  1. For Sale Fender Custom Shop Classic Jazz Bass, 4 String, White Blonde 2010 4.1kg Rosewood fretboard with a 'highly desirable' and stable quarter sawn neck. 18v active with Noiseless Pickups capable of a wide range of Jazz tones. Sale includes Custom Shop certificate (as pictured), Fender case and case candy. The Bass has been gigged only a handful of times. The neck is immaculate, with no visible wear and absolutely feels like new. There are a couple of small dinks in the body which are pictured. It's strung with Elixir strings with plenty of life still in them with a lovely low action. Reason for sale, I need to drum up some cash. I'll be very sad to see it go. Collection preferred around the Margate, Kent area or perhaps another meet up location. Can ship with insured courier at buyers expense. Questions welcome, many thanks.

  2. It’s been a while, but lockdown has really got me playing properly again. I had one of these about five years ago but (regrettably) let it go as part of a part ex on another P. I’ve been keeping half an eye on eBay for the last few months to see if one would come up again, and on Sunday night my wish was granted! A White, active USA SUB, delivered to my door in short order, and it’s full of unmistakable Stingray zing, and I love it! It’s basically immaculate apart from a bit of wear on the paint which is understandable for something of this age. Very happy.

  3. So........Started with a slab of ash Did some shaping by hand with a spoke shave, Shinto saw and finished off with a router and orbital sander To 3000 grit (not even though) - belly cut and forearm contour to my spec for where I rest my hands - thanks to @Jabba_the_gut for telling me how to do a neck pocket. Dartfords black grain fill and sealed so when it naturally relics older looking wood will come through. Decided on doing a blood orange colour - again Dartfords have awesome nitro spray cans, I deliberately wanted some grain to show. Hipshot B style bridge, Seymour Duncan 51 P stack pick up (same as in fender dusty hill bass and their 51 P reissue Custom shop), tonestyler bass ten to be fitted. Pickguard is a normal white P one shaped to what I fancy, @Deedee kindly sent a black 51 pickguard which I may also use but I will have to shave back the neck pocket part (no hassle), or bare, I can choose depending on my outifit. Maple neck from same factory as Allparts get theirs, but cheaper and will be Hipshot ultralites (again thanks Deedee for the trade) Thats the latest parts bass - should pop it together this weekend hopefully!

  4. Well a pristine Ibanez SRH500 turned up on the doorstep this morning at 08:27. Double boxed with padding between boxes and the bass inside the original Ibanez box, well done PMT and DPD. Funny to think that Andertons wanted me to pay exactly the same for an ex-demo SRH500 with significant cosmetic damage, as a discount they offered me £30 off and a free lead, turns out all SRH500s come with a free lead anyway, that’s Andertons off the Xmas card list. The bass is very light and has that quality way beyond price point thing about it. It also has a slim fast neck that all my previous Ibanez SR models seem to have that makes it extremely easy to move around. With the absence of pickups, the dusty end of the neck Is shaped in such a way that it can be used as a comfortable thumb rest. The flatwound strings sound surprising bright acoustically, the only odd thing is how scratchy they feel against the fret when bending the strings, *shudder*. It came set up beautifully, probably a bit high for low action fanatics but about right for me. Looking forward to playing it through the QSC later and hearing how it sounds. Such bliss to have a just two controls, tone and volume.

  5. It seems someone has simply ploughed through YouTube and found all the Peel sessions they could and then, brilliantly, put together this superb resource! https://davestrickson.blogspot.com/2020/05/john-peel-sessions.html

  8. From the Lakland golden era, 2007 USA Lakland Decade with the original Fred Hammon hand-made Darkstar pickups. Amazing, one of a kind tone. Incredible playability. Naturally worn, honey coloured neck. You will not see many like this one for sale. Birdseye maple fingerboard, mahogany body. The bass has been professionaly refinished in Nitrocellulose, Olympic white with matching headstock. Electronics are 2 stacked knobs (tone and volume, one per PU) and a 3-way switch (mid-boost, neutral and bass boost). Tonal possibilities are endless, especially for a passive bass. Confortable weight at 4,2 kg, OHSC included. Price is 2500 Eur. No trades, Thanks.

