  1. I've been after an older Matsumoku Rickenbacker copy, or something very similar, and I've just picked up this '77 Aria complete with original case. It needs a good clean, both cosmetically and electrically, but it sounds awesome and plays really well, the actions a tad high for my taste at the mo but I'll give it set up once cleaned. The seller reckons he has the origins TRC and pickup cover but is in the middle of moving and can't find them, he said if he finds them he'll post them to me so fingers crossed.

  2. Hi - am listing my Shuker black/maple PJ 4 string with jazz profile neck. I’ve copied a lot of the information from the BCer I bought it from. The bass has a Jean Jacques Brunel Precision English ash body core with swamp ash wings and is finished in a beautiful black gloss with a bwb pickguard. It has a maple neck with a select birds eye fretboard and matching headstock veneer that is truly stunning. The neck profile was taken from a Sadowsky Will Lee jazz, so is slim and comfortable and sports hipshot light tuners.. All hardware is black and adds to the classic black and maple look. The pickups are Di Marzio and these perfectly compliment the Sadowsky pre amp with vintage tone control. She weighs in at just a tad over 9lbs on the bathroom scales and is very comfortable to play. Included is the Shuker hiscox case. I am asking £950, £895 available for collection from West Yorkshire or can meet up within a couple of hours travel time. If someone wants to arrange a courier I will pack it up very securely. Trade wise I am specifically looking for a USA Musicman Sterling

  3. So friday was NBD and my BB435 arrived finally. Man what a fine bass this is. The previous owner installed a balance poti instead of Vol/Vol/Tone, wich i like. It sees to be a kind of "stacked" balance Poti. I can't hear any loss og highs in the middle position. He installed a bit more solid string retainer too. What blows me out of the water are the new pickups. I love them. Round, fat a lots of ooomph. Ther's a fresh set of dr low rider on it, what makes it perfect. Love this Bass.

  4. Off to a good home. The well revered Epiphone Jack Casady. Includes original hard case and strung with D'Addario Chromes flatwound. This is the more sought after Korean model which puts it at about 10 years old me thinks. Those of you in the know will agree these basses are fantastic. Great clear punchy pick up not to dissimilar to a P bass. On this one I've moved the strap pin to the upper horn (using a backing block epoxied inside). This really helps with the ergonomics as well as neck dive. They are Schaller strap lock pins and I'll include the female portion of the locks as well. Case has a couple of nicks, but overall good condition. Local pick up fine, can ship no problemo as well. Paypal is preffered.

  7. I have a new model coming out in the not to distant future that I think will tick all of the boxes you mentioned. Initially as a 30.5” 4 and 32” 5. A 32 /4 would be no problem. Will feature a new pickup and will be passive as standard.

  8. Received mine on Friday. First impressions were similar to everyone else. Feels solid, well built and the carry bag is a bit of a joke. Got to use it last night. On first switch-on, the fan is a bit loud, but I've had other amps that are equally loud or louder. I practice with a Bass Trainer, so that doesn't bother me a bit. Plugged in, everything flat, including the bass and the core sound is great. It's Full, Fat and Loud. Only needed a bit of a tweak, (Bass DOWN a tad. That's a first), and we were there. Sounded great during the gig and didn't get lost in the mix during the gig. Kept pace with the guitarist turning up 4 times, (as they always do) and I didn't touch a thing. Tons in reserve as the bass volume was about half and the same for Gain and Volume. It is a seriously loud piece of kit. Like @Phil Starr I actually prefer the tone to my aged MarkBass SA450 so won't be spending the dosh to get it repaired as I seem to have found a replacement. The Tuner is a nice touch and it appears to be accurate when compared to my TC Polytune. All in all a happy chappy.

  9. Isn't this a bit like having someone who's shorter than you get into the driving seat of your car and telling you it's undrivable cos they can't quite reach the pedals?

