  1. A few months ago I was in an accident and my insurance just paid out. I have "pulled the trigger" on this duo. There is no logic to these purchases WHATSOEVER beyond the fact that after 53wks solid without a week off, the whole lockdown thing and then the accident, I just thought life's too short. Hopefully it should all be with me by early next week. Two weeks ago I was frantically trying to raise money for some impending studio costs and (momentarily) I am tripping over cash. 😻

  4. What I enjoy most about these things is the "mistakes" - the fluffed notes, loose timing and scuzzy tone which should teach us all to never let the quest for perfection get in the way of playing with passion and personality.

  5. My all time favourite is my Status Series 2 Classic but I've mainly been playing my Stingray Special for the last two years. It would be a difficult choice if I could only own one. I would probably keep the Status for playability and sentimental reasons, but the Stingray is great to play and sits in the mix better for what I currently do (when we are able to do gigs).

  6. +1! There are a zillion variants on neck shapes but the chart below is a useful guide for the most common traditional shapes. Assymetrical neck shapes are also available and can look similar to your drawing.

  8. I downloaded a spreadsheet from somewhere that detailed the positions for pickups on a variety of bass guitars. For the split P it specifies 295mm from the twelfth fret. As the Yamaha neck appears to be about three quarters of an inch longer than the Encore's, I expected to run out of room to move the pickup by the same amount. This was confirmed when I got the measurement of 295mm. I could almost get there but not quite. I really wanted to get the best from the pickup placement so I decided to remove sufficient wood for clearance at the correct position. I used a Dremel to hog out the worst of the job and finished by hand with a chisel. I am very happy with the result. I can now put the pickup where it is supposed to be with the centreline at 295mm from the twelfth fret. Time for a cuppa.

  11. Happy new to me bass day! Due to hit the doorstep at 4pm today. (Im literally beside myself with excitement. which is a good thing because if it was just me there would be no work done. The fact ther is two of me today, is making things a little easier) Gonna be playing some sweet no latency squelchy Moog synths with this badboy by sundown! *edit* for those not in the know, this bass is capable of outputting midi data to controll actual synths. this is not audio to midi conversion but the notes are triggered by a clever system that tracks our playing through the fretts themselves.

  12. Fender Mustang Bass MIJ reissue In excellent condition, comes with a Fender gig bag. I've recently noticed the tone pot is a little looser than the volume pot but neither affect the overall sound and neither pot is noisy. Bass was set up at McIntyre Guitars in Edinburgh last year. Currently strung with D'Addario Chrome Flats. Collection is preferred but I can potentially meet somewhere if need be, or buyer can organise courier (as I do have a box that will work). Buyer is responsible for any Paypal fees. SOLD

  17. Excellent bass, with a great warm woody tone. Very LOW action & very light weight. I upgraded the bass with a Fender Pure Vintage Bass Bridge, which gives a better tone / sustain. Strings can be perfectly fit to the center of the poles pieces of the pickup. Bass is strung with my strings signature (45/105) in roundwound, from Skull Strings. Bass sounds great for Pick, Slap or Fingerstyle. (Also tried it with flats & it sounds great) The bass will come with a light weight GIG Bag. (Truss rod works perfectly and frets are in excellent condition) Body : Nato Neck : Maple Fingerboard : Maple with black block inlays, 9,5 inches (Radius), 20F Pickups : Fender Designed Controls : Volume, Tone Bridge : Fender Pure Vintage bass bridge Color : Black Weight : 3,5 kg I can ship anywhere BTW

  20. You young’uns don’t know a good thing when you see it. When I started, tuition consisted of some crap books, ropey VHS videos, deciphering stuff off records/tapes and, if you were very lucky, your local teacher was half decent. It’s paid for and I don’t subscribe as I’m good as I want to be, but i would have killed for such a resource (and others online) when I was starting out.