  9. This came today. I needed a specific bass for a new tribute band and these looked a good option. By chance I saw one in the local shop last week, was so impressed I asked for a test play and was sold there and then. Now, we hear a lot about music shops dying out, but i really have to stick up for my local one here. They didnt have the model i wanted in stock, but went out of the way to order it for me from Europe. The timescale was exact (a week). They gave me a ring this afternoon to say it had arrived and when i got there they kindly asked if i just wanted to take it and whether i would like to open it and check everything was ok. They hooked it up to an amp in the shop then gave it a check over, tested it for buzzes and defects, then adjusted the truss rod to the perfect tension. All for free. All part of the service. If it had just come in the post from a mail order company he said it would have been poor to play as there was no tension in the neck at all. So, a big plus for buying from a physical shop. Anywho, on to the bass.... The build quality is perfect. Ideal weight, solid but not heavy, great finish and plays beautifully. Very resonant acoustically. The Pau Ferro fretboard is nice. Andertons described it as feeling a bit springy, and although it's perfectly solid, the analogy kind of works. It's very nice to play though, and sound nice. There is plenty and I mean plenty of difference between the tone off and on. From dubby 60s vibe to full on clarity. As part of the tribute look I needed a tort plate. I ordered one form mail order shop for £15. I had seen you need a 13 hole for a Mexican fender, and this proved right. It's a near perfect fit and only took 10 minutes to swap. Cant wait to fire it up tomorrow.

  10. And so to the shape of the sides blank. Normal warning as with all my threads - I describe what I do and why...but never assume this is how or the best way it should be done I start off with a rectangular sheet of cartridge paper taped so that it follows the outer shape of one of the sides in the mould. The bottom edge represents where the top will be and the top edge where the bouzouki back will be: So eyeballed edge on, this is how it looks: In broad terms (there are foibles I'll cover in later posts), edge on like this, we will want the back to go from 105mm (plus the top and back at 5mm total will give a final tail end depth of 110mm) to 85mm at the heel (total heel depth ending at 90mm) in roughly a straight line. So what I do is mark the 105 at the back and 85 at the front, and pack up a straight edge to that angle: I then run a metal ruler at 90 degrees to and along the top of the beam and mark spots on the paper all the way from the tail to the heel: So I then end up with a series of dots all the way along the paper which I join up and then cut out with scissors. And, although this is not perfect, it is close enough to be able to use as the basis of fitting the back at the appropriate time: And stretched out, you can seen that this is a million miles away from a straight line between the two points: And - although it is very subtle, I can see the concave curve at the heel end, changing to a convex curve at just under halfway - which makes me think that my attempt is at least in the right ball-park So next job is thicknessing the sides to 1.9mm and then cutting them to this shape - and then the scary bending can begin

  17. I'm in a blues/rock band and a pub/party/wedding covers band plus other loose arrangements for dep gigs. Honestly, I think most popular bass guitars can play most styles of music. Yes, they are all a bit different but not by so much that would rule out using say, a jazz style bass, for everything. This is just my opinion based on many years of playing and owning (too) many basses. Frank.

  19. It slightly misses the point that if these young people though less susceptible become carriers, they are likely to have parents, relatives, grandparents, workmates in the vulnerable or over 60 group. Yes they may not be affected, but others may and probably will be if it is spread around As mentioned earlier on these posts, it’s not just fatalities, the the morbidity which can be life long. This remains a difficult problem. I don’t have the solutions, but all angles need to be considered

  20. NOW SOLD - Putting my Fender Squier Vintage Modified 5 String up for sale - I bought it from here a few years ago, these are cracking Indonesian-made instruments and I have further heavily upgraded it with the following: US Standard Precision pickup Hipshot A style FM3 bridge Hipshot Ultralite tuners to cure the slight neck dive it had Upgraded CTS pots, switchcraft jack, wiring and Orange Drop cap US Standard Precision knobs Schaller strap lock buttons Most importantly the 'Squier' headstock decal and neck plate haven't been replaced! Over £350 of upgrades in total, and it sounds and plays brilliantly with that classic punchy P Bass tone and a great sounding and articulate B string. I've just come to the conclusion that I'm not a Fender guy and my Warwick is getting all the love sadly. String spacing at the nut moves from 11mm (B to E centres) to 9.5mm (D to G centres) with a 47mm wide nut. String spacing at the bridge is 18mm by default but each saddle can be adjusted to widen or narrow the spacing by up to 1.5mm. Weight is a very light 8.6 lbs. I've had a good look all over for dings and there are two small marks on the bottom of the back by the waist; as well as two small scratches - one on the upper face of the top horn and one on the bottom face of the lower horn, these haven't gone through the black though and you have to be in just the right light and be really looking to notice them (the bottom one I couldn't get to show up in a photo) Comes with a Warwick gigbag that has the odd battle scar but does a great job of keeping what's inside safe. I'll also include all the original Squier parts so if you really want to you can return it to stock and make a profit selling on the upgraded parts! Looking for £300 collected, or I'm happy to meet up somewhere close to Dartford in Kent, or ship at the buyers expense/risk - I've never shipped a bass before so have no idea what it costs, but can get some quotes if necessary. Not looking for any trades thanks unless you have a bolt-on 5 string Warwick Streamer (not the flat Rockbass models).

