  2. Hi All, Up for sale is my 1961 slab board Fender Precision Bass with its OHSC. I have owned a number of P basses stretching over its long years of production and in my opinion, this period are the finest. Overall, it is in great condition with the dinks, dongs, scratches, playwear etc etc you might expect. The sunburst is still really vibrant and it plays with a low action all the way up the neck. There are a couple of very small areas on the body rear which have been rather crudely touched up and the rear of the neck has possibly been re-finished, it is difficult to tell but let's assume yes. The rest of the bass is stock with neck date 10-61, pot dates 35th week of 61 and body pencil date May 61. The original case is in terrific condition. Feel free to PM me with any questions or to arrange to view / play with no obligation. I live near Woking in Surrey. Cheers, Si

  3. Just that really. We are in a great position to cope better than most. We have a community here to talk to and something we love doing but never get enough uninterrupted time at. I'm planning to sort out all my hundreds of chord sheets and tabs and get them to our top floor, make sure I have plenty of rechargeable batteries for my zoom and my best headphones at the ready. My three best basses will go up and the computer and an mp3 player, then I'm entirely self sufficient and can play without waking the street. For fun I'm intending revisiting songs I haven't played for years. Our band wants to go down a soul/funk route, something that I've never played, it was going to take me months to learn a new style with a few techniques to add to the flimsy armoury I currently have. If I can find time my music theory is shocking, I need to work on my speed, hell, I could even learn the dusty bit of the fretboard. Two octave runs..... (I wonder if I can fake a cough and get extra isolation time ) For me bass is all the 'wellness' I need. The man cave my safe space. the best anti inflammatory I can get. Guilt free time on Basschat as well. What will you do?

  4. POSTPONEMENT CONFIRMATION With much regret - but no hesitation - I hereby confirm that the 2020 Big Fat South-West Bass Bash is postponed until (hopefully) later this year. I will talk to our hall manager today to establish the position re fees already paid and try to book a provisional date for Autumn. Thanks to all who have offered financial support, but I am hopeful that neither us Scrumpies nor you very fine and generous people will lose out. WATCH THIS SPACE! Mike & Gabs

  5. I recently went into my local GuitarGuitar looking to buy a decent mic, which I did! However, while wandering about the store, admiring all the pretty basses I couldn't afford, I spied this 'creation', finished in shiny orange, hanging in the 'Used Instruments' section of the shop. I wandered closer, checked the price - 'Hmmm, reasonable!' So I took it off the wall hanger and sat down with it... And suddenly everything just clicked... the world fell into place... my reason for being a bass player - nay, my reason for being - became clear; it was simply to sit down with this utterly bizarre shiny orange creation, and play it! Ultimately, I bought it! So, what did I buy? Well, I bought an orange MusicMan Bongo HS 5-string! Bwaaahahahahahaaaa! 🤣 Oh my god, it's the freaking best bass I have ever played. The looks may not be to (most?) people's taste, but jeez this thing is freaking amazing! It's so versatile with the range of sounds you can coax out of the 4-band, 18v preamp (I'm not overly enamoured with the hi- and lo-mid EQ stack, been mostly using the pickup blend and the bass / treble EQ stack); the bass hangs perfectly - no neck-dive at all; the neck is really nice(a wee bit thin front-to-back compared to previous 5's I've owned, but I adapted almost instantly); it's not overly cumbersome (haven't weighed it yet); and it's shiny and orange! 😁 (well, Desert Gold according to the EBMM Serial Database!) When I first saw the MM Bongos, I seriously wondered who had lost their mind, and I never in a million years thought I'd ever own one, but this thing may seriously end up being my only bass, it's that good! Buy one! They're grrrrrreat!

Click this link to sign the petition: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/304282/sponsors/new?token=vwkEfHvmH3GV3zLziKvN ——— My petition: Formally ban mass gatherings in Theatres, Venues, Restaurants and Bars, etc The Prime Minister has asked people to stay away from mass events including entertainment, cultural and hospitality venues; however by making this voluntary rather than mandatory, these venues are unable to claim insurance for closure, making their situations untenable. By formally closing venues, they can claim insurance meaning employees, casual workers and others dependent on their operation can receive compensation for their loss of work, allowing them to survive in these difficult times. Encouraging customers to boycott them means empty venues, no income for owners, and therefore no way to pay workers. 8. It is here, when the girl on the phone said it wasn't as blue as the pics suggested she wasn't lying..... it's green! It's also quite a nice shade of green so it won't be getting sent back because of the colour. Here it is, yet to plug it in but acoustically the B string sounds good. Fingers crossed!