  22. Hi all, I'm selling my Alembic MK Signature Deluxe with Coco Bolo top, so here is little about the bass. Bass has no scratch, no belt buckle scratch, it's almost as brand new, as you can see from pics. Scale: 34" String spacing: 19 mm Fingerboard: Ebony with abalone Top: coco Bolo Back: Coco Bolo Body: Mahogany with maple and purplehearth as accent woods Neck: Maple with Purple Hearth stringers Finish: clean gloss with satin finish on the neck weight: 5.7 kg (with 5 9v batteries that goes into the bass, 4x for LED) Electronics: volume, pan, 2x filters, 2x q switches, 1x LED on/off, 1/4" mono output. 23. PRICE REDUCED TO £1,800! The bass cull continues with this genuine 'one of a kind' Status originally made & customised for TM Stevens around 26 years ago. For whatever reason he didn't end up with it & it was then owned by Ashdown for about 20 years and used for testing new kit. I bought it direct from them and it's been played at a couple of rehearsals and one gig since then. Apart from one small surface scratch down the bridge, and some small buckle rash on the rear, it's pretty much perfect - certainly doesn't look 26 years old! The surface marks should be visible in the pictures below - The volume control 'sometimes' has a little scratch sound right at the end of it's travel towards off position but you have to listen very closely to hear this. It may well go with a continued bout of twisting. Some screws and bridge hardware are showing some age but I felt this just added a bit of character It has no serial number and there has been some debate between various Status experts (all of them far more knowledgeable than I) about whether it's an S2 Classic or an Empathy. Rob Green thinks it's an S2 so that's probably a safe bet. Here's what Ashdown said about it: "This S2-Classic is the ultimate combination of traditional and modern guitar design. Made in the 80's built for TM Stevens and painted by a top German artist. TM Stevens never actually ended up with the bass instead it found its way into our possession around 20 years ago and has been one of our go to test basses. Woven carbon graphite and selected exotic woods are combined to create a bass which sounds even better than it looks. It has a wide, even frequency response with huge dynamics and sustain." Note that the artist signature appears to be Andi Graphic Art 94 - this would suggest it's a bit newer than the Ashdown estimate but that 94 may not be the date it was made and/or have nothing to do with that at all. Could just be the 94th piece of custom artwork etc. It has the classic Status electronics with the sweepable mid boost/cut switch and sounds just like a Status should - great cut through that sits in a live mix really nicely. Happy to post anywhere in the UK / EU at cost - probably £25 UK & £40 EU (both with insurance).

  24. Selling my 2006 Dennis Galuska Masterbuilt P-bass, based on a '68 'Telecaster' bass. I'm told that this was originally made for the bassist for Athlete, back in the day. I bought this on a bit of a whim but have realised its far, far too nice for me - I can't do it justice and feel like a bit of a fool playing on something so nice!! First thing to note is the weight - mostly due to the super premium ash, the whole bass weighs 7lbs 8oz, which is insane when you consider that it's a slab body! It strikes meevery time I pick it up; it's lovely and balanced and you can wear it for hours without getting tired (unlike most slab-bodied precisions). It's also incredibly resonant. This is the magic of Masterbuilt guitars - the base materials were hand-picked and matched by one of Fender's best and it shows. Neck is a great shape too. A very soft "V" at the lower frets, going into a "C" by 12 and onwards. It feels very natural, and has clearly been expertly hand-carved for comfort. Frets are in great condition and a very low action is achievable (although I wouldn't recommend it!). Custom "block" inlays were also specified as part of the original order, with Ron Thorn (the current head of Fender's custom shop) specifically requested to do them. The work is top-notch - no filler whatsoever and perfect in every way. Nice and subtle too - I'm not usually a fan of block inlays but these look awesome. Finish is a lovely white relic - the spec has this as "super heavy" and "extreme" and it shows on the body! Lots of checking, dings and wear - it feels and looks very played in. On the sound - it's bloody amazing. It's honestly the best sounding p-bass I've ever heard. Think of ANY recording with a full-on p-bass tone and this does it to a tee. Can go full-on snarly precsion growl, or laid-back Pino groove. And super resonance, sustain and clarity all over the neck. The tone on this has a centre detent and acts a bit like a tbx tone control giving enormous versatility. All original save for (i) the machineheads, which have been replaced with Fender-sourced new ones (the g-string head was at some point replaced with a smaller version, so there are four tiny holes under the metal); and (ii) the case, which is a replacement Fender case. All in all the best P-bass you'll ever play, hands-down. This is light-years ahead of regular Custom Shop pieces and it shows, from the feel to the sound. I need a quick sale on this because of another incoming, so I am pricing at £3200. Equivalent basses are up on Reverb etc. for £4-6k. Needs to be sold quickly, however, or I will take it down. I'm in NW London or can ship, fully insured, for £50. I will also take px if need be - just let me know what you've got!

