactly the same as the last. Remember the Harry Enfield character? You don't want to do it like that, you want to do it like this...3 points

I’ve just started doing this myself. I bought a Focusrite 2ch for £80 ish. Thomann has a 4ch B-Stock for £163. The interface is great and I use it through JamKazam for rehearsals and Garage Band for recording. I laid down a bass part the other day and sent it off to ours keys player. He did his bit and sent it back to me yesterday. I’ll build it up bit by bit from there. I use a Shure mic for vox and in house drums in GB. Sorted.2 points

I have one too - bought it as a travel bass for the weeks I spent in London. It's great for that, although I'm sometimes asked if I have a rifle in the gig bag! I had a luthier make a thumb-rest for the neck pickup - the low profile makes it easy to miss and I kept muting the B string instead of landing on the pickup. The neck dive is a nuisance standing up, but I don't find it so much of a problem sitting down. I fitted a strap extender too and that helped, but didn't cure it. All in all, it's a nice little workhorse. Can't see myself gigging with it, though.2 points

Obviously I’ll have to rewrite that blurb because of how people are assuming it’s just a pedal for going heavy heavy but on the site I do twice mention “subtle overdrive” and also that the distortion channel can go “almost totally clean”. I should probably correct the latter to “totally clean if your bass isn’t too hot and you don’t pluck so hard” because my main basses are all LOUD and my right hand is quite heavy. The joy of pedals rather than cabs is that you can listen to far more useful sound clips. So I’ll get back to that now...2 points

Reading my posts back it potentially looks like I have an axe to grind with Sadowsky - I really don’t. I haven’t ever owned one of their basses but definitely would in future, most likely a Japanese MetroExpress! It just seems like they’ve seriously missed the ball here. Granted, COVID hasn’t made things easy for anyone but one would think that would be all the more reason to be meticulous before releasing a new product to market. In Roger Sadowsky’s partial defence, he’s been active on Talkbass and seems to be taking measures to adjust and improve these basses. For example, below is a photo of the control cavity, taken by LowEndLobster: Bit of a bird’s nest. One of the components appears to not even be fastened down (3M adhesive on the back) and look at that battery. but Roger has implemented some changes already so the cavities will now look more like this going forward: Much neater. And the battery doesn’t look quite as crusty as before. Also, the Vintage Tone Control unit will soon be available separately as an upgrade part, along with a humcancelling J pickup. Nice that these will become available but the VTC should have been a standard feature in my opinion, especially on a bass with a boost only preamp! Seem a bit mental not to have any means of rolling off treble whatsoever as standard - a tone control costs bloody pennies! This way, people will have to spend additional money on upgrade parts, plus they’ll have to find their own luthier to do the installation. A sub-£1k bass can tip over the £1k Mark at the end of all this. Can anyone tell I won’t be buying one of these??2 points

It looks like an interesting pedal. Will be checking the toob for any tests/reviews in the next couple of days. The idea of mixing od and fuzz may not be new, but adding the clean with low pass is most probably making the unit sound very proper! The combination of these aspects develops GAS tbh and I consider Alex as an honest, hard working guy.2 points

Yeah I picked up one of those a few weeks back, just didn’t think of Black Friday plus had no idea if they only had one so nabbed at the time. But ordered two of the ABM PRO-NEO 210s from PMT today, a nice saving of £95 so pretty pleased with that. And yes, a new 600 watt two-cab stack in lockdown, much needed 🤣2 points

While the % of people who catch it and die is relatively low, you might want to think of the % of people who still suffer months on with varying degrees of long covid, some with possibly permanent damage. This is the unknown entity. I caught Covid back in Feb/March and while I’m relieved to be alive and functioning, I’m still suffering with breathlessness and the inability to concentrate properly. People just need to be sensible and minimise risk where they can.2 points

The Police at the Mayfair in Newcastle, touring their first album. I had never heard of them but went along with a mate as it was a night out. Awesome is a much over used word, but they were nothing short of that. Probably the most exciting gig I have ever seen. They were so tight they were loose, and feeding off each other, improvising and scat singing. I was so impressed I bought a drum kit the following day, and 6 weeks later was doing my first gig with an originals post punk band. They were that good, and Stewart Copeland simply blew me away.2 points

@Reggaebass EDIT: forgot about one VERY IMPORTANT thing. It's a must to replace the damping material inside the cab. It's very dangerous for health (its "particles") not to mention it will mess with speaker too. Replace with foam that has qual damping factor to the factory "wool". It only needs a bit of damping. Not much. Too thick/too heavy and will mess with cab overall capacity. These all things should be done when you're serious about B15N performance.2 points

In the course of time, I'm hoping that Alex will produce an amp that has top quality components, is repairable at component level, (or at least not having to replace half the amp at similar cost to buying another amp!), is well built, sounds good but not with overly complicated controls - just all you need and nothing you don't. (A matter of opinion, I know.) And solid state - no valves. My Thunderfunk is along the lines of what I'm thinking, or maybe PJB. My Quilter seems well designed too, with quality components. But to me, the selling point would be quality, in design, build and materials. I love what Alex is doing. I was one of his first customers for the original Compact and now use a BB2, Super Midget and a pair of one10s. I'd love to complete the set with a Barefaced amp. Frank.2 points
