We don't try and compete with the likes of FB and eBay but we like to think our strength is our community and safety which was only enhanced with the fee which saw any chancers take a hike. It's nice to know that most people try us first as a way of supporting the site also, even if they have eventual success elsewhere.

Just started selling on FB. Impressed so far. Trying to clear bass and photographic backlog from last year’s GAS. Items are moving much quicker than on BC, even quite exotic stuff. Who’d have thought a general punter would want a 6 string bass. Now getting responses within 12 hours.Same bass items haven’t had a tickle of interest here.

Does that mean if you put it in the fridge it gets harder to play?

Just seen this on Jon willis' facebook page.... will be interesting to see how the metering side of things is implemented... tis deffo something I've been keen to see in it for a while....

A shame, because Talkbass used to be the home of exotic basses. It is super staid these days. I play Talkbass bingo. Browse until you've heard all the big hits... "P with flats" "Sits in the mix" "Leo got it right first time" "Mud and thud" "Bass should be felt and not heard" "7.6lbs? That's an ounce too heavy for me, I'm out"

One problem i'm finding on BC at the moment is that every bass i really like seems to be from outside the UK. There seems to an awful lot of basses for sale from outside UK. I'm not brave enough to buy from outside the UK. Dave

My eBay days are done. For me, BC for substantial / specialist stuff, FB for bits and bobs. Works a treat.

While that is present I feel like there is less of it these days, Talkbass is less middle class than it used to be. As I say, it used to be a doctors and lawyers hangout and the bass porn was off the scale. As a mere regulatory professional, I'm surprised they even approved my account!

A lovely tribute from Doane Perry, which casts some light on how Neil dealt with his illness: Doane Perry 11 hrs Neil Ellwood Peart - 9/12/52 - 1/7/20 I want to thank all the people who have so kindly written, texted, posted or called regarding Neil's passing. Like so many, this has completely undone me and I haven't quite known where to start. I am working on something more substantial to be posted in the future when things have settled a little for everyone. During the last three and a half years, Neil faced this brutal, aggressive brain cancer bravely, philosophically and with his customary humor, sometimes light and occasionally dark - all very characteristic of him, even given the serious situation and the odds handed to him at the time of the diagnosis and subsequent surgery. But he fought it. By his own request for privacy, few people knew, but his understandable response to this news in no way excludes or diminishes ALL of those who also knew him, worked with him or loved and admired him from up close, or at a distance. His tenacious approach to life served him well during these last years and although he primarily kept his own counsel, he retained his dignity, compassion, understanding and his deeply inquisitive nature, which never deserted him. Remarkably, considering the severity of his condition (glioblastoma) and through the resulting aftermath, he really had no pain. This was always my first question when I saw him. “Any pain?” I asked. “No pain”, came the reply. What a blessing that was. We were all grateful for that. For every one of us who loved him, near and far, this is a loss that is difficult and impossible to summarize in a few short paragraphs. The outpouring of love, respect and appreciation from every imaginable quarter for this extraordinary, singular talent and beautiful man with a mind like no one I have ever met, is touching beyond words. To those that had to guard and hold on to this information closely for three and a half years, for obvious and protective reasons; his wife Carrie, daughter Olivia, his loving family, band, colleagues and friends, they have my undying admiration. You know who you are. Apart from his deeply gifted, genius talent and prolific output, which he brilliantly displayed through music, lyric and prose writing and that staggering storehouse of knowledge across an array of subjects in multiple fields, he remained a kind, gentle, considerate and modest soul and a consummate gentleman… as well as an extraordinary friend. If you were his friend, you knew it and he understood how to be the best friend that you could ever hope to have. I think I speak for all, known and unknown to him, to say he will be deeply missed, eternally loved, appreciated and remembered for his many invaluable contributions to music, art and the written word. That will be forever celebrated. Despite what he knew and we knew which was inevitable, I believe there is some sense of relief that this long, difficult odyssey has finally ended. Just started working through Mark from Talking Bass's slap course** I must admit to being a big fan of Mark and glad I've found an excuse to sign up to one of his courses rather than just taking advantage of his (excellent) free tuition. We've all gotta put food on the table at the end of the day - don't we? I've found that setting up works well: 1) use the bridge rather than the neck pup The bridge pup is generally going to be better at picking up the overtones and also has the advantage of being further away from where the strings are being slapped so less likely to clip your amp / overload your speakers than when using the neck pup. 2) dial the treble up on either the bass and / or amp Slap bass very much relies on higher frequency zing. Quite a lot of 'advice' seems to also suggest cutting / scooping the mids for a classic slap bass tone. I've not found that necessary to get the slap zing but I guess it provides a different tonal colour and you go with what you like. In my case, I'm holding on to the desire to continue to cut through the mix by not losing the mix but maybe a wrong headed approach? Those of you far more experienced in this arena than me (which will be just about anyone proficient at slap!) - does that tie in with what you guys are doing in terms of setting up? **the sort of pointless stuff you find time for when you join @bassfan's 2020 GAC so that you can no longer spend many productive and happy hours drooling over the latest bit of gear that's going to deliver that tiny nirvana difference to your tone that you're never going to hear wearing ear plugs when playing live and no one in the audience will notice or care about 😉

The one slight issue I have (particulalry when using mobile), is the sheer quantity for equipment for sale from outside the UK. At the risk of suggesting some sort of BCexit, how do people feel about a seperate topic for equpiment for sale outside the UK? Or am I just being stupid?