  9. After an eight-month wait, I just picked up one of these (from GAK). Seems nice. The neck is gloss, and not super chunky (front to back). Compared to the original "70s Classic Vibe" series (going on spec here - never owned one myself): the main reason I got it: walnut colour! (previously only available in black) body wood is nato (previously basswood); my cheap digital kitchen scales claim 3.76kg which is nice nut is slightly wider at 1.685" (previously 1.650") I like the new larger "TV" logo no tugbar or bridge cover saddles are no longer brass I think knobs changed from slightly rounder ones to now the proper flat-top ones.

  10. Thunder 1-A. A pretty crap picture that doesn't properly reflect the beautiful rich cherry-ness of the red. It really is a looker, this thing. And yes, I fitted gold tuners. It seemed aesthetically odd having chrome ones when the rest of the hardware was brass. I await the "eww, gold hardware" pitchforks.

  11. Well the center point does yes, so obviously if the center is set below 45Hz then it will affect the LPF but don't forget that it will also affect frequencies to either side of the center. Tech 21 don't seem to quote the q, which is the width of the filter, but let's take a look. Here's a 10dB boost at 143Hz but you can see that even there it's having a slight affect on 45Hz (the pale blue '1' line). This is with a q of 2, which is half an octave. So here's a 45Hz high pass filter. With another eq boost miles away at 1200Hz they aren't affecting each other. But move that same boost down to the 40Hz that your Qstrip is capable of and you can see how that's massively affected the filter. It is the same 45Hz high pass filter but if I had to eyeball guess I'd say the new -3dB point is about 33Hz. Of course, we don't know how wide the Q is on the Q strip. Choice of filter width is what separates a semi-parametric eq like the q-strip from a fully-parametric eq. The q-strip is fixed (as there's no bandwith control) but we don't know what it's fixed at. it may actually vary depending on where the other controls are set. Generally in eqing we want narrow cuts to get rid of unwanted boom or feedback and broad boosts to add in things we want more of, but this is just a huge generalisation. All of this has been done assuming a q of 2, what happens if we widen that? If your q-strip has a q of 0.5 on the mid controls then we can move that control all the way up to 150Hz or so and it's still BOOSTING at 45Hz, despite the hpf. It's even having a tiny effect at 863Hz! I know I'm not making this simpler, but that's because it's not simple. Tech21 were right, twiddle until it sounds good.

  12. First of (we expect) many phone calls received from our theatre venues last night cancelling this Friday's gig.... Disgusting the way this Govt is treating the entertainment/hospitality community. Venues will go under and people will hit the breadline all because they are having to 'voluntarily' close/stop working... So angry with Cummings/Cooper and their cronies right now.... !!!

  13. My basses are all now practising social isolation, and are kept on wall hangers at least two metres apart. But the real plague carriers are the valve amps ... dodgy characters with a dubious past, and they smell funny too.

  17. P7 arrived today! First impressions - very positive. A shade under 10 lbs (4.5kg = 9.9 lbs) which is fine and comfortable to 'wear'. The EQ is very versatile. Having a tone knob in addition to a 3 band EQ allows you to dial in a lot of variety. My preference is for the tone knob to be at around 8/10 which gives quite a sweet tone. The treble has a decent range from cut to boost. The bass EQ is just huge and needs, if anything, to be cut slightly otherwise it's going to dominate (and not in a good way!). Will need to get my head around the mids with a semi para range of 80 Hz to 2 kHz. Key annoyance for me are the two stacked pots which are 'sticky' with each other and dialling the bottom also moves the top - another excuse to replace these as well as their slightly cheap plastic appearance. In terms of the pups, I sense this bass is going to be mainly used in solo P, which I really like btw, occasionally J and hardly ever P+J blend, which feels a little insipid. So this bass provides a very nice set of complementary options to my purely passive Yammy PJ, which I typically use in either P+J or solo J these days. The active P on the Sire cuts through on the low B really well and won't, I suspect, require me to switch to the solo J which I do on my Yammy. As a PJ bass, it is in many ways a better stable mate to have alongside my Yammy BB1025 rather than it's sibling BB735A, which whilst active had many similarities tonally / pups / feel etc. So overall a big thumbs up in terms of very initial impressions and this will, when they start happening again(!), likely be a regular feature at our gigs.