  10. So this bass has an interesting story! I bought of it Captain Mike Brooks back in 2005 with no laquer, controls or frets and had Phillipe Dubriuelle (who has a workshop in Denmark Street and has owrked on everybody's guitars and built for everybody) work his magic on it with(back then) a generic 3 band EQ and refretted it and refinished it in this amazing greenburst all over! I used it extensively but not in anger as you can see for years! Fast forward to 2014 and I sold it to a friend of mine who really wanted it... Regretted it, bought it back in 2016 and put an Aguilar OBP-3 in it. I had it refretted by Chris who's the master luthier down at Crimson Guitars as they owed me a favour and have used it probably 5 times since! purely because a LOT of the work I'm doing is on a 5 string and I have a LOT of basses not being used, so seeing as I have to pay for a wedding now, an few of them are going up for sale! I love this bass but it needs to be played more! You know the specs of these! Upgrades: Aguilar OBP-3 preamp Refinish Refret It's an amazing bass as I keep saying and does main me to see gone but it deserves to be played and loved more than I can give! Has a gig bag! WOuld rather collection as you HAVE to play this bass to believe it! BigJim

  11. I've seen Samsara a few times. We are very lucky here in brighton to have a few really great reggae bands on the circuit. Dub organiser are also well worth a look if you are local. They put on quality live dub nights in komedia. Also definitely check out the resonators, also from Brighton. I recently made enquiries into setting up another one so watch this space....

  12. So the 2020 abstinence worked well for me then, not 2 weeks in and another new bass. But in my defence I am going to be selling 4 basses and 1 guitar, so I’m not feeling too guilty, Anyway, said bass, although I have a Squier VM77 that is great I wanted a US Jazz and saw this advertised on the bay so took a punt. Neck is slim as with Jazz basses, tall frets apparently though I don’t notice them being any different if I’m honest. Added a Hipshot Extender and A-string thingy, plus a black pickguard. I did quite like the minty green stock one but OCD dictates black to match my other instruments. Plays like a dream, sounds great with good difference between the two pickups. The slim neck means I’m playing with a much lighter fretting hand. Was strung with Ernie Ball Super Slinkies - that’s now two basses I’ve bought with these on and have to say I like them. So I now have the classic three, Precision, Jazz & Stingray, all in black/black/maple, plus one of those skinny stringed things (a Fender Tele 72 Deluxe).

  24. No criticism on the size I’m 5’5” and gig’d one no qualms. They sound so good, you can hear why they have become a Nashville standard session bass.

  25. The bassist and keyboard player look like they could be characters from 'The Big Bang Theory'. It reminds me of when I played at a mathematics conference at St Andrews University, a few years ago. There was a lot of sandal and sock action on the dance floor that night.

  28. I agree with @ead, having just become the owner of an ACG I can safely say @skelf makes the best basses I’ve ever played. If you have the funds go for it, the man can build pretty much anything.

  29. Meeting up for the first time with three other muso's through JoinMyBand exactly a year ago, we plugged in, tuned up, and the first half-a-dozen songs we played all sounded great, everyone had done their homework and had actually worked on the songs we agreed to run through before turning up. Best first meeting I've ever been involved in, and we are still together now. 🙂

  32. I bought a bass out of the money made from selling my old ('88 to '92ish) heavy metal t-shirts a few years ago. I frequently used to pick up a t-shirt a gigs and others were bought in HMV, Virgin or the likes. Some were in a condition which was, as a mate commented, "not fit to wash my car". All sold. An Iron Maiden Powerslave shirt went for €125, Acid Reign Moshkinstein €60, a manky Slayer Reign in Blood shirt with the sleeves cut off, around €50, it was crazy. Funnily enough, the one really rare one (an Ozzy t-shirt from the Moscow Music Peace Festival given to me by a TV cameraman who lived across the road and happened to work at the event) only went for €25. I made over €700 out of them all. Different times.