She has more singing talent than me, and that's a fact. On bass playing let's call it evens.

She may not be a songwriter, but can sing and she's an ordinary middle aged woman with Aspergers who overcame a lot more barriers than 99.98% of them!

Shame these things happen anywhere but i've had the opposite on BC where @muydeemer travelled up by train from London to pick up a bass at Glasgow. I drove into Glasgow about 50miles for me but unfortunately he was held up due to flooding at that time which was on the news. He contacted me several times with updates and fortunately i was able to wait in Glasgow, get a late lunch /early dinner with my wife until he arrived. Guy was brilliant, liked the bass handed over the cash with absolutely no issues. He jumped back on the train that was just about to leave and all done in 10mins. I've had some great deals with both BC and FB to be honest but generally i find BC deals go a bit smoother. No idea why but maybe its because most of us are all doing the same thing when it comes to GAS and we just like being treated the same way we would treat others. We are a lovely bunch of people on BC. Dave

Yes it’s difficult to have a feedback system with any value when it comes down to it - these transactions happen separately from the site and we get no detail about them and can only go on what we’re told. I feel a star rating would end up meaning the mods would constantly be roped into disputes and it’s also difficult to implement on a software level. The text based system is ok and can provide context when things didn’t go well but I agree it could be better integrated. Unfortunately I don’t think our software allows for that at this stage and coding it in ourselves would be very tricky! Loving the new job, thanks for asking. I’ll make an update on the thread. Two weeks in and I haven’t been sacked yet!! Cheers ped

Nothing has changed about the marketplace here and although that might not tally with your own experience it’s a bit of a stretch to say the marketplace isn’t what it used to be. In fact I don’t remember the last time I had to help in a dispute between members, and the statistics show more items being listed than ever before. Also we can only help with issues if they’re raised with us. Did you leave feedback for these guys who didn’t turn up?

When i was a teenage brat back in the 80s I was big into the likes of Vai, Satriani etc as I was more of a guitar than bass player back then. IMO I don't see why guitar players shouldn't be accomplished bassists. I think it's a bit strong to say the guitar playing in the vid is poor. While it's no longer my cuppa Darjeeling there's no denying these are skilled players and recognisably so. Anyway, back in the 80s, shredding had taken electric guitar playing far beyond what Hendrix, Clapton etc had been doing even if it sounds somewhat dated nowadays

To me it's III Sides to Every Story. Saw them twice at the time. Great concerts, but they never played the acoustico symphonic parts, sadly.

I use both FB and BC. The pattern seems to have been as follows. Sell on FB. Stuff I no longer want, not looking to make a profit, easy local pickup or delivery. Buy from BC. More expensive specialist stuff that I feel confident has been usually cared-for. Don't mind travelling a distance to collect or meet part-way.

Still won’t be joining facebook, no matter what.

Yeah I know what you mean. I can definitely see more new/younger/poorer bassists coming through now. I feel sorry for them having to suffer all the "use the search function" jibes from the jaded old grumpy hacks. Basschat is so much better.

Couple of oldies but goodies. First edition Hohner B2A, 1984, owned from new: Cort Space B2 - bought from a BCer about 8 years ago, original black finish was badly worn so I removed it using a heat gun & was pleasantly surprised to find a satin poly sealing coat underneath. Want to pop some different pickups in at some point. And this one's a no-brand Crack Converters special I picked up because I liked the sort of Marleaux/Laurus-y styling, and it was dirt cheap. Unfortunately quite cheaply-made too, despite appearances it's not through-neck, it took a lot of work to make it play nicely and unfortunately the tuning system is over-engineered, poorly thought out and barely fit for pupose. Looks smashin' though, but sadly no use as a wall-hanger because paradoxically, it lacks a head to hang it by. So off it went. Future headless ambitions include a Riverhead Unicorn (had GAS since the 80s when I couldn't afford one), Hohner Jack (the J/J version) Westone Super Headless (when one turns up at the car boot for £30) Status S2/S2000 (see previous entry) - and probably more realistically, a conversion of a sort-of Rickenfaker I've had kicking around for years, which has one of the ugliest & most incongruous headstocks I've seen.

Not sure about the bass playing, but I've always thought Nuno was an extremely underrated guitarist. He's up there with the best imo.

It's gone 3pm here in Anaheim and we've managed to talk to John Hall at the Rickenbacker stand, say hi to Roger Sadowsky with a promise of a chat later, spent some time with Tomm of Stonefield, talked to Sheldon Dingwall, and spotted several other familiar exhibitor faces we'll get back to when it's less busy. Watch this space!