  25. Hi everyone, This is a pretty reluctant feeler. If someone wants to bite my hand off for it, ill let it go but otherwise ill keep it. This started life as a Fender Pawnshop Mustang Bass, with the big old mudbucker rather than a standard Mustang Pickup. I found it muddy and indistinct, so replaced the pickup and pickguard. The pickguard started life a mirrored gold pickguard from WD Music and I scuffed it up to make it less reflective. The current pickup is a Aero Mustang, but formerly it was a Nordstrand NM4 (which i still have and can include in the sale for £50), the Aero is a little smoother sounding than the Nordy, but they're similar. This feels exactly like my MIJ Mustang did, I had them both at the same time and preferred this one so sold the MIJ. Its a fantastic sounding and playing bass but two Bass VIs and a Gibson as well as a 32" Squire jag, I've got about all the short scales i need at the moment. SOLD

  26. A Big brother for my Mb2. I've been hankering after one for some time now, but with Rob's policy now of only making what suits his business, as opposed to what customers dictate (which is fair enough if he is able to do it), and the rarity of secondhand ones available the likelihood of me getting one looked pretty slim - especially considering my very specific requirements (fretless, unlined, min 17mm string spacing). I just thought I would try my luck on the Owners' Facebook page, and lo and behold I got lucky, a great guy in Italy responded, we did a deal and I am now the proud owner of a Deep 5 to go with my Mb2 4 string. I must admit I was slightly twitchy about sending a not insignificant sum of money to a complete stranger in a foreign country, but I trusted my luck to PayPal's compensation policy and bit the bullet. Antonio turned out to be a really great guy and the bass was in my hot little (actually big) hands within a few days and I couldn't be more pleased. Initially the action was too low for me - lots of lovely Mwah but not much attack and rather inclined to buzz on the low B, but a half turn on the truss rod did the trick and all is now great. This now means there will be no real point in having any other 5 string basses, so I'll be selling a couple of very nice ones soon in the form of a Shuker Artist 5 and Rick Turner Renaissance 5. Probably when things have normalised a bit more and hopefully the Bass community will be more comfortable spending money on bass guitars.

  30. I have a lot of fun putting bitsa basses together - nothing high end, just grafting orphaned necks onto bodies and playing around with spray paint - that sort of thing. I always put on a "Fender style" headstock sticker as I think headstocks look a little bit weird if they're left blank. Generally, I use waterslide decals, but I find them to be very hit and miss - sometimes they go on perfectly, but more often than not, it takes me multiple attempts to get something I'm happy with. Looking for alternatives, I found an eBay seller - morphiuscraftsuk which does cheap and cheerful, die cut stickers. I ordered the "Fender style" version and although it wont fool anyone (which isn't really the point...), I thought it looked rather good. I got back to them to do another sticker in a font which they didn't advertise on the site and they came back straight away with a number of options. I ordered it, and part II came today. Once again, it looks ace. Customer service was incredibly good, especially as the items were so cheap. Total cost: 2 x £1.49 If you're lovingly recreating a 1963 Fender Jazz, this isn't the product for you. If you're using up those bits from the parts box and you want a quick, no mess logo to finish it off, this might be a viable option. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/323769332446?ul_noapp=true