  33. Made the smallest of tweaks on the truss rod and was able to lower the action (nut is already cut for 45-105 gauge strings). At the 17th fret: E is 2.38mm, A is is 2.19, D is 1.98 and G is 1.59 By adopting a slightly lighter touch, I am able to get a lower action with minimal fret buzz. I will leave it like this for a while and see if I prefer the lower action. Much easier to play already has long has I don't use my usual gorilla technique!

  38. Being in a band that develops a great sound usually takes time and commitment. I started playing with a friend of mine who’d never played live before. He is, by all accounts, a bit mad. In the beginning it sounded terrible, but now he’s pretty good. It’s taken over a year to get there. I play jazz with a group of beginners, too. Musically they’re pretty terrible but they love it (and turn up every week on time - that means a lot). I used to want to be cool in bands, now I just want to enjoy time with great people. If you like these guys and want to work to make it better, then good for you. If you’re looking for the perfect band, then it’s probably better to start one than try to find one. If you decide to quit, do it amicably. When you start pointing out the faults of other people they’ll usually find a few of your own, so tread carefully is my advice.

  40. Johnny Marr’s a huge fan too. Also, when Hendrix was once asked what it was like being the best guitarist in the world, he supposedly said “I don’t know, ask Rory Gallagher”. Met Rory and the band once at a motorway service station with my family. I was about 18 I guess. My mum said to me “who is Rory Gallagher? There’s a guy over there with a Rory Gallagher t shirt on”. Turned round and there was the band. Bit of a jaw drop moment as he was one of the first people I got into when thinking of learning guitar (prior to ending up on bass). I went over and asked if I could possibly have his autograph. He was lovely, no airs at all. Went to see him that night in Manchester. Still have the autograph; thought Id lost it years ago who but it happily turned up last year. Shame we haven’t still got Rory. Legend.

  41. Bare with me while I toot another couple of lines of jama. Snifffffffffff Right then, where were we? As you've probably gathered compression is a widely misunderstood and divisive subject. Compression is best understood in the context of a band mix, if you're not currently playing with other musicians you'll get a similar experience playing along to some music. But before you start playing around with the various compression models on the B3 (which I think are a great place to start) I'd strongly recommend doing some homework on the subject, get an understanding of what the various controls do and how they affect your dynamics. I can't stress this enough, as I think ignorance is why so many people don't 'get' compression. That's not meant to be a condescending put down by the way, it's just I've seen many erroneous arguments against the subject that, to me, appear to be based on misunderstanding. Anyway, the various comp models on the B3; Each one has a few different parameters rather than the full compliment of controls you'll see on a studio unit. But this is a good thing when starting out as it keeps things simple. With the understanding you've picked up from your homework start having a play and try to get something that works for you. Each model offers a different type of compression, neither one is necessarily better than the other, they're just different. The OptComp models the squishy characteristics of an optical compressor. The DComp does the less than subtle DynaComp flattening of the signal. Far from subtle but useful as an obvious effect. The MComp is one of my favourites, fat and controlled. I like this a lot. Dual Comp is aimed at slappers. Your reputation precedes you. Separate control over high and low bands with an adjustable crossover. Too much of a void in the mids for my taste. 160 Comp does that big, fat dbx style compression. A little dark sounding perhaps but the weight it adds to the rest of the signal makes me do a little wee. My favourite model, I gigged with this for a couple of years on my MS-60B. Have a play and see what works for you.

  43. Brain cancer. Fantastic drummer and all round individualistic good guy. The family pain he suffered was terrible. May he rest in peace. Edit Wasn’t sure about including this but we lost our father in law to a Brain tumour Glioblastoma GBM4 in 2013. 7 months from a tingle in his fingers to passing away at home. My wife needed all the help she could get to help him have his wish of “being at home” and one charity did so much for this to happen was http://www.brainstrust.org.uk Their work is incredible and we still fundraiser for them 7 years on.