  22. With my unprolific career as a bassist slowly coming to an end I’m clearing out some bits to fund a new 6 string acoustic. This is a Guild Starfire II from the Newark Street Collection in mint condition. An awesome playing and sounding bass, I’ve had it set up with TI Jazz flats. Comes with original hard case. I also have the original round wounds. £750. Collection much preferred from Beccles, Suffolk, or I could potentially meet somewhere. I have a box so postage could be a last resort. Cheers.

  23. I was actually very close to changing the spec of mine (mid-build queue) after I saw him play at Jazz Cafe with Forq. For me, I’m not aware of anyone building true 60’s spec Fenders (less the ebony fingerboard) for this price. YJ has even researched his own metallurgy mix for the hardware to match Fenders recipe. They’re a good grand cheaper than Custom Shop. I was also swayed somewhat by Tim Lefebvre and Kevin Scott using them as their main instruments Si

  26. For a £60 bass it was pretty decent, although I found the pickup a bit microphonic which is a shame as it sounded good. I still have one. I turned it to fretless and put a Model P pickup on it. I sold three other fretless basses and kept this one. It just works and makes all the right noises, so I'm pretty happy with it.

  35. Selling one of two Roadworn Fender Precision basses. This is for the Fiesta Red one, great basses and quite sought after. Great condition, besides the factory relic'ing! It has had the neck sanded very very lightly, just to lose some of the sticky lacquer feel. Based near Yeovil in Somerset. Looking for £775.

  37. Lots of people play with French bows. Lots of people play with German bows. People play 124, people play 1234. People sit down to play, people stand up to play. People use really sticky rosin. People use violin rosin. People use gut strings. People use Spiro Weichs. The Double Bass is quite young in terms of pedagogy compared to Vln/Vla/cello. Do what works for you.

  38. People are talking as if the only options are more of the same until a vaccination comes along or allowing a few more tens of thousands of deaths, mainly of the elderly, diabetics and BAME people. This just isn't true. Plenty of other countries with a short sharp lock down, sensible hygiene measures and aggressive test, track and trace have got infection rates down to well below other seasonal diseases and have had days, sometimes weeks with no Covid related deaths. If we did the things South Korea or New Zealand did then not only would more people be alive today but there would be nothing special to be frightened of, the economy could have restarted by now and we'd all be able to get out gigging. We didn't do those things, the governments own advisors are predicting a second wave of infection, no end is in sight and our excess deaths are amongst the worst in the world. Not a political point, we'll never know how a Corbyn government would have done but it didn't need to be like this. This is about competence. Apparently as rare as PPE.

  42. Moollon P classic in Root Beer Sparkle. P classic with J neck, gorgeous player! I love the colour, although I haven't yet compared it with actual root beer as the Co-op only had Dr Pepper: Really pleased with it, very high quality craftsmanship throughout. Looking forward to stringing it with incoming La Bellas as I'm on a lockdown Jamerson journey! Will record some tones when I get the chance.

  45. I bought one, blue with a rosewood board. Did it really to help the charity but the bass turned out to be pretty good, especially for the price. Sold it on here ( I think) to a happy buyer. Haven’t seen any since for some reason, maybe people mainly kept them, like I should have done!

  46. By 'width', I meant the width between the frets; some capos would be too wide to fit between the frets above the octave, maybe earlier, just by the fret spacing reducing as one goes up the neck. Of course, I do realise that many bass players are unaware of this, having never dared to go past the fifth fret. ...

  47. Superb example of Mark's work. From Limelight: Limelight 00180 was ordered as a bit of a custom hybrid. Generally it had 1970's features ("F" neck plate with rubber bumper, plus 1970's Big TV logo with tinted headstock face and spray over the logo - we tend to tint the headstock faces a little darker on the 1970's ones as that is how they tend to go with age) The purple colour was never offered by Fender was but was ordered especially (over a white base coat - I thought it turned out pretty well) It was also ordered with both chrome covers (Genuine Fender, aged to match) and the gold anodized guard was from the 50's and an extra cost option as well. The bass was finished 9th June 2016 so just over 4 years old. It has also been fitted with a Stellartone Tonestyler which has a 10 - position knob to give you very accurate tone changes & much more flexibility especially in the mids. You can find details on Google & they are available from Bass Direct for about £110. Very comfortable to play & everything works as it should. Looks great under lights, the purple over white really stands out & it thumps like a good P-Bass should Comes with a virtually new Hiscox case, width at the nut is 38mm, weight is 4.25kg [ 9.4lb ] but doesn't feel that heavy. Don't really want to sell this but current playing conditions and advancing age mean that I need to cut down a bit on gear, so not looking for trades, there's nothing I want! Will listen to offers but please be realistic! Can ship but would prefer buyer to arrange their own courier. Have got suitable box to send it