  18. I think 14 days would be just about long enough to work out what the holy hell all those knobs and switches do...plus, I'd be sitting/lying down, so the mahooosive weight wouldn't be so much of an issue...

  20. I have already said to Mrs2611 this is an ideal opportunity for me to spend time improving on the bass, she did suggest that I could teach her to play the guitar whilst we are isolated......I have said that is a terrible idea as I doubt isolation would be seen as a defence for a murder charge.....I jest, but I still am not teaching her

  23. I've already ticked the 'Thanks' thingy on the right, but it doesn't seem enough, so 'Thanks' again, for sharing this link, and a shed-load of 'Thanks' to the musicians making music like this, with the fantastic bonus of making it available as a free download in these strange times. One may contribute, naturally, and it's worth giving back if one can. We're away from the 'normal' (can one say that of these Masters..?) renderings, closer to (but distant from...) the 'Shakti' era than 'Birds Of Fire', and present a refreshing aural bath for ears too often assailed by 'pop' tunes and empty advertising themes. This stuff will never (unfortunately..?) become mainstream; it'll not be played over any FM station I've ever heard (although John Peel would certainly have reserved it a fair chunk of air-time...), so lap it up whilst it's offered. Do yourselves a favour, and, even if it doesn't fit your listening right now, don't just junk it. Give it another go in a year or so, then again, and again. One fine day (or evening; whatever...) it'll 'click'. Quality will out; just give yourselves time to show itself to you. Great Stuff. @ambient : Just a 'heads up'; I thought that you might like to give this a go. I might be wrong; if so, apologies.

  24. And I’m a spy and international playboy my hobby is torturing environmentalists by making endless flypasts of their homes in a particularly noisy private jet and dumping spare fuel/“blue ice” on them, although i tend to save the latter for annoying teenage ones. If it lands on a draft speech About how “the planet is burning” I shout “bullseye!” On Twitter @them. If I also dumped spare fuel they might find out that they were right all along, their bit of the planet suddenly is burning

  27. Not quite sure how to describe this bass, but I suppose the best description would be " similar in concept to a '62 replica Limelite " Built by a guy named Alan Knight, known more for his distressed guitar replica's, but he sure knows how to build a winner . It simply play's itself , sounds great, and for the benefit of those ( of us ) with a bad back, really light and well balanced. You do have to be into " heavy relic" to appreciate it's looks, but this is the bass that first made me realise that distressed and relic'd can look good. It's Worth noting that the Fender logo on the headstock is for effect, this is not a Fender product. I have no info on the pickups, just know they sound good. Best to check over the pics for any further info. Collection only from Worthing or Chichester, and no trades, thank you.

  29. It depends on the strings and the action height, @Jimothey but for the bottom E, to be sure you need to allow for around 5mm longer than the scale length. The G will be close to scale length - maybe scale length plus 1mm. You also don't want the bottom string saddles too far back if you are going for a top loading option as you might find that the string bindings end up going over the saddles. So yes, you may be able to stagger them a bit but, as @fleabag says, you will need to be careful not to compromise function for form

  33. Plenty of options here. Aside from my '66 Precision, the P bass that I gig regularly is the Highway One iteration. I've has a few different versions over the years (Squier Affinity, MIM, MIJ, Nate Mendel, American Special, American Standard) but this one seems to be sticking. Hard to say why particularly but the neck is great, the weight is very comfortable and I must be one of the only people in the world who quite likes the Grease Bucket tone circuit. Obligatory pic.:

  44. Well it was Saturday really but I'm far to slack to post anything before now. Bought from Bass Direct who were ace to deal with & arrived in a factory sealed box,so I am the first person to play it fresh, which I really like. The bass was almost perfectly setup, just needed the A string saddle raising very slightly, otherwise it is perfect Plays amazingly well, effortless in fact & makes my vintage style basses feel very agricultural. Sounds awesome too, especially with all three pickups on. It's also feather light,I've not weighed it yet but I'd be surprised if it was over 8lbs. It came in a very nice Dingwall gigbag too which is more of a soft case. Overall I'm totally loving it so far. Now for the only pic I've taken of it.