  32. I also have all the Queen isolated tracks, and I thought that can't possibly be John Deacon playing the bass because it sounded harsh and quite messy, but when I put all the tracks together in my DAW, it sounded perfect in the mix, and I thought the same about John Entwistle's isolated tracks. I have to say that hearing these isolated tracks helped my confidence because I had always doubted my tones and playing ability until recently when I started doing some recording at home, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well my bass sits in the mix, and my playing was more than acceptable for someone who plays mainly for fun. 😉

  33. The OP reminded me of a NYE gig that I did out UAE. Bruno had just dropped and was pretty hot... and so naturally, the band I was in decided we should follow suit and learn the moves etc. So we did. At the end of the gig, this guy comes up to me and says, "You know what son, when I closed my eyes, I could have sworn with groove like that, the bass player was a brother. Then I saw you dance. Yeah man, you white." - Turned out he was the Mayor of Dallas(? - it was something like that) and one of the funniest, most charming guys I've met. Had us in stitches - and he even went back to his room to fetch one of his prize football shirts to give to the singer as a sign of his appreciation.

  34. When I was doing my University project back around '97 I asked my dad if he could find an old Betamax machine and tapes as he was (and still is) an absolute car boot sale addict. Even then it was hard to get them but he came good, and there were a good number of tapes for me to experiment with. I plugged up the machine, tried the tapes, and realised he had purchased someone's entire pornography collection.... (When I say experiment, I meant I wiped the tapes as quick as I could......honest guv......)

  35. Some years I got multitracks to a number of Queen songs and I am delighted to say the DI bass tracks are refreshingly as bad as if I'd played them. Add in the mic'd 4x12 and the 1x18 and it all sounds wonderful.

  38. About a month ago I picked up a black 'Melody' acoustic. Italian brand bought out by Eko and branded as Eko in the late 60s/early 70s, and then back to Melody in the early 80s until they ceased production in '89. It plays beautifully and has a surprisingly pleasing tone. The seller was told it was 60s but it's in just too good a condition to be 60s so I'm assuming it's an 80s one when the Melody brand was used again, although some oddball Eko's were sold as Melody's in the 70s. It's possible/likely that these were contracted to be built in the far east and some no name examples were produced and sold through other outlets. I'm also sure I've seen an Ovation with the three small holes under the strings and f holes, which this would obviously then be a copy of. A little about Melody guitars here, https://www.fetishguitars.com/castelfidardo-recanati/melody/

  40. Yes, there have been quite a few cases of designers underestimating how much effort goes into a successful design. This is especially true where the SMPS and the amplifier work together to improve performance even more as a pair. I know how difficult it is to design reliable SMPS and class D amps, I've done it a few times and it took longer and cost more than I expected every time. Ultimately, even though I have the background and education to do so, I simply couldn't compete with the depth of highly specialized talent that IcePower has in-house. The smart decision (IMO) was to partner with the best designers in the world and exploit their strengths as well as have input into their evolution of new products. Sometimes it better to put ego aside and keep your strengths for where they can make the greatest contributions.

  41. Actually, the bigger problem is the end users who think they understand what the data sheets mean without actually understanding the technical data behind the numbers and WHY they might be used in describing specific specs. When an experienced designer learns all of the ins and outs behind the performance of the module and what is actually happening between the lines, it becomes apparent that there are additional performance gains present to those who understand how to exploit them. As a specific example, when I was designing around an earlier IcePower module, we used to get "armchair techies" who would insist that the module wasn't capable of driving 4 ohms BTL and that it was was only capable of 250 watts into 4 ohms therefore we were not being truthful. In fact, the amp could easily deliver 900+ watts RMS into 4 ohms BTL, and that the 250 watt single ended specification didn't even apply. This was such a valuable off sheet applications (that required specialized cooling and over-modulation management) that we received a patent for the techniques that we employed. It's very similar to what's happened in the automotive industry over the years. Power output per cubic inch (or litre) of displacement has increased greatly through the introduction of fuel injection, variable valve timing, variable ignition timing, stoichiometric fuel management through combustion products feedback, advanced combustion chamber design, tighter tolerances, lighter reciprocating mass, etc. The same applies to many of the successful applications in all industries. The more you know, the easier it is to be successful and deliver successful, reliable products.
